Bollywood has given us countless superstars whose blockbusters shaped entire generations. Every aspiring actor dreams of being celebrated for hits—but one legendary star stands out for a very different record.
He rose to fame alongside icons like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor. He built a cult following abroad, delivered one of Russia’s biggest box-office sensations, and yet is known for an unusual distinction: the most flops in Indian cinema.
That star is Mithun Chakraborty.
In a career spanning nearly five decades, Mithun has acted in over 350 films across Hindi, Bengali, Odia, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Punjabi. Despite his versatility and massive fan base, reports suggest he has delivered around 180 flops and 47 disasters—the highest for any Indian actor.
Yet, he remains a beloved superstar. His iconic film Disco Dancer became a historic blockbuster worldwide, especially in Russia, where it turned him into a phenomenon.
Interestingly, Mithun once admitted he hasn’t even watched a large chunk of his own filmography.
He said:
“I have done more than 370 films, and I haven’t seen about 200 of them to date. Many of those films completed Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee runs, and some ran for two years. But in every film, I worked with full honesty and dedication.”
Despite the setbacks, Mithun’s dedication, mass appeal, and sheer longevity continue to make him one of Indian cinema’s most iconic stars.
