Maaya Movie Review

Acclaimed director Neelakanta has been running through lean phase in his career in recent times. He chose to direct a thriller to put an end to his bad run. Did he succeed in doing so?

What is it about?

Meghana (Avantika) has Extra Sensory Percetion (ESP), which means she can foresee the future. She sees a vision of her lover Siddharth (Harshavardhan) killing his fiancee and Meghana’s friend Pooja (Sushma). Meghana tries hard to save her friend from Siddharth. But there is an unforeseen surprise in store for her.

Performances:

Avantika:

Avantika got a dream role on debut. She got an author backed role to essay in her very first film and that is a big ask for a newcomer. She did her best to match up to it. But she could only do half justice to her character. We can’t blame her entirely for it. Director should have trained up her for this role before going for the shoot.

Harshavardhan Rane:

Harshavardhan has good looks and decent screen presence. He usually plays second fiddle to heroine and this film is no different. However he got some scope to perform in the second half of this film and he did alright.

Others:

Sushma is okay in the final scene. Nandini Rai is fine in her brief role. Nagababu, Venu and Jhansi played the supporting roles.

Technicalities:

Direction:

Neelakanta has always tried to do different films from the routine masala fare. His efforts to do a different film could be seen. But the half baked script lets him down. He failed as a director as the film hardly engages you until the final scene.

Others:

Cinematography is decent for a low budget film. Dark lighting schemes helped to keep the mood intact. Music is weak. None of the songs are impressive. Editing is very bad in the first hour. It is slightly better in the second half.

Thumbs Up:

  • Concept

Thumbs Down:

  • Weak Narration

Analysis:

The concept is not entirely new to our audience. If you are exposed to world cinema, there are many movies that have dealt with this ESP concept. Despite having an interesting premise, director messes it up with poor narration. There are many logical errors and loose ends in the film.

First half of the film is absolutely boring. Director should have used the ESP concept to good effect to keep the audience glued to the screen. Instead he focused on poor romantic track that is a big yawn. There is a nice twist at the interval point and the film gets better in second half. It could have been way better, but Neelakanta didn’t execute his idea to perfection.

In spite of being illogical the climax sequence is done well. That is the only saving grace of this thriller that has no punch. Audience who watch Hollywood thrillers will laugh at this attempt that is dealt with age old narrative techniques. Thriller movies must be engaging the audience and keep them guessing all the way. Only such thrillers could leave an impact at the box office as well. Maaya fails on many levels and ends up as a below average thriller with very few positives. Let alone Hollywood films, we have seen better thrillers in Telugu and Maaya is a very substandard film compared to them. If the makers of this film had ESP, probably they wouldn’t have made this movie. Who would want to risk their money on a failed attempt? To sum it up, watch Maaya only if you have nothing better to do.

Verdict: Climax Clicks Well!

Siddharth gets second classic after Bommarillu

Share

untitled

No matter how many films an actor does in their career they will always be remembered for the classics they star in. and having such classics in an actor’s career is a rare occurrence as not every film an actor does gets that status. Siddharth is among the lucky actors to be part of one such film as main hero, it was Bommarillu and it surely doesn’t require any more explanation.

However Siddharth has hit a jackpot by being part of a classic movie again playing the main hero part. We are talking about his Tamil film Jigarthanda which would be releasing soon in Telugu as Chikkadu Dorakadu. After months of getting postponed the film has finally released yesterday in Tamil worldwide. It has opened with stunning reviews with many hailing it as a classic in gangster movie genre. The film is directed by Karthik Subbaraj who made stunning debut with Pizza. With Jigarthanda he has established his credentials as top of the line director in the new generation.

All we have reported above is a critical evaluation though and it remains to be seen if this critical success can turn into commercial success as well and if the film can be the biggest success in Siddharth’s career overtaking that of Bommarillu.

Salman attacked by bombers in Pakistan?

Don’t go by the literal meaning. It is not Salman directly, but Salman’s film is attacked by bombers in Pakistan on 31st July. Though Pakistan and India are two different Nations, people share a lot in common. Besides commoness in food and culture, we share the passion for Bollywood movies. All Bollywood top heroes have huge fan base in Pakistan. Whether it is the Khan trio (Salman, Shahrukh & Aamir) or Govinda & Ranbir Kapoor’s films, there is no religion bar even in Pakistan regarding films. Almost all the big films have a release in Pakistan too and make business more than any Pakistan made film.

As Eid gift, Salman Khan’s ‘Kick’ has been released all over the world. There was huge rush in Pakistan theatres as it was holidays for them in the festival season. Audiences thronged to theatres to get maximum kick to enjoy. But in a theatre at Jinnah road in Karachi, two unidentified persons came on motorcycle, threw hand granades and escaped the scene. Two persons who came to watch the movie were seriously injured and rushed to a hospital immediately. Salman Khan’s films were never before targetted in Pakistan. But this new development is astonishing his fans all over the world. Is it because Salman chanted ‘Namo’ in the recent general elections?

