UIDAI extends free Aadhaar update scheme till Dec 14

New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Saturday extended its free-of-cost Aadhaar update scheme till December 14.

The date was earlier set to expire on September 14, following which uploading documents on myAadhaar portal and making changes in profile required a fee.

“UIDAI extends free online document upload facility till 14th December 2024,” UIDAI said in a post on social media platform X.

The move is set to “benefit millions of Aadhaar number holders”, it added.

The UIDAI has been encouraging people to keep documents updated in their Aadhaar, especially those who have not updated their Aadhaar cards in over a decade. They can review and amend their information if necessary.

“This free service is available only on #myAadhaar portal,” the agency posted.

Aadhaar number, which is linked to individual biometrics, serves as a unique identifier for each citizen of India. The system also helps identify and weed out fake or ghost identities, thereby preventing potential leakages.

The calls on citizens to update documents in Aadhaar at least once in 10 years.

One can update their demographic details on the myAadhaar portal via documents such as ration card, voter ID, domicile certificate, passport, and passbook, among others.

These documents can be submitted online through the MyAadhaar Portal or at any Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. If submitting online, one can simply log in using the aadhaar number and one-time password received on the individual’s mobile number.

The UIDAI noted that the facility can be availed even by non-resident Indians (NRIs).

NRIs can submit the documents whenever they are present in India, through the online mode, or by visiting the Aadhaar Centre.

Even a newborn child can be enrolled for Aadhaar “by providing birth certificate and Aadhaar number of the parents”, as per the UIDAI. But their Aadhaar biometrics must be updated between 5 and 15 years.

ADB to help Bangladesh for vital structural reforms

Dhaka, Sep 16 (IANS) The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said it will help the Bangladeshi interim government’s efforts for vital structural reforms in the country.

The Manila-based lender expressed its eagerness to help the crisis-ridden South Asian economy, as a senior ADB delegation, led by its South Asia Director General Takeo Konishi, called on Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus of the interim Bangladeshi government in Dhaka on Sunday.

The senior ADB official said the bank has a long history of working in Bangladesh and would be keen to support the interim government to initiate vital structural reforms in the country, Xinhua news agency reported.

Yunus informed the ADB delegation that they were in a ground-zero situation. “Everything needs to be done as quickly as possible.”

As part of his bids to reform Bangladesh, Yunus on Wednesday announced that the government has decided to form six commissions to reform the judiciary, election system, administration, police, anti-corruption commission, and the constitution.

Japan’s launch of H2A rocket postponed again

Tokyo, Sep 16 (IANS) The scheduled launch of an H2A rocket carrying an information-gathering satellite from a space centre on a southwestern Japan island was postponed on Monday for a second time, the rocket manufacturer said.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. said it decided to postpone the launch of rocket No. 49 from Tanegashima Space Center on Tanegashima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, scheduled for the afternoon on the day, because of unsuitable wind conditions in the upper atmosphere, Xinhua news agency reported.

The winds expected to blow over the space centre around the scheduled launch time do not meet the criteria for liftoff, Mitsubishi Heavy said, adding that a new date has yet to be fixed.

The rocket carrying the Japanese government’s eighth information-gathering radar satellite was initially planned to depart Wednesday but the launch was postponed to Monday due to expected bad weather, according to the manufacturer.

The operation of the H2A is expected to end in fiscal 2024 through next March with the launch of rocket No. 50. The next-generation H3 rocket is then set to replace it.
