Meta is preparing to launch a new generation of AI models developed by its Superintelligence Labs (MSL) team, led by Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, according to an Axios report. The company is also expected to take a more flexible approach by open-sourcing versions of these models, allowing developers and companies to access and build on them.
However, Meta may initially keep certain components of the models private to reduce potential safety risks before a full public release. This marks a more balanced strategy compared to earlier reports suggesting a possible shift away from open-source development.
The new AI push comes as Meta looks to regain momentum after Llama 4 underperformed in the market, while competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic continue to advance with major upcoming releases. Meta’s focus remains on creating widely adopted consumer-facing AI tools, in contrast to rivals that are increasingly targeting enterprise and government use cases.
To strengthen its AI ambitions, Meta has also made significant investments in infrastructure, including large-scale purchases of NVIDIA H100 chips, which are essential for training advanced AI systems. This expanded computing power is expected to help Meta build larger and more capable models.
Meanwhile, competition in the AI space is intensifying. Anthropic’s Claude platform and OpenAI’s Codex upgrades are pushing deeper into enterprise workflows, automation, and advanced developer tools, highlighting the growing divide between consumer-focused and enterprise-focused AI strategies.
