Nagarjuna’s Ratchagan Inspires a New Generation of Filmmakers

Sometimes, a film may flop at the box office, yet over time, it gains a cult following and influences future filmmakers. Nagarjuna’s Ratchagan (known as Rakshakudu in Telugu) seems to have had such an impact, particularly on Tamil directors and actors. What was considered a disaster at the time has gone on to inspire several creative choices in later films.

During the release of Coolie, director Lokesh Kanagaraj revealed that he was a fan of Nagarjuna’s “funk” hairstyle in Ratchagan, which inspired Simon’s look in his movie. Similarly, actor-director Pradeep Ranganathan admitted that he admired Nagarjuna’s hairstyle as a child and even sported a similar cut in school.

Recently, Pradeep visited the sets of Bigg Boss Telugu Season 9, hosted by Nagarjuna, to promote his film Dude. Speaking to Nag, he explained the story behind his funky hairstyle: “When I was in school, I was inspired by Nag sir’s hairstyle in Ratchagan and got the same funk haircut. My mom didn’t allow me inside the house initially. I promised her that I would cut it after showing it to a few friends and girls in school. Now, she can’t stop me, so I’m growing my hair like Nagarjuna sir.”

Nagarjuna chuckled and said it seems his Ratchagan film “spoiled a lot of youth in Tamil Nadu” back then. Even he might not have imagined that one of his biggest box-office failures would set a trend for Tamil filmmakers and still be talked about nearly three decades later.

As for Dude, the film is set for a worldwide simultaneous release in Tamil and Telugu on October 17. Directed by Keerthiswaran, it features Mamitha Baiju as the female lead and promises a fresh, engaging entertainer for audiences.
