New Zealand’s Melie Kerr has etched her name in history by becoming the first Kiwi to receive the prestigious Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, earning the title of ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year for her exceptional performances in 2024. At just 24 years old, Kerr outshone the competition, surpassing renowned players like Laura Wolvaardt, Chamari Athapaththu, and Annabel Sutherland to claim this coveted honour in women’s cricket.
Not only is Kerr the first New Zealander to win the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, but she is also the first Kiwi to be recognised as ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year in any category. Throughout the year, Kerr’s all-round performances have been nothing short of spectacular. As a world-class leg-spinner, she became one of the most dangerous strike bowlers, regularly proving to be the White Ferns’ go-to match-winner with the ball. Her exceptional fielding also lifted New Zealand’s game, contributing significantly in the field.
With the bat, Kerr played a pivotal role for New Zealand, often anchoring the innings when the top order faltered or playing expansive knocks to capitalise on strong starts. The Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, first introduced in 2017, has previously been awarded to just three players—Australia’s Ellyse Perry, India’s Smriti Mandhana, and England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt—each having won the award twice. Kerr’s victory marks a significant milestone in women’s cricket and adds to her growing legacy.
