New humidity-driven membrane to help remove CO2 from air
New Delhi, July 19 (IANS) An ambient-energy-driven membrane that efficiently removes carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the air has been developed by UK researchers, revealed a study on Friday.
While CO2 is the main contributor to climate change, as humans release about 40 billion tonnes into the atmosphere every year, separating the greenhouse gas from the air is very challenging due to its dilute concentration.
The study, published in the journal Nature Energy, explained that dilute separation processes are challenging due to the low concentration and high energy requirements.
The team, collaborating with several universities, utilised natural humidity differences to drive the membrane, overcoming energy and kinetic challenges.
“Direct air capture will be a key component of the energy system of the future,” said Dr. Greg Mutch, from the Royal Academy of Engineering.
“In our work, we demonstrate the first synthetic membrane capable of capturing carbon dioxide from the air and increasing its concentration without a traditional energy input like heat or pressure. I think a helpful analogy might be a water wheel on a flour mill. Whereas a mill uses the downhill transport of water to drive milling, we use it to pump carbon dioxide out of the air,” he added.
The team tested a new CO2-permeable membrane with a variety of humidity differences applied across it. When the humidity was higher on the output side of the membrane, the membrane spontaneously pumped CO2 into that output stream, the researchers said.
Further, using advanced techniques like X-ray micro-computed tomography, the membrane’s structure was precisely characterised, and density-functional-theory calculations identified unique carriers that transport both CO2 and water.
This innovative approach harnesses the energy from humidity differences to drive CO2 through the membrane from low to high concentrations.
Elon Musk bats for CO2 tax to tackle climate change crisis
New Delhi, July 18 (IANS) Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has advocated for a carbon dioxide tax to confront the ongoing climate change crisis.
Musk said in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday that a CO2 tax, if properly levied, would provide much leverage in solving the problems of the fast-rising CO2 levels.
He added, “If we do need something to tax, it should be something potentially harmful, instead of something potentially beneficial, as is done for vegetables and fruits, instead of tobacco and liquor.”
The tech billionaire disagreed with those who believe that this crisis will be catastrophic in the next five to ten years but agreed that the long-term risk is very real, even if one views life simply at a given CO2 level.
He mentioned in a graphics attached with his X post that the ideal outdoor air is 400 ppm but the current levels are much higher than this, meaning they are at least 800 ppm as compared to the ideal of 400, and that things would go out of hand if the level transcended 1000 and above.
Israel: One killed, 10 injured in Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv
Jerusalem, July 19 (IANS) A long-range drone exploded in central Tel Aviv on Friday in an attack claimed by Houthi forces that killed a man and injured at least 10 others, according to Israeli sources.
At approximately 3 a.m. local time, the large drone exploded over Ben Yehuda Street, about 140 metres from the US Embassy and the Tel Aviv shoreline, Israel’s cultural and financial centre, Xinhua news agency reported.
No air raid sirens were activated. The Israeli military said in a statement that it has launched an investigation into the failure of the air defence systems in intercepting the drone and why sirens were not triggered.
“The IAF (Israel Air Force) has increased its air patrols to protect Israeli airspace,” the military said, adding that there was no change in the Home Front Command’s defensive guidelines for residents.
A police statement said that a man in his 50s was found dead in his home with shrapnel wounds; 10 injured persons were evacuated from the scene and are undergoing medical treatment.
Tel Aviv District Police Commander Peretz Amar told reporters that the explosion was heard in other cities in central Israel.
“The destruction is spread over a relatively large area,” he said, adding that the police believe the explosion occurred midair.
“We have testimonies from civilians who saw a red explosion in the sky, which explains why the explosion did not occur in a building or on the ground,” he said.
Houthi spokesman Yahya Sare’e wrote on X that the attack was in retaliation for Israel’s ongoing offensive in the Gaza Strip. He said the drone struck one of the many possible targets of the Houthis, including “sensitive military and security targets”.
He also claimed the strike was executed using a new drone called ‘Yafa’, which is capable of bypassing interception systems and undetectable by radar.”
Singapore sends military vessel, helicopter to rescue tankers on fire
Singapore, July 19 (IANS) Singapore has dispatched a navy ship and an air force helicopter to rescue two tankers on fire within its Maritime Search and Rescue Region, said the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) Friday.
MPA was alerted to a fire onboard a Singapore-flagged tanker and a Sao Tome and Principe-flagged tanker this morning, which were 55 km northeast of Pedra Branca, Xinhua news agency reported.
The passing vessels were also requested to assist in the search and rescue operations.
Search and rescue operations are still underway.
