Vijay Victory Revives Debate on Film Stars in Politics

Everyone once believed that the era of film stars successfully entering politics ended with N. T. Rama Rao, especially after later attempts by Chiranjeevi in 2009 and Pawan Kalyan in 2019 did not achieve the expected political success.

This is why many were initially skeptical when Vijay entered politics independently in Tamil Nadu. However, his sensational electoral victory has once again revived discussions about whether cinema stars can still translate their popularity into political power.

Following Vijay’s success, there is renewed excitement among fans of other star heroes, with many speculating about their favourite actors potentially becoming future chief ministers. However, beyond such fan discussions, political success for an actor requires certain strong foundations.

One of the most important factors is sustained dominance in cinema for at least five years prior to entering politics. The actor should be so popular that there is a clear gap between them and the next level of competition in terms of stardom and influence. Only then can such popularity effectively translate into electoral strength.

In many cases, strong fan bases tend to actively participate in elections, especially when the star enjoys widespread acceptance across different sections of the audience. However, in Telugu states, there have also been instances where sections of audiences boycotted films due to caste and political affiliations, as seen with some of Pawan Kalyan’s films and even Akhanda 2 related controversies around Nandamuri Balakrishna.

In contrast, Vijay’s strength in Tamil Nadu came from his consistent and undisputed dominance at the box office, along with his ability to connect with both mass and family audiences. Unlike many stars chasing only action-heavy pan-India trends, he continued focusing on family-oriented and emotional storytelling, which helped him maintain strong appeal among women and family viewers as well.

Ultimately, while Vijay’s victory has reignited hopes among fans of other actors, the path from cinema to politics is not straightforward. It requires long-term dominance, broad-based acceptance, and favourable timing. Above all, a significant amount of luck also plays a crucial role in turning cinematic popularity into political success.
