New method provides more detailed understanding of the magnetic field of the sun

Share

New Delhi, Aug 22 (IANS) Using information from the Kodaikanal Tower Tunnel Telescope, researchers at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) have developed a novel way to investigate the Sun’s magnetic field.

By examining the magnetic field at various solar atmospheric layers, this technique sheds light on solar phenomena such as the dynamics of the solar wind and the “coronal heating problem”.

The layers that make up the solar atmosphere are connected by magnetic fields, which move mass and energy from the inner to the outer layers. It is necessary to take accurate magnetic field measurements at various heights in order to comprehend these processes. The observational method known as simultaneous multi-line spectropolarimetry has shown promise in elucidating the chromospheric fluctuations during solar flares and the magnetic structure of sunspots.

A dynamic sunspot region with intricate features was the subject of a study conducted by IIA astronomers. By means of concurrent observations in the Calcium II 8662 Å and Hydrogen-alpha (Hα) spectral lines, the group examined the stratification of the magnetic field at different elevations inside the solar atmosphere.

The data used in this study were provided by the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, which is most known for having discovered the Evershed Effect in 1909. The results of the study showed that the Hα line is an essential probe of the chromospheric magnetic field, especially in the case of solar flares and other abrupt temperature swings.

As a result, the Hα line samples higher air layers than the Ca II 8662 Å line, which consistently infers stronger magnetic fields. At the photosphere, the magnetic field strength was measured to be 2000 G, and at the chromosphere, it was 500 G.

“Our study highlights the Hα line’s effectiveness in probing the chromospheric magnetic field, especially in flaring regions,” said Harsh Mathur, the lead author.

The study, which has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, highlights the potential for a deeper understanding of the Sun’s magnetic field stratification that may be obtained with cutting-edge observatories like the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) and the upcoming European Solar Telescope (EST).

Prof Carl Kocher attempts to demystify quantum physics in an admirable way

Share

New Delhi, Aug 22 (IANS) Quantum physics long remains an enigmatic and fascinating branch of science, with lots of scientists, from Albert Einstein to Richard Feynman all doing their calculations and winning accolades.

But quantum physics is a loop, it continues to baffle even the most experienced but today another scientist has tried to demystify it in a recently published article.

Professor Carl Kocher through his own life story tries to make head and tail of this subject, defying the way questions or subjects like these are handled.

The article titled ‘Quantum Entanglement of Optical Photons: The First Experiment, 1964-67’ published in the journal Frontiers in Quantum Science and Technology delves into uncharted scientific territory.

This article stands apart from traditional scientific writing by offering a first-person narrative that details not only the strategic challenges faced during the experiment but also an interpretation of the results and their broader significance.

The experiment aimed to explore the phenomenon of quantum entanglement, specifically through the behaviour of optical photons, a subject that has intrigued physicists since the mid-20th century. The author through his life story tries to make things simpler for the layman reader, the topic being the EPR paradox.

The gyroscope and quantum theory both elucidate paradoxical behaviour, but the EPR paradox, introduced by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen in 1935, remains a central mystery in quantum physics. The gyroscope defied gravity, while quantum theory explained atoms and molecules. The EPR paradox remains a central mystery in quantum physics.

A gyroscope purchased at the age of eight by the author became a source of fascination due to its ability to defy gravity by spinning on a horizontal plane, a behaviour that, while seemingly paradoxical, is logically explained by Newtonian mechanics.

Similarly, quantum theory, developed in the 1920s, has been successful in explaining atomic and molecular interactions. However, the EPR paradox, introduced in 1935 by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen, highlighted a puzzling aspect of quantum theory: the entanglement of particles. This phenomenon, where measurements on one particle appear to influence another’s state, even across vast distances, remains a central mystery in quantum physics.

In 1964, an experiment was designed to observe quantum entanglement using visible-light photons emitted by excited calcium atoms. The experiment confirmed quantum theory’s predictions with striking precision, demonstrating the reality of quantum entanglement and challenging classical intuition.

While Newtonian mechanics fully explains a gyroscope’s behaviour, quantum entanglement continues to challenge classical understanding. The experiment serves as a bridge, expanding the understanding of quantum phenomena and highlighting the “strangely wonderful” nature of the quantum world.

Despite its challenges to classical causality, it remains baffling to date which is what the author finds wonderful, he is not saying he has demystified it but the attempt to do so remains admirable.

Prime Minister Modi also thanked Zelensky and the Ukrainian authorities for the help and support they provided in the safe evacuation of Indian students from the warzone a few weeks after the conflict began in February 2022.

The Joint statement issued after the one-on-one and delegation-level talks mentioned that both leaders emphasised the need for “sincere and practical engagement” between all parties to develop innovative solutions that would be widely accepted and contribute to the speedy restoration of peace.

It also stated that both leaders have expressed mutual interest in working on upgrading bilateral relations from a comprehensive partnership to a strategic partnership in the future.

The two sides recognised pharmaceutical cooperation as one of the strongest pillars of the partnership with the two leaders reaffirming the desirability of greater access to markets and the promotion of investment and joint ventures, including through testing, inspection and registration procedures.

“Both parties expressed their desire to expand cooperation in the field of medicines and pharmaceuticals, in particular in the field of education and exchange of best practices. They welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the State Service of Medicines and Drug Control of Ukraine and the Central Organization for the Control of Medicines Standards of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India,” the Joint Statement detailed.

YCP Removes Duvvada Srinivas from Party Post Amidst Personal Controversy

Share

The YCP party has faced a significant setback with the emergence of a personal controversy involving party leader Duvvada Srinivas. The issue, which dominated media headlines for several days, involved allegations of infidelity and family discord.

Duvvada Srinivas’s alleged relationship with Divvela Madhuri, whom she described as her “guide and philosopher,” led to protests by his wife and daughter at his residence. The situation escalated, requiring police intervention to maintain order.

Despite previously criticizing Pawan Kalyan’s marital issues, Duvvada Srinivas found himself in a similar predicament. The YCP leadership, however, chose to remain silent on the matter until recently.

In a decisive move, the YCP has removed Duvvada Srinivas from his position as in-charge of Tekkali. Perada Tilak has been appointed as his replacement to oversee party activities in the region.

The YCP’s decision to act swiftly on this issue can be attributed to the party’s recent electoral setbacks. The party’s performance in the 2024 elections, declining from 151 seats to 11, has made it imperative to address internal issues and maintain a strong public image.

By removing Duvvada Srinivas, the YCP aims to distance itself from the controversy and demonstrate its commitment to upholding party values and discipline.

NASA to Determine Fate of Astronauts Aboard the International Space Station

The safe return of astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore from the International Space Station (ISS) has been delayed due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. NASA is scheduled to convene a high-level meeting on Saturday to assess the situation and determine the best course of action.

Concerns have arisen regarding the safety of the Starliner vehicle, following the detection of propulsion system issues. NASA will carefully evaluate whether the spacecraft is suitable for transporting the astronauts back to Earth. If deemed unsafe, the agency may opt to return the crew using alternative means, such as a SpaceX capsule.

Utilizing a SpaceX capsule for the return journey would likely extend the mission timeline. A potential launch date in September has been suggested, with the mission completion anticipated to take several months. The original plan for Williams and Wilmore to return within a week has been disrupted by the unforeseen technical challenges.

The Boeing Starliner’s inaugural crewed mission has encountered difficulties, underscoring the complexities of space travel. NASA’s priority remains the safe and timely return of the astronauts to Earth. The agency’s decision on Saturday will determine the next steps in this ongoing mission.
