Tamil Nadu CM Stalin Credits ₹5,000 to Women Ahead of Elections

Share

With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections likely to be held in around two months, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has made a significant move that has captured public attention. Earlier today, he announced that his government is crediting ₹5,000 into the bank accounts of 1.31 crore women across the state.

This initiative is essentially an advance payment under a program that has been crediting ₹1,000 per month to women since the formation of the DMK government. Given the approaching election season, the government reportedly accelerated the payment to avoid any scrutiny from the Election Commission regarding cash transfers. The ₹5,000 includes advance payments for February, March, and April, along with an additional ₹2,000 as a summer bonus.

Supporters of the DMK see this move as a strategic masterstroke that could positively influence voter sentiment, boosting confidence ahead of the polls. Some political analysts also suggest that the program could sway public opinion in the party’s favour.

Opposition parties, however, have criticised the move, alleging that the lump-sum cash transfer is an attempt to buy votes and calling it unconstitutional, reflecting the political tension as Tamil Nadu gears up for what promises to be a closely contested election.

Donald Trump to Visit China in April for Meeting with Xi Jinping

Share

US President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that he will travel to China in April for a high-level meeting with President Xi Jinping, marking a new phase of diplomatic engagement between Washington and Beijing.

“I will be visiting President Xi Jinping in April. He will be coming to the US later in the year, and I look forward to it,” Trump said, highlighting the positive state of US-China relations. “Our relationship with China is very good right now,” he added.

The announcement comes amid growing global attention on US-China relations, which continue to reflect a complex mix of economic competition and strategic cooperation. While further details of the April visit have not yet been disclosed, the trip represents a significant diplomatic milestone.

Trump’s confirmation follows a recent 90-minute phone call with Xi on February 4, which the US President said focused solely on trade issues, without touching on other geopolitical concerns such as Iran or Ukraine. “During the conversation, President Xi graciously invited the First Lady and me to visit China, and I reciprocated. As Presidents of two Great Nations, this is something that we both look forward to doing,” Trump shared on Truth Social after the call.

OpenAI Launches GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark for Real-Time AI Coding

Share

On February 12, OpenAI launched GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, an ultra-fast artificial intelligence (AI) model designed for real-time software development, marking a major shift toward instant, interactive coding workflows as competition in the AI tools market heats up. The model, a smaller version of GPT-5.3-Codex, is being released as a research preview to ChatGPT Pro users and select partners. OpenAI said it is optimized for near-instant responses when deployed on specialized low-latency hardware, delivering more than 1,000 tokens per second. The launch also represents the first milestone in OpenAI’s partnership with chipmaker Cerebras, announced in January.

Unlike larger AI models built for extended autonomous tasks, Codex-Spark is tuned for rapid iteration, enabling engineers to edit code, refine logic, and respond immediately to user input. According to OpenAI, “Codex-Spark is our first model designed specifically for working with Codex in real-time—making targeted edits, reshaping logic, or refining interfaces and seeing results immediately.” The system supports both quick interactions and more complex projects, allowing engineers to intervene, redirect, or interrupt output as it is generated. By default, the model keeps its working style lightweight, performing minimal edits and skipping automated tests unless requested.

Codex-Spark features a 128,000-token context window and is currently text-only. While smaller than frontier models, it performs strongly on software engineering benchmarks such as SWE-Bench Pro and Terminal-Bench 2.0, completing tasks in a fraction of the time. This release reflects a broader trend toward specialized AI models that prioritize responsiveness over maximum reasoning depth, particularly for developer tools where low latency directly impacts productivity. OpenAI has also redesigned its infrastructure to reduce delays across the entire request pipeline, including persistent WebSocket connections and optimizations to its Responses API, which cut overhead per client-server roundtrip by 80% and halved the time-to-first-token.

Codex-Spark runs on Cerebras’ Wafer Scale Engine 3, a purpose-built AI accelerator optimized for high-speed inference. This hardware complements traditional GPU infrastructure by focusing on ultra-low latency. “What excites us most about GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark is partnering with OpenAI and the developer community to discover what fast inference makes possible—new interaction patterns, new use cases, and a fundamentally different model experience,” said Sean Lie, co-founder and CTO of Cerebras. OpenAI emphasized that while GPUs remain central to training and broad deployment, specialized chips can accelerate workflows where response time is critical, offering a glimpse of a new era in interactive AI-driven coding.

