As part of the initiative, the government is targeting IT professionals and highly skilled workers from Southeast Asia, with the goal of positioning New Zealand as a welcoming hub for global talent.
According to Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis, the new visa policies will help draw in wealthy and talented individuals, contributing to the broader goal of strengthening New Zealand’s economy. The updated rules permit travelers to extend their stays in the country, with remote work from overseas allowed. However, there are tax implications for those who work for more than 90 days, as noted by Willis.
These changes apply to all visitor visas, including those for tourists, partners, and guardians on long-term visas, and align New Zealand with other countries like Spain and Thailand that have implemented similar remote work visa policies. The move is expected to further enhance New Zealand’s appeal as a destination for remote workers and digital nomads.
Additionally, New Zealand has made key adjustments to its immigration policies to facilitate easier access for both employers and workers. Among the changes, the government has removed the median pay requirement for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) and Specific Purpose Work Visa (SPWV), and reduced the minimum work experience requirement for migrants from three years to two years. Furthermore, new visa options have been introduced, including a three-year multi-entry visa for experienced seasonal workers and a seven-month single-entry visa for lower-skilled workers. These updates complement existing temporary and seasonal worker programs, enhancing the flexibility and attractiveness of New Zealand’s immigration system.
