Kuala Lumpur, Feb 2 (IANS) – In a significant step toward enhancing national security and streamlining border control operations, Malaysia has established the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS). Officially launched on Sunday, AKPS consolidates various border enforcement responsibilities under one unified agency, marking a major reform in the country’s approach to managing international entry points.

The new agency is designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of border control, integrating resources and expertise from multiple government agencies, including Immigration and Customs. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof emphasized that AKPS is part of Malaysia’s commitment to maintaining a robust and seamless border management framework in an era of globalization.

“The formation of AKPS is a response to the increasing need for a more integrated and cohesive border security system. It reflects our efforts to enhance service delivery and strengthen Malaysia’s position as a competitive trading nation,” said Fadillah during the agency’s launch ceremony.

The AKPS is tasked with overseeing all aspects of border control, from immigration checks to customs inspections, across Malaysia’s air, sea, and land borders. This includes a network of 114 border checkpoints nationwide, with an initial focus on 22 high-traffic locations such as the Johor Causeway and Second Link, which connect Malaysia with neighboring Singapore.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail highlighted the agency’s role in safeguarding national security, pointing out that efficient border control is essential in preventing criminal activities, including the trafficking of illegal weapons and other illicit goods. By centralizing control, the agency aims to mitigate these risks while facilitating smoother trade and travel between Malaysia and its international partners.

In addition to security, AKPS will focus on improving service delivery, enhancing operational coordination, and ensuring the safety of Malaysia’s borders. The agency’s formation is seen as a strategic move to reinforce the country’s commitment to maintaining a secure and efficient border management system in the face of evolving global challenges.

The launch of AKPS was attended by key government officials, including Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Hashim, underlining the broad political and administrative support for the initiative.

The move is expected to contribute significantly to Malaysia’s long-term goals of enhancing national security, boosting trade efficiency, and maintaining its reputation as a stable and well-managed entry point for both travelers and goods.
