RGV Slams Bollywood, Says Pushpa 2’s Magic Is Unmatchable
Ram Gopal Varma, known for his unfiltered opinions, has once again sparked controversy with his latest remarks. Despite his last directorial Vyuham failing at the box office and his cameo in Kalki 2898 AD going unnoticed, the filmmaker remains in the headlines. This time, he has taken a direct jab at Bollywood, claiming that no filmmaker in the industry can match the raw mass appeal of Pushpa 2: The Rule.
In a recent interview, RGV revealed a shocking statement made by a prominent Bollywood producer about Pushpa: The Rise. “When he saw Pushpa 1, he told someone I know, ‘North audiences will puke on this guy’s face,’” Varma stated, exposing the industry’s deep-rooted biases. He pointed out that many in Bollywood prefer stars with “six-pack abs and polished looks” over rugged, massy characters like Allu Arjun’s Pushpa Raj. Now, with Pushpa 2 set to become an even bigger sensation, RGV quipped, “That producer must be having nightmares after seeing the film’s impact.”
Expanding on his critique, Varma argued that Bollywood filmmakers lack the grounded sensibilities that South Indian directors naturally possess. “Most South directors can’t even speak English fluently, but they are deeply connected to the audience. They don’t try to sound intellectual—they just understand the masses,” he remarked. According to him, Bollywood remains trapped in an elite bubble, disconnected from the raw emotions and larger-than-life storytelling that define true commercial cinema.
With Pushpa 2 poised to break new records and redefine mass entertainment, RGV’s words serve as a stark reminder of the shifting power dynamics in Indian cinema. As audiences embrace content beyond language barriers, Bollywood’s ability to adapt will determine its place in the evolving industry.
