Gender Equality, Addressing Challenges Faced by Both Boys and Girls

For years, discussions about gender inequality have primarily focused on the challenges and disparities faced by girls and women. However, recent studies and observations suggest that boys, too, are encountering significant challenges within the “gender war,” highlighting the complexity and multifaceted nature of gender equality.

Bollywood actress Sanya Malhotra, a strong advocate for gender equality and feminism, is once again sparking conversations about gender roles. Clips from her film Mrs have ignited discussions among women, particularly around the stark realities of arranged marriages. Malhotra is also well known for her role in Dangal, a biographical drama that challenges gender stereotypes and societal expectations in India’s patriarchal society. The film follows a father who trains his daughters to become world-class wrestlers, challenging traditional gender roles and offering a new perspective on women’s capabilities.

Traditional gender norms often dictate that boys must be tough, unemotional, and dominant. These expectations can suppress their emotions, leading to mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and anger. In conflict zones, such norms are even more damaging, as they contribute to the recruitment of boys as child soldiers. It’s clear that gender equality efforts must also include boys. Gender-based violence impacts boys too, often in the form of physical bullying or corporal punishment, particularly among those who are, or are perceived to be, LGBTQ. The fight isn’t about boys versus girls, but rather a unified effort among all children to combat gender inequality and work towards a world where everyone has access to fair, inclusive education and the opportunity to grow into equal, productive citizens.
