Superstar Mahesh Babu is set to portray Lord Sriram for the first time in his illustrious career, marking his debut in a divine role on screen. After months of speculation, it is now official that Mahesh will play the revered deity in Varanasi, the highly anticipated film directed by SS Rajamouli.

At the announcement event, Mahesh reflected on his father’s long-standing desire to see him play a god on screen—a request he consistently declined throughout his career. Mahesh revealed that despite his father’s insistence, he never felt ready for such a portrayal. However, Rajamouli’s vision for Varanasi and his conviction ultimately persuaded him to take on the role.

Rajamouli shared insights into the creative process, admitting that he initially had reservations about visualizing Mahesh as Lord Sriram. But the moment the team conducted the test shoot, he was stunned by the transformation. According to the director, Mahesh appears both majestic and fierce in the avatar, and the 30-minute sequence centered on Lord Sriram will be one of the film’s standout highlights. The episode has already been shot and is said to have come out exceptionally well.

Though earlier rumors linked Mahesh to Prashanth Varma’s Jai Hanuman in a similar role, those reports were speculative. Varanasi now marks his official debut as Lord Sriram. The film is positioned as a mythological action-adventure drama infused with time-travel elements, promising a grand cinematic experience when it releases in Summer 2027.
