NASA, SpaceX to send mission with over 3,500 kg cargo to ISS on Sunday

Share

New Delhi, Aug 3 (IANS) US space agency NASA and Elon Musk-run SpaceX are set to launch a cargo mission with 8,200 pounds (3,719.45 kg) of supplies, scientific investigations, and equipment to the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday.

The commercial supplies will be carried to the orbiting lab by Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus spacecraft (NG-21) onboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The launch opportunity is available on Sunday at 11.02 a.m. (ET). It is the 21st commercial resupply mission by Northrop Grumman for NASA.

The scientific experiments aboard Cygnus spacecraft include “tests of water recovery technology, a process to produce stem cells in microgravity, studies of the effects of spaceflight on microorganism DNA, liver tissue growth, and live science demonstrations for students”.

In addition, the NG-21 will also carry two tiny CubeSats, as part of NASA’s ELaNa (Educational Launch of Nanosatellites) programme. It will be deployed from the ISS after the Cygnus docks on August 5.

The NG-21 has been named the S.S. Richard “Dick” Scobee, after the NASA astronaut who commanded the ill-fated STS-51-L mission of the space shuttle Challenger.

Shortly after liftoff on January 28, 1986, Challenger exploded, claiming the lives of Scobee and his six crewmates.

The Cygnus will be docked using the station’s robotic arm, and installed on the Unity module’s Earth-facing port on the ISS.

The spacecraft will spend almost six months connected to the orbiting laboratory before departing in January 2025.

The orbiting lab currently houses 7 persons — five from Expedition 71 — Oleg Kononenko, Tracy Dyson, Mike Barratt, Matthew Dominick, Jeanette Epps, Nikolai Chub, and Alexander Grebenkin; and two Starliner crew — Indian-origin, Sunita Williams, and Butch Wilmore.

IIT-Roorkee’s unique tech to revolutionise the field of adaptive optics

Share

Roorkee, Aug 3 (IANS) A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has developed a unique technology that can revolutionise the field of adaptive optics, the institute said in a study released on Saturday.

Their innovative work has led to the development of a Dielectric Elastomer-Based Variable Focal Length Reflector, which will pave the way for dynamic focusing and beam control.

The reflector represents a significant advancement in soft adaptive optics.

The innovative device demonstrates remarkable structural resilience, allowing for efficient management of applied pressure in both concave and convex reflector configurations revealed the study reported in the journal Smart Materials and Structures.

Moreover, the device’s dynamic control over curvature through the adjustment of electric potential enables precise tuning of the focal length, making it ideal for applications requiring dynamic focusing or beam manipulation in optical systems, said researchers led by Kartik Kashyap.

Kashyap, who is currently working with the US Air Force Research Laboratory and Ford Motor Company as a PhD student at Ohio State University, spearheaded this cutting-edge research while at IIT-Roorkee.

A notable aspect of the research lies in the fabrication of the reflective membrane by sputter-depositing silver metal onto the dielectric membrane. This method offers enhanced control and precision in shaping the reflective surface, they noted.

The work has also been granted an Indian patent, showcasing IIT Roorkee’s commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in scientific research.

“The groundbreaking research led by Kartik Kashyap and his team on the Dielectric Elastomer-Based Variable Focal Length Reflector exemplifies our dedication to pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge. This revolutionary advancement in adaptive optics not only showcases the ingenuity of our researchers but also highlights the collaborative spirit and cutting-edge capabilities of our institution,” said K.K. Pant, Director, IIT-Roorkee.

Will continue to monitor possibility of North Korea conducting nuclear test

Share

Washington, Aug 3 (IANS) The United States will continue to monitor the possibility of North Korea conducting another nuclear test, a Pentagon spokesperson said, amid concerns that Pyongyang could engage in provocative acts around the US presidential election in November.

Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh made the remarks on Friday after South Korean Defence Minister Shin Won-sik said in a recent interview with Bloomberg that South Korea is not ruling out the possibility of a North Korean nuclear test before or after the US general election, Yonhap news agency reported.

“It’s something that we’re going to continue to monitor and something that we will always work with our ROK and Japanese allies on and coordinate on,” she said, referring to South Korea by its official name, the Republic of Korea.

“But any tests like that are incredibly destabilising to the region, and we will continue to monitor,” she added.

Singh also reiterated that the US wants to see the “denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.”

In the interview with Bloomberg, Shin said that Pyongyang has completed preparations to conduct what would be its seventh nuclear test “when a decision is made” and that the North could conduct it before or after the election to “raise its leverage against the US.”

Ram Gopal Varma’s Cautionary Note on Mythological Films

Share

Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has stirred controversy with his recent comments on the trend of mythological films in Indian cinema. The director, known for his unconventional approach to storytelling, expressed concerns about the potential pitfalls of reimagining mythological narratives in the contemporary era.

Varma argued that the deep-rooted reverence for mythological figures in Indian society creates a complex landscape for filmmakers. While acknowledging the successful ventures of the past, he believes the current climate of heightened social media scrutiny and polarization makes it challenging to reinterpret these revered stories without facing backlash.

The director cited the example of “Adipurush,” highlighting the controversies surrounding the film’s visual representation of characters. He suggested that filmmakers might be better served by creating original narratives rather than attempting to modernize mythological epics. Varma emphasized the importance of avoiding unnecessary controversies and focusing on fresh storytelling.

While Varma’s perspective offers a unique viewpoint on the challenges faced by filmmakers in this genre, it’s essential to note that the success of mythological films continues to vary. Some films have garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, indicating a potential audience for innovative interpretations of these timeless tales.

Ultimately, the reception of mythological films depends on various factors, including the filmmaker’s approach, the execution of the story, and the audience’s evolving expectations.

Bollywood’s Box Office Blues in 2024

Share

The year 2024 has proven to be a challenging one for the Bollywood film industry.

Despite the presence of established and promising stars, the box office has witnessed a series of underwhelming performances.

While the pan-Indian film “Kalki 2898 AD” has emerged as the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, surpassing the 290 crore mark, no other Bollywood star has managed to reach the 250 crore threshold. High-profile actors such as Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Kartik Aaryan, and Tiger Shroff have faced significant setbacks with their respective releases.

Akshay Kumar, once a consistent box office draw, has experienced a series of commercial failures. His films “Bade Miyan Chote Miyan” and “Sarfira” have underperformed significantly, with the latter registering one of the lowest opening day collections for the actor in recent times.

Ajay Devgn, another veteran actor, has also faced challenges. His horror drama “Shaitaan” managed to garner some success, but his subsequent releases, “Maidaan” and “Auron Mein Kaha Dum Tha,” have been commercial disappointments. The latter, in particular, has witnessed a dismal opening day and low occupancy rates.

These underwhelming performances have raised concerns about the health of the Bollywood industry and have prompted discussions about the changing dynamics of the box office. As the year progresses, the industry will be closely watching the performance of upcoming releases to gauge the overall trend.

It remains to be seen if “Auron Mein Kaha Dum Tha” can recover over the weekend or if it will follow the trajectory of other recent box office failures.
