The “cycle” has long been recognized as the electoral symbol of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), carrying significant cultural and political resonance since the era of the party’s founder, the late Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR). This emblem holds deep meaning for TDP supporters, symbolizing the party’s legacy and connection to grassroots politics.
However, the symbol has frequently been a target of hostility from rival political factions, particularly supporters of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YCP). Such animosity was notably visible during the 2019 elections when several YCP cadres were seen dismantling and damaging bicycles to mock the TDP.
Regrettably, a similar incident recurred recently during the wedding ceremony of Jogi Ramesh’s son in Ibrahimpatnam. Reports indicate that a group of local YCP activists dragged and damaged a cycle along the road, seemingly to provoke TDP supporters. What sparked particular condemnation was the allegation that the damaged bicycle belonged to a local child, prompting public disappointment over the unnecessary and aggressive act.
In response to the incident, IT Minister Nara Lokesh expressed strong displeasure. Demonstrating solidarity with the affected family, he directed local TDP workers to provide a new bicycle to the child. Additionally, Lokesh called for appropriate police action to ensure accountability and prevent such acts of political intolerance in the future.
This incident has reignited discussions about the importance of maintaining political decorum and respecting symbols that represent community identities. Citizens and leaders alike have urged all political groups to exercise restraint and foster a culture of mutual respect, especially during sensitive occasions.
