Cambodia: 12 door guardian statues unearthed at Angkor

Archaeologists have discovered 12 door guardian statues during a recent excavation at the north gate of the ancient Royal Palace within Angkor Thom in Cambodia’s Angkor Archaeological Park, the Apsara National Authority (ANA) reported on Monday.The ANA is the government agency responsible for managing, safeguarding and preserving the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO-listed world heritage site, situated in Siem Reap province.

Archaeologist Sorn Chanthorn said the archaeological effort was a collaborative project between the ANA and the China-Cambodia Government Team for Safeguarding Angkor (CCSA), Xinhua news agency reported.”These statues were uncovered while studying the gate’s structure and searching for fallen stones,” he said. “Notably, the 12th statue was found buried at a depth of 140 cm,” he said.

Chanthorn added that these sandstone statues vary in size and shape, with some measuring 110 cm high and others 100 cm high, “Each statue features different facial and hair ornaments.”After the discovery, the archaeological team documented the statues’ original locations, took photographs, and prepared for cleaning and restoration before returning them to their initial positions, he added.

“Experts believe these door guardian statues exemplify the Khleang style, aligning with the construction period of the 11th century Royal Palace,” Chanthorn said.The ancient Royal Palace is a large rectangularly walled area located within Angkor Thom in the Angkor Archaeological Park, which is the most popular tourist destination in the Southeast Asian nation.

The Angkor Archaeological Park attracted almost 700,000 international visitors during the January-September period of 2024, earning a gross revenue of $32.5 million from ticket sales, according to the state-owned Angkor Enterprise.

Woman dies, 50 fall ill after eating momos in Hyderabad

A woman died and about 50 others were taken ill after eating momos at a roadside food stall in Banjara Hills here.Some of the victims filed a complaint with Banjara Hills Police on Monday. They said they ate momos from a stall on Friday.Police registered a case and took up the investigation. Two persons selling momos were arrested.Reshma Begum (31), her children and several other people of Singadakunta Basti ate momos on Friday. They developed vomits and motions on Saturday and approached different hospitals in Banjara Hills.

After Reshma Begum’s condition turned critical, she was shifted to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), where she succumbed.Officials suspect that in addition to momos, mayonnaise and chutney may have caused the food poisoning.Meanwhile, about 36 students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in Peddapalli district were taken ill due to suspected food poisoning.The incident occurred at Mutharam mandal headquarters, on Sunday night. The female students were suffering from cough and difficulty breathing.

All of them were admitted in the government hospital Peddapalli. According to District Medical and Health Officer, K. Pramood Kumar, except cough and difficulty in breathing, the health condition of the students was stable.Denying the possibility of food poisoning, DMHO said that students would have developed vomits and motions if they consumed toxic food. However, except cough, no student complained about vomiting and motions, he made it clear.

Anxious parents, who rushed to the hospital, alleged that the school authorities made the students remove the grass in the premises. They said the school staff sprayed pesticides before they asked students to remove the grass and exposure to pesticides may have resulted in their falling ill.

Afghanistan launches anti-polio campaign targeting 6.2 million children

Kabul, Oct 28 (IANS) The Afghan caretaker government’s Ministry of Public Health on Monday announced a three-day vaccination campaign aimed at protecting 6.2 million children under the age of five from poliovirus.Running from Monday to Wednesday, the campaign will provide anti-polio drops to children in 16 out of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces, said Sharafat Zaman Amarkhil, spokesperson for the ministry.

In his message, Amarkhil urged tribal elders, religious scholars, and parents to cooperate with polio workers to implement the campaign appropriately, Xinhua news agency reported.”There are no confirmed positive polio cases registered in Afghanistan in 2024. The ministry is trying to eradicate this wild virus by launching vaccine campaigns,” Amarkhil said.

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a viral disease that can cause paralysis or death in some people. It’s highly contagious and mainly affects children under five years of age.The Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched in 1988 to eradicate polio worldwide. Since then, wild poliovirus cases have decreased by over 99 per cent. As of 2022, wild poliovirus type-1 is still endemic in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

40 terrorists killed in Mali, says army

Bamako, Oct 28 (IANS) As many as 40 terrorists were killed in two military operations last week in Mali.The first operation took place on October 24 in Ounguel, in the region of Segou, where “an enemy base was destroyed, around 30 terrorists were neutralised, and weapons, ammunition and 24 motorcycles were seized,” the army said in a statement on Sunday.

The second operation, carried out on October 25, “resulted in the elimination of around ten terrorists and the recovery of various equipment, including pickup trucks and motorcycles,” Xinhua news agency reported.

Mali has been grappling with a complex crisis since 2012, marked by separatist and jihadist insurgencies, along with intercommunal violence, which has claimed thousands of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of others.

Confident of making Indian Space Station a launching point for lunar exploration

New Delhi, Oct 27 (IANS) With the expertise in lander technology ISRO is confident of making Bhartiya Antriksh Space Station a launching point for lunar exploration, said Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman of the Indian space agency.

