OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT Projects to Free Users

OpenAI has announced that its Projects feature, previously limited to paying subscribers, is now available to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free plan.
Projects enable users to organise conversations around specific topics, apply custom instructions to guide AI responses, and control which files and information the model can reference. Beyond serving as folders for chats, these added capabilities make Projects particularly valuable for users who depend on ChatGPT for structured workflows.

As part of the rollout, OpenAI has also increased file upload limits. Free users can now attach up to five files per project, while Plus subscribers have a limit of 25, and Pro/Business/Enterprise subscribers can upload up to 40. Users will also be able to customise each project with unique colours and icons for streamlined navigation.

Key highlights from OpenAI’s announcement include:

Larger file upload support (5 for Free, 25 for Plus, 40 for Pro/Business/Enterprise)

Enhanced personalisation with colour and icon selection

Project-specific memory controls for tailored context management

The expansion continues OpenAI’s recent strategy of extending premium features to a wider audience. Previously subscriber-only tools such as Deep Research, ChatGPT Voice, and even access to GPT-5 were gradually introduced to free users, albeit with certain usage limitations.

Currently, Projects are available on the web and the ChatGPT Android app, with rollout to iOS devices expected in the coming days.
