No Takers For Kodandaram?

It looks like Telangana Jana Samithi led by former Telangana Joint Action Committee chairman Prof M Kodandaram has dropped the gun much before the battle has begun.Even as Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s statement hinting at early elections in the state and announcement that he would declare the list of candidates for the assembly elections in September has generated a lot of heat and dust in the state politics, there is absolutely no euphoria in the Kodandaram camp.

On Monday, Kodandaram announced that his party would contest alone in the assembly elections. It apparently indicates that there were no takers for him in fighting the elections together. The Congress party initially sent feelers to Kodandaram for an alliance, but the latter overestimated his strength and network and rejected the offer. Now, with the elections fast approaching, the Telangana Jana Samithi has not been able to find enough number of candidates to contest the elections.

Even those who have come forward do not have the financial strength and capacity to fight the elections. There would be no surprise if they withdraw from the contest at the eleventh hour under pressure from the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi. That is precisely why Kodandaram is opposing early elections.

“There is no reason why the early elections have to be held. We shall oppose the same,” he said.May be he thought he would get some time to bargain with other parties for good number of seats if the elections are held as per schedule in April or May.Now, he cannot announce the list in advance like the other parties, nor can he get into bargaining with the Congress or other parties!