He said this while delivering a lecture on ‘Indian Space Odyssey: In Search of New Frontiers’ at the prestigious Sardar Patel Memorial Lecture 2024, hosted by Akashvani at Rang Bhawan in New Delhi.

In his lecture, Somanath, a distinguished scientist, provided insights into India’s Space Vision 2047. He highlighted the mission of an Indian landing on the Moon.

“ISRO has made significant improvements in lander technology,” said Dr. Somanath while introducing “the concept of a Bhartiya Antriksh Space Station as a launching point for lunar exploration”. He also spoke extensively about the development of reusable rockets, and shared plans for future exploration. This included missions to Venus to study its orbit, surface, and subsurface after successful missions to the Moon and Mars.

Besides space missions, Somanath said that ISRO focuses on meeting the country’s application needs in natural resource management, satellite communication, and navigation.

ISRO has, since the beginning, developed indigenous capabilities in building satellites, space transportation systems, and associated ground segments.

Meanwhile, Somanath also praised India’s space journey “as a testament to its indomitable spirit and commitment to leveraging space technology for the betterment of humanity”.

The country’s space programme will continue to inspire and shape a world where space technology fosters a safer and better planet, he noted.

The lecture was attended by more than 600 college students, organised by Prasar Bharati, India’s public service broadcaster at the Rang Bhawan Auditorium of Akashvani.

The prestigious annual lecture series commemorates the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the Iron Man of India, and began with an inaugural address by Shri C. Rajagopalachari in 1955.

Iraq files complaint to UN over Israel’s use of its airspace to attack Iran

Baghdad, Oct 28 (IANS) Iraq has submitted a letter of protest to the UN secretary-general and the Security Council, condemning Israel’s blatant violation of Iraq’s airspace and sovereignty to launch an attack on Iran, Iraqi government spokesman Basim al-Awadi said on Monday.

Iraq will not allow its airspace or land to be used for attacks on other nations, particularly neighbouring countries with whom Iraq shares mutual respect and interests, al-Awadi said in a statement.

The Iraqi government reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the country’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, it said.

This stance reflects Iraq’s commitment to regional stability, said the statement, adding that the country supports promoting peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue and mutual understanding.

The Israel Defense Forces said on Saturday that it launched “precise and targeted” airstrikes on targets in several areas in Iran in response to the attacks from Iran in recent months.

Jordan evacuates 10 nationals from Lebanon

Amman, Oct 28 (IANS) Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has announced the evacuation of 10 Jordanian citizens from Lebanon aboard a military plane, which had carried food, relief supplies, medicine, and medical equipment for the Lebanese.

Sufian Qudah, the Ministry’s spokesperson, said that the number of Jordanian aid planes sent to Lebanon has reached 14, with two military planes landing at Lebanon’s Rafic Hariri International Airport on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The number of evacuation flights for Jordanian citizens in Lebanon has reached seven, the Ministry added.

Qudah said that 174 Jordanian citizens have been evacuated from Lebanon aboard Royal Jordanian Air Force planes.

According to the spokesperson, since August, 3,353 Jordanian citizens have returned to the Kingdom from Lebanon through Queen Alia International Airport, in addition to those who arrived by land through the Jaber Border Crossing.

In addition, seven flights have been dedicated to evacuating Jordanian citizens in Lebanon, bringing the total number of evacuated citizens to 174.

These evacuations include all those registered on the electronic platform at the Jordanian Embassy in Beirut.

Since early August, 3,353 Jordanians have returned home from Lebanon via Queen Alia International Airport, with additional numbers arriving overland through the Jaber border crossing – the statement added.

The evacuation operations are part of a coordinated plan between the Ministry, the Jordanian Armed Forces – Arab Army, the security agencies, the Interior Ministry, and the National Centre for Security and Crisis Management to ensure the safe repatriation of Jordanians amid ongoing hostilities in Lebanon.

Uruguay’s presidential candidates face runoff in November

Montevideo, Oct 28 (IANS) Uruguay’s two leading presidential candidates will face off in a run-off on November 24, as neither secured the majority needed in general elections, according to the country’s electoral authorities.

With 92 per cent of the votes scrutinised by the electoral court early on Monday, Yamandu Orsi of the left-wing opposition coalition the Broad Front (FA) received 43.5 per cent, while Alvaro Delgado of the centre-right National Party garnered 27 per cent in the elections held on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Orsi, 57, called for Uruguayans to unite and make a “last effort” to win the runoff in a speech to thousands of FA supporters in the Old City of Montevideo. “We are going in these 27 days for that last effort, with more desire than ever, more standing than ever,” he said.

Delgado, 55, also called for winning the runoff at an event flanked by his supporters, expressing his desire to “give Uruguay a course that allowed us to generate prosperity and emerge together from the most difficult moments, such as crises.”