Spotify Engineers Rely on AI, Stop Writing Code

Share

Spotify’s most experienced software engineers haven’t written a single line of code in months, as artificial intelligence (AI) fundamentally reshapes how the streaming giant develops its products.

Speaking during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, co-CEO Gustav Söderström revealed that AI is now deeply integrated into Spotify’s engineering workflow, generating and deploying software with minimal human coding. “Our most experienced developers have not written a single line of code since December,” he said.

Rather than manually programming, engineers now supervise an internal AI system called “Honk,” which combines generative AI—including Anthropic Claude Code—with real-time development tools. This setup allows engineers to direct, review, and refine AI-generated code instead of producing it themselves. For instance, an engineer can use Slack on their morning commute to instruct Claude to fix a bug or add a new feature to the iOS app.

Spotify says this AI-driven approach has accelerated development and deployment. In 2025 alone, the company shipped over 50 app features and updates, including AI-powered tools like Prompted Playlists, Page Match for syncing physical books with audiobooks, and “About This Song,” which offers contextual storytelling.

Söderström emphasized that Spotify’s vast user data is a key competitive advantage, enabling the company to train and refine AI models at a scale unmatched by competitors. “This is a dataset that no one else is really building. It improves every time we retrain our models,” he said.

While the changes are significant, Söderström described them as an early stage of a broader transformation, signaling deeper AI integration across Spotify’s software engineering in the future.

Bimbisara 2: Kalyan Ram’s Sequel on Hold?

Share

Tollywood is abuzz with speculation about the fate of Nandamuri Kalyan Ram’s blockbuster Bimbisara sequel. The first film, directed by Vassistha, was a massive hit and marked a major comeback for Kalyan Ram. Naturally, fans were excited when Bimbisara 2 was announced.

But over three and a half years later, there’s still no word on pre-production, casting, or even an official update from the team. This prolonged silence has sparked rumors that the sequel might be on hold—or worse, just a hype announcement.

Adding to the uncertainty, Kalyan Ram, after facing setbacks with films like Devil and Arjun S/O Jayanthi, is reportedly planning a new collaboration with director Srikanth, who worked as a writer on Pushpa. If this new project kicks off soon, Bimbisara 2 could be delayed even further.

For now, fans are left wondering whether the sequel will ever take off or if the makers are waiting for the perfect time. It seems Kalyan Ram may need another strong hit before taking on a big-budget follow-up.

Couple Friendly: A Crucial Test for UV Creations

Share

UV Creations, one of the prominent production houses in Telugu cinema, is looking at 2026 as a crucial year for revival. The banner, which once delivered successful films like Mirchi, Run Raja Run, and Bhale Bhale Magadivoy, has been going through a challenging phase in recent years.

Their big-ticket ventures such as Radhe Shyam, Adipurush, and Ghaati failed to meet expectations at the box office, putting considerable financial pressure on the banner. With consecutive setbacks, the need for a solid success has become more urgent than ever.

Now, the spotlight shifts to Couple Friendly, a relatively small, content-driven film starring Santosh Shoban in the lead role. Unlike their recent large-scale productions, this film is positioned as a youthful entertainer packed with relatable moments. While it may not generate massive revenues, even a moderate success could restore some confidence and positive momentum for the production house.

However, the bigger test lies ahead. Sharwanand’s Biker is gearing up for an April release, while Chiranjeevi’s much-awaited Vishwambhara is expected to hit screens during the summer or post-summer season. Both projects are mounted on substantial budgets and need strong box office performance to stabilize the banner’s financial standing.

At the same time, Couple Friendly is equally crucial for Santosh Shoban, whose recent films failed to perform well commercially. For him, this project represents an important opportunity to bounce back and re-establish his position.

As February 14 approaches, the big question remains: Will Couple Friendly deliver the much-needed positive start for UV Creations? For the banner and its lead actor alike, this film appears to be a decisive turning point.

