As the Telugu Desam Party-led coalition government under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu nears its one-year anniversary—just 12 days away—speculation is mounting about a possible reshuffle and expansion of the state cabinet.
According to media reports, discussions are underway for a potential cabinet expansion in the second or third week of June. One anticipated development is the induction of Nagababu, the newly elected Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) and Jana Sena Party leader, whose cabinet entry has been pending for some time. However, with the current cabinet accommodating only one additional berth, Nagababu’s inclusion would likely preclude any further appointments.
Complicating matters, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is reportedly seeking a second cabinet berth in Andhra Pradesh, in addition to the one held by Y. Satya Kumar Yadav. Should the BJP’s demand be met, a cabinet reshuffle may become necessary, potentially involving the removal of one or more sitting ministers.
Sources reveal that during a recent one-year governance review, Chief Minister Naidu expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of certain ministers. It is expected that “progress cards” assessing each minister’s performance will be presented at the upcoming cabinet meeting scheduled for June 4.
Reports suggest that three ministers are currently under scrutiny — one from Uttarandhra, another from the Godavari region who has been involved in controversies, and a third from Rayalaseema. Despite this, some political leaders advise caution, warning that dropping ministers just one year into the government’s term could send an unintended negative signal.
“If any ministers are to be replaced, care must be taken to maintain social and regional balance,” sources noted, highlighting the delicate nature of any potential reshuffle.
As the government approaches this milestone, all eyes will be on the decisions made in the coming weeks, which could shape the political landscape in Andhra Pradesh for the remainder of the term.