More than 2.7 million Uruguayans were called to the polls to elect a successor to President Luis Lacalle Pou and renew the Parliament for the next five years.

Lucky Baskhar Relates to Everyone: Meenakshi Chaudhary

Meenakshi Chaudhary is one of the most in-demand actresses of South Indian Cinema. Her latest film, Lucky Baskhar with Multi-lingual star actor Dulquer Salmaan is releasing on 31st October worldwide. The most eagerly awaited movie directed by Venky Atluri and produced by Suryadevara Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya of Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas, respectively is making waves post the theatrical trailer release all over India. Composer GV Prakash Kumar’s songs have already gone viral. The beautiful actress, who is playing Baskhar’s wife, Sumathi in the film, interacted with press in Hyderabad as part of promotions for the film.

Here are the excerpts from the lively interaction

Meenakshi Chaudhary stated that she had a great experience with Sithara Entertainments and she is like a family member to the producers. She stated that after Guntur Kaaram, she has grown comfortable working with them. Talking about the Lucky Baskhar shooting experience, she said,” We had a young team who are highly motivated. For me and Dulquer Salmaan garu, we needed to be prepared and feel comfortable to express and understand what the story demands. As we are coming from other languages to Telugu, we don’t understand the language straight away. So, the team were very understanding and working with a great actor like Dulquer garu is a great learning experience.”

About playing a middle-class wife, Sumathi

Meenakshi shared that she cannot keep playing her age all the time. She expressed her desire to play diverse roles in different films in her career. She stated that it is her goal to keep challenging herself and she wants to play all kinds of characters as she cannot play at 40’s every character. She remarked that she can play younger and older roles at this age than at an older age which is inspiring her to push herself.

As Sumathi, she shared that the character never values money. She walks away from her family to stay with Baskhar and she never desires more money than necessary or required. After money comes into their lives while she is happy initally, she has mixed feelings as she misses the Baskhar, she fell in love with. She shared that she observed greed in general around her in humans regarding money. Hence, she felt it is highly relatable. For the character, she shared that she observed her mother and relatives to pull off such a strong woman’s character. Meenaskhi also shared that she got time to prepare for her character, Sumathi and that helped her play the character as per expectations of the director.

We always knew Lucky Baskhar is something special

Meenakshi Chaudhary shared that eevry cast and crew member working on Lucky Baskhar knew the film was something special and great. She stated that she did not want to share too much before movie trailer release. She appreciated young actor Rithvik, who is playing her kid’s role and stated that he came prepared everyday and always got okayed on first take while they used to take multiple takes.

She also appreciated Bangalan and entire production designing team for re-creating 80’s Bombay with extensive research. She remarked that as actors they brought 50% to the scene but it is technical crew that made it 100% with and even made it something special. She specially mentioned Cinematography by Nimish Ravi and music composed by GV Prakash Kumar for their efforts in making the film look real and help them in emoting. She stated that technical crew and production house never compromised on look and feel of the film.

Even I hail from a middle-class household

Meenakshi talking about the importance of money shared that even she hails from a middle-class household. She shared that her father worked in Army and her mother is a homemaker who studied till 10th class only. She shared that they hail from a small village in Punjab and she is the first doctor from her village, first Miss India title and first everything from her family, village in the media field.

She continued to share that they used to buy one size bigger clothes so that they would fit for next year as well. She also shared that her parents used to hand over her books to her younger brother but they always encouraged her to get educated and opined that it is important to every person. She shared that Lucky Baskhar will connect with everyone has most of Indian families are middle-class and the film presents it with utmost sincerity and honesty.

About working with Mahesh and Dulquer Salmaan

She stated that she learnt from the discipline that Mahesh and Dulquer Salmaan showcased on sets of Guntur Kaaram and Lucky Baskhar, respectively. She stated that Mahesh is a thorough professional and she understand what needs to be done instantly. About Dulquer Salmaan, “Even though he is son of an actor and legend like Mammootty, he prepares for the role thoroughly, he picks a different body language, nuances in his get-up from the smallest of things and he inspired me to learn my lines in Telugu and be on my best all the time.” She opined that Dulquer’s humility as helped him become the renowned the actor that he is.

Lucky Baskhar is my redemption for my fans

Meenakshi acknowledged the fact that her fans were disappointed with her role in Guntur Kaaram. She shared that she cannot talk about what happened behind the scenes. But she understands that her fans have certain expectations from her and Lucky Baskhar is her redemption for them. She stated that they will love the film, for sure.

Talking about why one should watch Lucky Baskhar, Meenakshi said, “Lucky Baskhar is full of emotions and highly relatable. Every common man will see themselves on screen.” She further shared that as Sumathi, she felt close to her mother and father. She understood the compromises and sacrifices our mothers’ make. She shared that this very aspect is the strength of the film.

On her future projects

Meenakshi stated that money will come when you keep doing good projects and she would be thrilled to be part of many good films.
