The Mia Khalifa Controversy: A Clash of Tradition and Pop Culture

Share

A recent incident in Tamil Nadu has ignited a fervent debate on the intersection of religion, tradition, and contemporary popular culture. The focal point of this controversy was the unauthorized and inappropriate use of Mia Khalifa’s image on a hoarding promoting the Aadi Perukku festival, a significant religious observance dedicated to Goddess Amman.

The Aadi Perukku festival is deeply entrenched in Tamil culture, characterized by elaborate rituals and festivities that honor the divine feminine. The festival’s sanctity and the reverence accorded to Goddess Amman render the context particularly sensitive. The juxtaposition of this deeply revered tradition with the image of a public figure associated with the adult entertainment industry was perceived by many as a blatant disregard for cultural and religious sentiments.

The unauthorized alteration and appropriation of Khalifa’s image, depicting her in a traditional role incongruous with her public persona, exacerbated the outrage. The hoarding’s viral dissemination on social media rapidly transformed a local incident into a national discourse on issues such as cultural sensitivity, religious appropriation, and the ethics of image manipulation.

Critics argue that the incident reflects a growing insensitivity towards religious beliefs and a disturbing trend of exploiting public figures for commercial or promotional purposes without considering the potential consequences. The controversy also underscores the challenges faced by individuals attempting to transcend their past, as Khalifa’s image continues to be associated with a specific industry despite her efforts to rebrand herself.

Beyond the immediate outrage, this incident prompts a broader reflection on the evolving relationship between tradition and modernity. As society becomes increasingly interconnected through digital platforms, the lines between different cultures and contexts blur. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of cultural consciousness and respect in navigating this complex landscape.

The Telugu film industry is abuzz with anticipation as Nandamuri Balakrishna’s 109th film, tentatively titled NBK 109, continues to gather momentum. Fresh off the success of Bhagavanth Kesari, the veteran actor is once again set to captivate audiences with his dynamic on-screen presence. Helmed by the accomplished director K.S. The production house has skillfully employed a strategic marketing approach, unveiling a conceptual poster featuring an array of weapons and a cryptic tagline, hinting at a complex storyline. The subsequent release of a first look showcasing Balakrishna in a fierce avatar has further ignited fan enthusiasm. The film’s musical score, composed by the talented Thaman S, is anticipated to elevate the dramatic intensity and action sequences that are synonymous with Balakrishna’s cinematic repertoire.

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS) A significant majMajority women keen to use GenAI for career growth, just a third trained to use

Share

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS) A significant majority of women find it crucial to use Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) to boost their careers, yet only one-third are prepared by employers to use the technology, said a report on Thursday.

The report by the IT industry’s apex body Nasscom was launched on the sidelines of the Nasscom Global Inclusion Summit at Bengaluru.

The findings point out that women view Gen AI tools as a significant boost to their perceived competence. About 45 per cent of the surveyed women in tech roles experienced higher confidence compared to their non-tech peers.

In addition, the report outlined that Gen AI adoption is driven by efficiency and innovation, acknowledging its transformative potential.

About 95 per cent of junior, 96 per cent of mid-management, and 100 per cent of senior management women are ready to invest more time to achieve professional success in GenAI. And 1 in 5 women was also found to use GenAI tools almost daily with nearly 35 per cent of senior management women reporting daily usage.

While GenAI can act as an equaliser for women in tech, only 35 per cent of surveyed women respondents felt completely prepared by their employers.

Further, challenges for the lower adoption and usage of GenAI tools among women include limited knowledge, lack of trust, restricted access to these tools, and fear of competence scrutiny. From entry-level roles to the C-suite, women consistently point to knowledge gaps as the primary challenge in adopting Gen AI, the report said.

Despite significant progress in diversity and AI/Gen AI adoption, Sangeeta Gupta, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, Nasscom, voiced out the substantial gaps that continue to limit women’s full potential in the tech industry.

She noted that as “Gen AI is set to dominate the tech industry, it is critical to address key challenges, to empower women in these roles”.

Sreyssha George, Managing Director and Partner, at Boston Consulting Group added that while “globally, senior women lead in GenAI adoption, India lags with a 64 per cent gender disparity in AI leadership”.

She stated that to “capture the $320 billion AI market, India’s tech sector needs diversity”.

“This will ensure effective systems by eliminating biases and incorporating varying ethical perspectives,” George said

To bridge the gender gap, the report called out organisations to play a pivotal role in driving GenAI adoption by creating environments that support and encourage these technologies.

South Korea, US to cooperate in retrieving remains of Korean victims of Japan’s ‘forced mobilisation’

Share

Seoul, Aug 8 (IANS) South Korea and the United States have agreed to tighten their cooperation to excavate and repatriate the remains of Korean victims of Japan’s wartime “forced mobilisation” when Korea was under Japan’s colonial rule, the interior ministry said on Thursday.

The interior ministry signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), which is responsible for recovering unaccounted-for servicemen under the Department of Defense, in Hawaii on Wednesday (US time), Yonhap news agency reported.

Interior Minister Lee Sang-min and DPAA Director Kelly McKeague attended the signing ceremony, the ministry said.

The MoU calls on the two countries to conduct joint excavations, share DNA and scientific data and exchange specialised personnel for the excavation and identification of the remains of Koreans killed in the Pacific region.

More than 5,000 Koreans were killed or remain missing in the Pacific region after being mobilised to work for Japan while the Korean Peninsula was under Japan’s colonial rule from 1910-1945.

In cooperation with the DPAA, South Korea retrieved and identified the remains of Choi Byeong-yeon, a victim of forced mobilisation, and brought them home in December, marking the first repatriation case from the Pacific region.

Police launch probe into bomb threat fax targeting Seoul City Hall

Share

Seoul, Aug 8 (IANS) Police are looking into a fax threatening to blow up Seoul City Hall and other major institutions, though no signs of explosives have been found so far, officials said Thursday.

The Namdaemun Police Station said it received the report of the fax, which claimed it had installed explosives in major facilities, such as Seoul City Hall, and threatened to bomb the places if money was not sent, Yonhap news agency reported.

The fax, written in mixed English and Japanese, was first reported to the Incheon Metropolitan Police which later requested cooperation from the police in charge of Seoul City Hall at around 11 a.m.

Police searched the site near City Hall for signs of explosives, but found none, officials said.

Police suspect the threat could be from the same person who has consistently sent hoax bomb threats via email and fax since August last year.

In particular, email and fax bomb threats that claimed to be written by a Japanese lawyer named Takahiro Karasawa were sent on multiple occasions last year, targeting the Supreme Court, the prosecution, and Seoul City Hall, among many others.

Karasawa wrote on X at the time that his name was being used without permission, adding some extremists were carrying out the crime, which is often not regulated in Japan.
