AI Acceleration Warning: Future Already Here, Says OthersideAI CEO
That’s the stark warning from Matt Shumer, co-founder and CEO of OthersideAI, the company behind the AI autocomplete tool HyperWrite. In a widely shared post titled “Something Big Is Happening”, Shumer likened the current AI moment to early February 2020, when most people dismissed warnings about COVID-19. “I think we’re in the ‘this seems overblown’ phase of something much, much bigger than Covid,” he wrote.
Shumer emphasizes that even industry insiders underestimated how quickly AI would shift from incremental improvements to exponential leaps. “For years, AI had been improving steadily. Then in 2025, new techniques for building these models unlocked a much faster pace of progress. And then it got even faster. And then faster again.”
A turning point, he says, came on February 5, 2026, with the release of flagship models like GPT-5.3 Codex from OpenAI and Opus 4.6 from Anthropic. “I am no longer needed for the actual technical work of my job,” Shumer explained. “I describe what I want built, in plain English, and it just… appears. Not a rough draft I need to fix. The finished thing.” He claims he now delegates complex development tasks to AI systems that execute, test, and refine outputs independently. “I tell the AI what I want, walk away for four hours, and come back to find the work done. Done well, done better than I would have done it myself, with no corrections needed.”

Shumer highlighted that GPT-5.3-Codex has been instrumental in its own development, helping debug training processes, manage deployments, and evaluate results. “One of the main things that makes AI better is intelligence applied to AI development. For years, global travel discussions have focused on “passport strength.” But for Indian travellers, the more practical question is not where they can go on paper — it’s where they can realistically plan, book and travel to without running into unnecessary hurdles.
A new 2026 Travel Access Report by visa processing platform Atlys shifts the focus from diplomatic mobility to real-world accessibility. Instead of relying solely on passport rankings, the report evaluates 50 international destinations based on how easy they are for Indian passport holders to access. It factors in visa processes, flight connectivity, affordability and actual travel demand.
This approach contrasts with the Henley Passport Index, where the Indian passport currently ranks 80th globally, offering access to 55 destinations visa-free, visa-on-arrival or via ETA — an improvement of five places since January 2025. While that index measures government-level agreements, the Atlys report attempts to capture the lived experience of travellers.
The access lens matters at a time when India’s outbound travel is expanding rapidly. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, 14.65 million passports were issued in 2024. Government data also recorded 28.10 million international departures in 2023 and 29.14 million departures through 8 December 2024. However, rising numbers do not necessarily mean seamless travel. Many travellers still face procedural delays, complex documentation requirements and high costs that go beyond passport rankings.
Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys, said the gap between aspiration and access is visible in travel data. “Indian travellers often choose between the destination they dream about and the destination they can actually access. We see destinations with high search interest that don’t convert into visa applications because friction discourages travellers midway. The Travel Access Report aims to highlight those barriers upfront.”
The ranking of 50 destinations is based on four weighted pillars: Popularity (35%), which considers search trends and booking volumes; Connectivity (25%), including direct flights and convenience; Visa ease (25%), covering approval rates and process complexity; and Affordability (15%), assessing cost of stay. The analysis combines visa processing insights, airline schedules, cost-per-day data and booking demand patterns.
Asian destinations dominate the top of the 2026 ranking. According to Atlys data, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates take the top three spots, followed by Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Maldives, Oman and Mauritius. Strong air connectivity, relatively simpler entry requirements and lower travel costs give South and Southeast Asian countries a clear edge.
In contrast, European and North American destinations such as France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States remain highly aspirational but rank lower in practical accessibility. Visa complexity, longer processing timelines and higher overall trip costs reduce their access scores. Canada ranks at the bottom of the list at 50th, signalling that despite strong interest among Indian travellers, entry barriers have significantly impacted its practical accessibility.
The report also identifies leaders across different travel styles. For budget-friendly travel, Nepal, Laos, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam stand out. Impulse getaways are led by Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the UAE and Vietnam. In the luxury segment, Maldives, Switzerland, Fiji, France and Italy top the list. Thailand, the UAE, Japan, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka are among the most travelled destinations by women, while Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Laos and Japan are rated best for solo travel.
Thailand, notably, appears across multiple categories — overall access, budget-friendly, women-friendly and solo-friendly — making it one of the most balanced and accessible international destinations for Indian tourists in 2026.
Seattle to Pay $29 Million in Jaahnavi Kandula Death Case
More than two years after a tragic crash that sparked international outrage, authorities in Seattle have agreed to pay 29 million USD (approximately Rs 262 crore) to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Jaahnavi Kandula, a 23-year-old Indian graduate student who was fatally struck by a speeding police vehicle in January 2023.
The settlement resolves a 110 million USD lawsuit filed in 2024 against the City of Seattle and former police officer Kevin Dave, who was dismissed from service last year. Around 20 million USD of the total payout will reportedly be covered by the city’s insurance.
Announcing the agreement, attorney Erika Evans described Kandula’s death as “heartbreaking” and expressed hope that the settlement would provide some degree of closure to the grieving family. “Jaahnavi Kandula’s life mattered to her family, her friends and to our community,” Evans said in a statement.
Kandula was pursuing a master’s degree in information systems at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus when the incident occurred on January 23, 2023. She was crossing the street when Officer Kevin Dave, responding to a high-priority overdose call, struck her with his patrol vehicle. Investigations revealed that Dave was driving at speeds up to 74 mph in a 25 mph zone. Although his emergency lights were activated and he was intermittently using the siren, dashcam footage showed Kandula attempting to cross moments before impact. She was reportedly thrown more than 100 feet due to the force of the collision.
In February 2024, prosecutors declined to pursue felony charges against Dave, citing insufficient evidence to establish criminal wrongdoing beyond a reasonable doubt. He was later cited for second-degree negligent driving and fined 5,000 USD before being terminated from the police department.
The case drew further controversy after a bodycam recording surfaced of another officer, Daniel Auderer, who was heard making insensitive remarks about Kandula’s death, including suggesting her life had “limited value” and that the city should “just write a cheque.” The comments triggered widespread condemnation in both the United States and India, prompting India to call for a thorough investigation. Auderer was subsequently fired.

Lawmakers Urge Exemption for Health Care from $100,000 H-1B Fee

However, it allows the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary to grant exemptions to specific sectors if deemed in the national interest and not harmful to US security or welfare.
Lawmakers urged DHS to create a health care exemption, arguing that the sector is already under severe strain. Citing data from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), they noted that nearly 87 million Americans live in federally designated shortage areas lacking adequate medical professionals. They also highlighted projections showing that physician demand could outpace supply by up to 86,000 over the next decade. Additionally, clinical laboratory science programs are reportedly producing less than half the professionals required to meet national needs.
The letter emphasized that domestic hiring alone cannot address these gaps. Restricting access to international health care workers, lawmakers warned, would further weaken hospitals and research institutions—particularly those serving rural and underserved communities. Many international professionals contribute significantly not only to patient care but also to biomedical research.
“Health care organizations must be able to recruit staff in the most cost-effective manner so they can direct resources toward patient care,” the lawmakers wrote.
