Pushpa 2: The Rule Breaks 23-Year-Old Box Office Record at Sandhya 70mm Theatre
In a remarkable achievement, Pushpa 2: The Rule has surpassed a 23-year-old box office record set by the film Kushi at the iconic Sandhya 70mm Theatre in Hyderabad. In just four weeks, Pushpa 2 has grossed over ₹1.59 crore, eclipsing the previous record of ₹1.53 crore set by Kushi in 2001. Despite Pushpa 2’s monumental success, Kushi continues to hold a special place in cinematic history for several reasons.
During the early 2000s, ticket prices at the Sandhya Theatre ranged from ₹5 to ₹50 depending on the section, from the front rows to the balcony. With no extra charges for premieres or official permission from authorities, screenings were much less formalized than today. Additionally, black market ticket sales were prevalent, though they did not contribute to the official box office collection, which lacked the accuracy of modern tracking methods.
In stark contrast, Pushpa 2 has benefitted from significantly higher ticket prices, with special benefit shows priced at ₹900 and regular first-class tickets sold for ₹250 for several weeks. This pricing difference highlights the substantial inflation in ticket costs over the past two decades, amplifying the achievement of breaking Kushi’s record.
The Sandhya 70mm Theatre, a well-established stronghold for the Mega family, has long been considered a prestigious venue in Hyderabad. The success of Pushpa 2 at this historic location is not only a testament to the film’s popularity but also a moment of pride for both the film’s creators and the film industry as a whole.
