Modi Hits Back at Trump’s Tariffs, Stands Firm for Farmers

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again escalated economic pressure on India by imposing an additional 25% tariff, taking the total tariff burden on Indian exports to 50%, primarily citing India’s continued oil trade with Russia. This move has sparked widespread debate among economists and policymakers, given its far-reaching impact on the Indian economy.

Responding to the situation for the first time, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the issue publicly, stating that India will not bow down to external pressure. Emphasizing national interest above all, Modi made it clear that the country remains committed to its strategic partnerships and will stand firm on its principles.

“India will never compromise on the interests of our farmers, fishermen, and dairy producers. Their welfare is our top priority. I understand I may have to pay a political price for this stance, but I am prepared for it,” Modi said.

His remarks come amid ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, which have raised concerns about potential market openings—particularly in the dairy sector. A recent report by the State Bank of India warns that liberalizing dairy imports could lead to annual losses of over ₹1.03 lakh crore for Indian dairy farmers, due to falling prices and rising competition.

Despite the economic strain the U.S. tariff hikes may cause, Modi appears determined to prioritize India’s agricultural backbone over external demands—signaling a strong and uncompromising stand in the face of mounting global pressure.
