In the film industry, the shelf life of heroines is often short, while heroes continue to shine on the big screen even as they age. Many senior star heroes keep surprising audiences by announcing back-to-back films despite being decades into their careers. Among them are a few legends who have completed an extraordinary 50 years in cinema — a rare milestone by any standard.
Recently, Tollywood star Balakrishna celebrated completing five decades in the industry. Now, another stalwart has joined this elite list — none other than Collection King Mohan Babu.
Mohan Babu began his journey as a villain and later transitioned into a successful lead actor, earning the titles Collection King and Dialogue King for his powerful screen presence and impeccable delivery. His immense contribution to Indian cinema has been recognised by the Government of India with the prestigious Padma Shri award.
To honour Mohan Babu’s remarkable 50-year cinematic journey, his elder son Manchu Vishnu has officially announced a grand tribute event — one that is expected to go down in film history. Titled “MB50 – A Pearl White Tribute,” the celebration is scheduled for November 22, and preparations for this milestone event are already in full swing. The family is leaving no stone unturned to make it a memorable historic moment that reflects Mohan Babu’s service to Indian cinema.
Mohan Babu’s life story is as inspiring as his career. Born as Bhaktavatsala Naidu in Modugulapalem near Tirupati to Manchu Narayanaswamy Naidu and Manchu Lakshmamma, he began his professional life as a Physical Education instructor at YMCA College. His path changed when he met legendary filmmaker Dasari Narayana Rao, who later became the turning point of his career.
His major breakthrough came with the 1975 film Swargam Narakam, directed by Dasari Narayana Rao, where his performance as a villain won him recognition. He later appeared as a lead actor in several successful films such as Khaidi, Kalidasu, Gruhapravesam, Ketugadu, Allari Mogudu, and Assembly Rowdy, impressing audiences with his versatility. He frequently collaborated with icons like Rajinikanth and Sivaji Ganesan, delivering memorable performances.
In recent years, Mohan Babu has also excelled in character roles, continuing to captivate audiences with his mature acting. Beyond films, he has established and developed the Sree Vidyanikethan Educational Institutions, transforming them into universities and providing free education to many underprivileged children — a gesture that speaks volumes about his generosity and character.
As Mohan Babu completes a glorious 50 years in cinema, the industry and fans alike celebrate the journey of a man who carved his own legacy through talent, discipline, and an unyielding passion for the art of filmmaking.
