OYO Bans Unmarried Couples: New Check-In Policy Sparks Debate

OYO, a leading travel booking platform, has announced a new check-in policy aimed at rebranding itself as a trusted choice for families, students, businesses, and solo travelers. The revised policy, which emphasizes safe and responsible hospitality, will initially roll out in Meerut starting from the new year.

As per the updated guidelines, OYO’s partner hotels in Meerut will no longer accommodate unmarried couples. It will now be mandatory for all couples to provide valid proof of their relationship at the time of check-in, even for online bookings. Additionally, OYO has granted partner hotels the discretion to decide which couples they admit, aligning with local cultural and social norms.

This policy shift comes in response to repeated requests from civil society groups in Meerut, urging OYO to address community concerns. The directive has been issued for immediate implementation in the city, with plans to evaluate its effectiveness and expand it to other cities based on feedback.

Pawas Sharma, Regional Head of OYO North India, commented on the change, stating, “OYO is committed to fostering safe and responsible hospitality services. While we respect individual freedom, we also recognize our responsibility to align with local laws and collaborate with civil society groups in the regions we operate.”

The initiative aims to build customer trust, encourage longer stays, and enhance loyalty by creating a more secure and family-friendly environment across OYO’s network of partner hotels.
