Nothing has started the public rollout of Nothing OS 4.0, its Android 16–based software update designed to deliver a cleaner interface, improved system coherence, and the first wave of AI-driven creative features through the new Essential Apps framework. Built on the foundations of OS 3.0, the update stays true to Nothing’s minimalist design language while elevating overall fluidity, intelligence, and user experience.
One of the standout additions is Live Updates via the Glyph Interface. Real-time delivery, ride, or timer information can now be displayed simultaneously on the screen and the Glyph lights, enabling at-a-glance progress tracking without opening an app. Any application supporting Android 16’s Live Updates is automatically compatible with Glyph Progress, greatly expanding utility for users.
Nothing OS 4.0 also debuts an enhanced Extra Dark Mode, improving contrast and reducing power consumption across the system. The feature now extends to first-party apps such as Essential Space and Launcher, with wider support under development.
System animations have been refined to feel more responsive and immersive. Touch interactions, swipes, and gestures gain added depth, while app transitions now feature subtle background scaling for a more cohesive sense of movement. Volume adjustments include soft haptic cues at maximum and minimum levels.
The update expands widget functionality with new 1×1 and 2×1 layouts for Weather, Pedometer, and Screen Time. A redesigned Pop-up View enables two floating apps to run simultaneously, with easy gesture-based switching. A new Hidden Icons feature offers a cleaner home screen by allowing users to conceal selected apps within the App Drawer.
For Phone (3) users, exclusive enhancements include upgraded Flip to Glyph controls, improved Pocket Mode, new interactive Glyph Toys such as Hourglass and Lunar Cycle, and a Glyph Mirror Selfie feature that saves both original and mirrored versions.
Nothing is also introducing a major expansion of Nothing Playground. Using the new AI-powered Widget Builder, users can describe an idea and instantly generate a custom Essential App. These creations are organised within the newly introduced Widget Drawer, which consolidates all built and collected tools into a unified, streamlined space.
Nothing OS 4.0 is rolling out first to Phone (3), with wider availability for other Nothing and CMF devices expected soon.
