Darwin, Australia – A 23-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot in what authorities believe to be a targeted attack in the northern suburb of Coconut Grove, Darwin, on Monday night. The incident occurred just after 7:00 p.m. local time, when police responded to reports of gunfire.

Ambulance crews arrived at the scene and treated the victim, who had sustained significant pellet injuries to both legs from a shotgun. The man was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he was placed in critical condition and awaited surgery on Tuesday morning.

Northern Territory (NT) Police later arrested three individuals in connection with the shooting, including two men, aged 19 and 22, and a 22-year-old woman. They were detained early on Tuesday in Katherine, approximately 270 kilometers southeast of Darwin. Police believe the perpetrators were known to the victim.

According to Duty Superintendent Tanya Mace, the attack appears to have been targeted, with no risk posed to the general public during the incident. “We believe this was a targeted attack, and at no time were any members of the public at risk,” Mace stated during a press briefing.

Witnesses reported seeing the attackers exit a vehicle before shooting the victim. Investigators are processing the crime scene, including the vehicle in which the suspects were traveling when apprehended.

This incident follows a series of similar violent events across Australia. In December 2024, a shooting in Melbourne resulted in one fatality and two injuries, highlighting a concerning trend of gun violence in the country.

Authorities continue to investigate the Coconut Grove shooting, and forensics teams are working to gather evidence for further analysis.