Run Raja Run provides respite to Sarwanand

run raja

Finally after what seems like ages Sarwanand has got respite box office wise. The actor has been plagued with box office bombs for a long time and as a result of this it was even reported at certain point that he may even quit films all together. The last big success for the actor was Gamyam, which was way back in 2008. Unfortunately for him even that wasn’t a solo venture.

So basically the actor with Run Raja Run is looking at first big solo success. Directed by Sujeeth, Run Raja Run had a low key release but with the good word of mouth and critic’s verdict, the film has shown good pick up in all major A centers. According to the trade the first day collections clearly suggest good pick up and the film, they say, will be another profitable film for all involved. What this also means is that UV Creations, the banner which debuted with Mirchi would be having another success to their name.

Adavi Kachina Vennela Movie Review

Experiment gone wrong

Adavi Kachina Vennela is the case of an experimental film going wrong. The film leaves you feeling of missing something and desires something more. Unless you were told that the director is a newcomer, you’d not find on your own. Debutante Akki Viswanadh Reddy did a fair job. His writing is fresh and he tries to explore new dimensions. But the problem with the film is writer-director Viswanadh squanders all his talent. He has put all his eggs in one basket- Adavi Kachina Vennela. Had he shaped this well, the film would have meet a different fate.

Set in the milieu of Rayalaseema, where all the characters speak chaste Seema jargon, Adavi Kachina Vennela is all about a guy (Arvind Krishna) who has extraordinary talent to detect metals under the ground and he is in the quest of an ancient superpower which could prevent the death. He digs the lands he comes across for it and leaves family to the last. His wife (Pooja Ramachandran) and his father leaves the town. Surprisingly, these things have no affect on Arvind who is focused on his goal to find the power. In between, he meets another lady Vennela (Meenakshi Dixit), a professional shooter. Will Arvind able to trace the super power? What are the hurdles ahead? Could he overcome?

Viswanadh recruits good cast who fits the bill aptly. The one best thing in the film is that even sidekicks in the film did their part well. And the only exception is protagonist Arvind krishna who misses the bull’s eye. One is unfathomable whether it’s deliberate attempt by makers to act Arvind so or so the actor can’t emote beyond well. Yet the other cast carried off the film. Kudos to Viswanadh for his casting and bringing acting talent out of them. The passion of the filmmaker is visibly seen on screen as he hasn’t compromised at any point. The music is soothing and the background score elevates the scenes. Sirivennela Sitaramasatri’s lyrics come in handy and worked well. There are few comedy scenes involving ’30-years’ Prudhviraj and others which tickle your funny bone.

Like any other filmmaker, Viswanadh fails to meet the challenges that come while unfolding the story. The latter half of the film falls flat. The CGI works could have been better. Especially, the climax portion is a mere disappointment. How could Arvind lose Sudharma which he has found after years of searching? On whole, Adavi Kachina Vennela is a decent attempt considering that director is newcomer. Yet it could have been made well.

NTR’s Powerful Rendition is Topper

Music director Thaman is having this habit of delivering one super hit song in a movie album he composes. Rest of the songs generally sound average, and we don’t the reason behind it. Even for his latest ‘Rabhasa’, he repeated the same magic.

Songs sung by heroes are labeled as some publicity stunts but here in ‘Rabhasa’ the one delivered by Young Tiger stands tall. Peppy number that goes by the lyric ‘Rakshasi Rakshasi’ has NTR’s powerful rendition brushed upon it. His voice is not just magical and enticing, but it dominated other professional singers who have sung rest of the songs. This song is already sitting on the top of chartbusters and will continue its presence for months. Has NTR taken any special instructions to sing this one?

‘Rabhasa’ album has five songs, one happens to be hero introduction song, two mass-masala songs, one teasing song and the other one is a sentiment-laced number. The teasing song is the one sung by NTR which is making fans go merry.

Quashing all the rumors about her remuneration, seductress Samantha has shown her humorous side the other day. Also she revealed that her remuneration needs to be reviewed now. Check this story.

“There is no truth in rumors that I’ve taken a villa from Bellamkonda Suresh for my spicy skin show in Alludu Seenu. I’ve upped oomph factor as critics wrote me off that I can’t do glamorous roles. Also this film is my gratitude towards the producer,” said Samantha, clearing air over the news that she collected a villa and huge sops. She reiterated that Bellamkonda stood like a pole beside her when she met with mysterious illness during shooting of Jabardasth. On the other hand, Samantha quipped that her remuneration hasn’t shot up though she had blockbusters in a row.

“My manager is not hiking my price, despite the fact that I’ve hits in a row. I don’t know why,” she laughs. “Maybe even heroines like me should also demand for rights of certain areas. You (media) should tell me which area I should ask for,” she added, in a satirical tone.
