Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, the wife of former Nepalese Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, tragically died on Tuesday after protesters trapped her in their home and set it on fire, according to media reports. The incident occurred in the Dallu area of Kathmandu, and although Ms. Chitrakar was rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries during treatment, family sources confirmed.
The unrest in Nepal escalated following a short-lived government ban on social media platforms such as Facebook, X, and YouTube, which sparked widespread protests led predominantly by young people, dubbed the Gen Z protest movement. Demonstrations quickly expanded into broader criticism of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s administration and allegations of corruption among the country’s political elite.
Amid growing violence, including the torching of MPs’ homes and even the parliament building, PM Oli announced his resignation on Tuesday. Reports also emerged of Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel being chased through the streets and physically attacked by angry protesters, highlighting the intensity of the unrest.
The protests intensified despite the government lifting the social media ban on Monday night, fueled by outrage over police actions that killed 19 protesters and frustration over the perceived privileges enjoyed by children of political leaders, commonly referred to as “Nepo Kids”.
As violence continued, Kathmandu airport was shut, and army helicopters were deployed to escort government officials to safety. The situation prompted India to advise its citizens to defer travel to Nepal. Airlines including Air India, IndiGo, and Nepal Airlines cancelled flights from Delhi to Kathmandu amid the ongoing chaos.
The unrest in Nepal underscores rising discontent among the youth over government mismanagement, corruption, and socio-economic inequalities, signaling a critical moment in the nation’s political landscape.
