Nagarjuna’s Shiva became a trendsetter in Indian cinema and continues to inspire filmmakers decades after its release. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma in his debut, the film is now set for a grand re-release on November 14th.
RGV recalled that music posed one of the biggest challenges during production. “With Dolby Atmos, every sound can now be experienced in its full dimension. Shiva has always been a film dedicated solely to Nagarjuna. Back then, I even wondered how I could convince him to perform the cycle stunt, and how he agreed to do it,” he shared.
On his inspirations, Varma said, “I’ve always been a huge fan of Bruce Lee. Initially, I planned a small film titled Rathri. Around that time, Venkat suggested I write a story for Nagarjuna. I remember watching Return of the Dragon for the 50th time. I simply replaced the restaurant backdrop with a college setting for Shiva. I came up with the one-line idea in just 20 minutes, combining all my college experiences into it.”
When asked about collaborating with Nagarjuna again, RGV stated, “I decided that if I were to approach Nagarjuna for another film, I would do so only after delivering a hit.”
Nagarjuna expressed gratitude to RGV, saying, “A few days ago, when I watched Shiva again, it felt like watching a completely new film — truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Two days after my father watched it, he took me for a drive and said the film was a huge hit while comments poured in from all sides.”
On whether his sons Naga Chaitanya or Akhil might remake Shiva, Nagarjuna laughed, “Chaitanya and Akhil don’t have the guts to remake Shiva.”