Funky Review: A Flat & Aimless Comedy

Share

Director Anudeep tasted massive success with Jathi Ratnalu, but his next outing Prince failed to impress at the box office. Now, he returns with Funky, a fun entertainer featuring Vishwaksen, hoping to regain his comic touch. Does he succeed this time? Let’s find out.

Story

Komal (Vishwaksen) is an aspiring filmmaker whose dream project lands in trouble after he exceeds the planned budget. The frustrated producer (VK Naresh) halts the shoot midway. Determined to prove his capability, Komal impresses the producer’s daughter Chitra (Kayadu Lohar) and boldly promises to complete the remaining portion of the film within a tight budget of ₹1 crore.

Performances

Vishwaksen plays his role in a restrained manner, avoiding unnecessary mass elevations or forced action sequences. His sincerity is evident, but there is a noticeable mismatch between his screen persona and Anudeep’s quirky writing style, which weakens the overall impact.

Kayadu Lohar looks stunning on screen and adds glamour value. However, her character lacks depth and meaningful development, restricting her role to limited emotional impact.

Sampath Raj begins on a promising note but fades as the narrative progresses. VK Naresh is decent in his role, while Eeswari Rao delivers a neat and convincing performance as the mother. Muralidhar Goud is underutilized. Dil Raju’s cameo works to some extent, but the other special appearances fail to leave a mark.

Technical Aspects

Technically, the film is mounted fairly well. The cinematography and production design align with the tone of the film. However, the editing feels uneven and patchy, affecting the narrative flow. The music is largely forgettable and fails to elevate the emotional or comedic moments.

Highlights

• A few witty one-liners
• Kayadu Lohar’s screen presence

Drawbacks

• Weak and hollow writing
• Poor editing
• Lack of scene-to-scene continuity
• Aimless and stretched narrative

Analysis

The title Funky suggests quirkiness and fun, but much like its meaning, the film ultimately feels hollow. Anudeep, who struck gold with his sharp and refreshing humor in Jathi Ratnalu, struggles once again to recreate that magic. In fact, this outing feels even more diluted than Prince.

The film opens on a mildly promising note, with a few punchlines landing effectively. However, the entire narrative continues in the same rhythm without building strong conflict or meaningful progression. While audiences may stay patient for the initial 15–20 minutes, the repetitive style soon becomes tiresome. Over a two-plus-hour runtime, the lack of engaging story arcs or memorable comedy blocks leads to visible fatigue.

At its core, the story is wafer-thin — a struggling director trying to impress a producer’s daughter while finishing his film. This simple premise is stretched using random gags and repetitive jokes. The humor works occasionally but rarely feels organic or impactful.

The interval sequence featuring an abrupt car blast appears forced, as though inserted merely to inject artificial drama rather than evolving naturally from the narrative. It reflects a lack of clarity in storytelling.

The film also seems confused about its identity. It oscillates between being a satire on filmmaking trends, a love story, and a collection of Jabardasth-style punchlines stitched together. Unlike Jathi Ratnalu, which benefited greatly from the impeccable comic timing of its cast, here the punchlines lack freshness and effective execution.

Overall, Funky begins with slight promise but quickly turns into a repetitive and hollow comedy that overstays its welcome. It becomes boring midway and ends on an even flatter note. From storyline to screenplay to dialogues, the film lacks purpose and cohesion, ultimately leaving the audience wondering what exactly the film aimed to convey.

Italy Emerges as Top Study Destination for Indian Students

Share

Italy continues to strengthen its position as one of the most attractive study-abroad destinations, offering a unique blend of academic excellence, cultural heritage, and student-friendly living. In recent years, the country has seen a notable rise in interest from Indian students, drawn by its globally recognised universities, affordable tuition fees, and vibrant lifestyle.

As highlighted by Mayank Maheshwari, Co-Founder and COO of University Living, Italy stands out for combining history, cultural richness, and strong academic foundations. The country is home to some of the world’s oldest and most prestigious institutions, including the University of Bologna, established in 1088. Italy also gave birth to the Bologna Process, which set benchmarks for higher education quality and degree recognition across Europe—benefiting Indian students seeking global acceptance of their qualifications.

