Nani and Vijay Deverakonda Experiment with Regional Identities in Telugu Cinema

Share

Nani from Andhra Pradesh has firmly established himself as one of the most beloved stars of Telugu cinema, while Vijay Deverakonda, hailing from Telangana, enjoys a massive fan following, particularly among the youth. Interestingly, both actors are now stepping out of their comfort zones by embracing regional identities different from their own.

Nani made a remarkable shift with Dasara, delivering a career-defining performance as a coal mine worker from Telangana, complete with the region’s distinct dialect. He continues this trajectory in his upcoming film The Paradise, portraying Jadalu, a gritty character from the Secunderabad region. For the role, he sports braids, body tattoos, and again adopts a Telangana accent. One of his tattoos even boldly reflects his rebellious persona, further enhancing the character’s authenticity.

Vijay Deverakonda, on the other hand, is moving in the opposite direction. In Rowdy Janardhana, he plays a coastal Andhra character and speaks in the Uttarandhra slang, marking a departure from his earlier roles. The recently released title glimpse highlights this transformation. Adding to the intrigue, Vijay will also portray a Rayalaseema man in another upcoming film by Shyam Singha Roy fame director Rahul Sankrityan, adopting the Seema dialect for the role.

With both stars boldly experimenting with regional slangs and rooted characters, Telugu cinema is witnessing a refreshing trend that adds authenticity, depth, and versatility to mainstream storytelling.
