Ajay–Atul: Underrated Gems for Period & Mythological Films

Indian cinema is currently witnessing a strong wave of period films enriched with mythological and fantasy elements. From Bollywood to South Indian industries, filmmakers are increasingly turning to historical and epic narratives, with audiences showing a clear preference for grand visual storytelling on the big screen.
In such films, music and background score play a crucial role in elevating the cinematic experience, adding emotional depth and scale to the storytelling. Among contemporary composers, the duo Ajay–Atul has earned a stellar reputation for their powerful and immersive scores in historical cinema.
Ajay Ashok Gogavale and Atul Ashok Gogavale, widely celebrated for their success in Marathi cinema, have also established a strong presence in Bollywood with several hit songs and impactful background scores. Their work in films such as Tumbbad, Thugs of Hindostan, Panipat, Tanhaji, and Adipurush has been widely appreciated for its grandeur and emotional resonance, regardless of the films’ box office outcomes.
Recently, for Ritesh Deshmukh’s upcoming Marathi historical film Raja Shivaji, the duo has reportedly delivered another powerful soundtrack. The anthem from the film has already received an enthusiastic response, with listeners praising its stirring orchestration and goosebump-inducing impact.
Despite their proven versatility, Ajay–Atul remain underutilized in Telugu cinema. Although they made their Telugu debut with Ravi Teja’s Shock and are expected to return with Vijay Deverakonda’s Rana Bali, many believe the duo deserve far more opportunities in the South. Their expertise in crafting larger-than-life musical experiences makes them ideal candidates for mythological and fantasy films, where both songs and background scores demand emotional intensity and epic scale.