Today, Italian universities offer a broad spectrum of programs in art, architecture, engineering, business, science, and design. More than 600 courses are now taught in English, making Italy increasingly accessible to international students. According to University Living’s European Student Landscape report, Italy has nearly 2.2 million higher education students, including over 100,000 international students. India is among the top contributors, with more than 6,100 Indian students currently enrolled.

Several Italian universities consistently rank high globally. Institutions such as Politecnico di Milano are renowned for excellence in engineering, architecture, and design. Sapienza University of Rome is recognised for its strong academic reputation and diverse disciplines, while the University of Padua is widely respected for research in medicine, science, and humanities. Politecnico di Torino is another leading choice for engineering and technical studies. Other notable institutions, including the University of Milan, the University of Pisa, and the University of Naples Federico II, also attract students across multiple disciplines.

Italy has also introduced updated visa policies to better manage and support international student mobility. Beginning January 2025, international students will need to attend appointments at Italian consulates and provide biometric data, including fingerprints, as part of the visa process. While this may slightly increase application costs, Italy continues to allow international graduates to remain in the country for up to 12 months after completing their studies for academic or professional training opportunities.

Living expenses in Italy vary by city. Major hubs like Rome and Milan are more expensive, with monthly accommodation costs typically ranging from €700 to €1,200, and overall student expenses averaging around €1,050 per month. In contrast, cities such as Pisa, Padua, and Naples offer more affordable options, with total monthly living costs between €600 and €900.

Students can choose from various accommodation options, including homestays, on-campus housing, private rentals, and Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA). While university housing is generally affordable, availability can be limited in major cities. Private rentals offer greater independence but may be costly, whereas PBSAs are popular for their modern amenities and all-inclusive pricing, though demand remains high.

Beyond education, Italy is actively working to attract global talent and innovation. Recent reforms aim to streamline visa processes for students, researchers, and entrepreneurs, particularly start-up founders and those involved in research and innovation. These measures reinforce Italy’s ambition to remain competitive among European destinations and strengthen its appeal as a hub for academic excellence and global talent.

EU Unveils First-Ever Comprehensive Visa Strategy

Share

The European Commission has unveiled its first-ever long-term EU Visa Strategy, aimed at modernising visa policies, strengthening security, and enhancing Europe’s global competitiveness. The move comes at a time of rising global mobility, geopolitical tensions, and regional instability, prompting the EU to adopt a more structured and future-ready approach to managing travel and migration.

Security forms the foundation of the new strategy. The Commission plans to introduce a revised framework in 2026 to reassess visa exemptions granted to partner countries. A stronger Visa Suspension Mechanism will be implemented to prevent misuse of visa-free travel. The EU also intends to apply targeted visa restrictions for countries that fail to cooperate on migration and return policies, along with harmonised sanctions to tackle travel document fraud more effectively.

At the same time, the strategy focuses on boosting economic growth and simplifying travel processes. From late 2026, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will automate pre-departure checks for visa-free travellers, enhancing both efficiency and security. The EU also plans to fully digitalise visa procedures, allowing applicants to complete the entire process online. Business travel will be facilitated through verified company lists for faster visa approvals, and trusted travellers may benefit from longer-validity multiple-entry visas.

To further modernise border management, EU IT systems will become interoperable by 2028, enabling authorities to access multiple databases through a single search. This integration will improve information-sharing, reduce fraud risks, and ensure smoother travel experiences for legitimate visitors. The strategy also includes plans to integrate Artificial Intelligence tools into visa systems to strengthen efficiency and risk assessment capabilities.

In addition, the Commission has issued recommendations to attract highly skilled professionals, researchers, students, and start-up founders. The focus is on simplifying and accelerating long-stay visa procedures, digitising applications, reducing documentation requirements, and enabling smoother transitions from study or research to employment or entrepreneurship within the EU.

Key next steps include the rollout of ETIAS in 2026, full digitalisation of visa procedures, a review of multiple-entry visa policies, targeted restrictive measures for countries undermining EU security, the development of a common list of accepted third-country travel documents, and a comprehensive study on the role of external service providers in visa processing. Overall, the new visa strategy represents a major shift toward a more secure, efficient, and innovation-driven travel and migration framework for the European Union.
