‘You May Call Me Pappu, I Don’t Hate You’

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi launched his sharpest ever attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the floor of the parliament on multiple issues including the Rafale deal, saying he is not a “chowkidaar (guard)” but a “bhagidaar” (participant) and “he cannot look me in the eye”.

His scathing speech was punctuated by screaming protests from the BJP members and the Speaker had to adjourn the house for several minutes. As the debate started on the no-confidence motion in the government, the numbers in parliament dropped rapidly, bringing the government’s goal of getting two-third votes within striking distance.Naveen Patnaik’s BJD walked out, and in a last-minute twist, ally Shiv Sena stayed away.

“You may have hatred for me in your heart, you may think I am ‘Pappu’ for you” says Rahul amid huge cheer. He says he will convert the BJP men to Congress members. After finishing this, he goes and hugs PM Narendra Modi in an unprecedented gesture. The PM shakes hand with Rahul. The whole House breaks into laughter when Rahul Gandhi says a lot of the BJP MPs came and told him during the brief adjournment that he spoke very well.

“You may think that I have anger for the PM. I am speaking from the heart. The PM, BJP, and RSS have taught me the meaning of the Congress, being Indian, Lord Shiva, and being a Hindu.”
