Big Debate: Is RRR A Telugu Film Or Indian Film?

Share

We all know the sensation RRR created. Though the SS Rajamouli’s directorial was made in Telugu, it was released in multiple languages. Movie lovers across the nation loved the visual wonder and made the film a big hit. The multistarrer became one of the highest-earning films in the country.

Now RRR starring Ram Charan and NTR won the prestigious Oscars award. Indians started celebrating the big win. The big moment also started the debate on whether the film should be celebrated as a Telugu film or an Indian film.

Politicians and celebrities in Telugu states are feeling happy that a Telugu film won a global award and made the country proud. A Telugu song winning the Oscars award is the first time. However, others are seeing this as a win for an Indian film.

Celebrated Singer Adnan Sami who has been saying that RRR should be seen as an Indian film made his stand clear once again. After the Oscars win, AP CM Jagan said that the Telugu flag is flying high with the award. But the singer did not like this creating regional divides is not a good thing.

Both ideas are correct as far as the RRR’s success is concerned. It is made in Telugu and the Telugu director, producer, and heroes are part of the film. So we can say that RRR is a Telugu film and Telugu people across the two states are feeling proud for placing the Telugu language on a big stage. Moreover, the song won an award for the Telugu version-Naatu Naatu.

On the other hand, RRR would have not reached a big stage. After the Hindi version was released on Netflix, RRR became a phenomenon among western audiences. Movie lovers in other languages owning the film is a big reason behind the RRR’s success.

Indians are feeling proud of the big moment and Telugu fans are even happy about the heights Telugu cinema reached. At a global event, Rajamouli said, RRR is made in Telugu, an Indian language and it is not a Bollywood film. Moreover, there is nothing wrong with the tweet made by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Both Jagan and Adnan Sami have a valid point in their versions.

Natural Star Nani stunned one and all with his ferocious performance as Dharani in the teaser of his maiden Pan India film Dasara. Srikanth Odela is directing the movie, while Sudhakar Cherukuri is producing it. Keerthy Suresh will be seen as Nani’s ladylove in the movie.

The theatrical trailer of Dasara will be released on March 14th. They have locked the time and venue for the trailer launch. The Oscars is a prestigious award and it is the dream of every actor and filmmaker to take the award home. Winning the award makes the winner get big popularity across the globe. Indians eagerly waited for the 2023 Oscars ceremony as a few films and documentaries were nominated for the celebrated award.

Pride Of Indian Cinema RRR scripted history by winning the Oscars for “Best Original Song”. On top of this, The Elephant Whisperers also won the prestigious award under the Best Documentary Short Subject category. Indians are celebrating the two Oscars awards.

However, another documentary that carried high expectations for winning the award fell short of the Oscars. All That Breathes, which deals with two important aspects, the rescue of birds and the growing pollution in the national capital Delhi, lost the Oscars award. The Oscars award is a mix of emotions for Indians.

The ceremony saw India winning two awards and losing one. Many felt that Shaunak Sen’s documentary would win the prestigious award. However, All That Breathes could not make it to the winning line and bring the award home. The documentary won a few prestigious awards earlier.

Director Shaunak Sen was impressed with two brothers Nadeem Shehzad and Mohammad Saud, who run a bird clinic rescuing and treating thousands of various birds. Having liked their story, the director decided to make a documentary on this. The documentary focuses mainly on black kites.

The documentary also highlights the rise of pollution in the national capital Delhi with the big jump in the population.

The documentary was released in 2022. After its premiere, the documentary impressed many and was premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. It won the Grand Jury Prize. At the Cannes Film Festival, the documentary won the Golden Eye.

All That Breathes added a few feathers to its cap with prestigious awards like Firebird Award at the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), Grierson Award in the Documentary Competition at BFI London Film Festival. The documentary already won around two dozen awards at various ceremonies. It was also nominated for the Oscars. However, it could not win the award.

Tammareddy Opens Up About ‘Naatu Naatu’ Winning Oscar!

Share

Producer and director Tammareddy Bharadwaj faced a lot of comments and criticism over his words on ‘RRR’. Talking about the team spending 80 crores for Oscar campaign, he said, “They’ve spent nearly ₹80 Cr on the Oscar campaign. If that budget is given to you (aspiring filmmakers in the audience), you would have made 10 films and tossed them on their faces. But that’s their money their wish. So you write a story and approach someone like a Dil Raju or Bol Raju to make it into a film.”

Legendary director Raghavendra Rao took to Twitter and asked, “Do you have the accounts information to claim the promotional budget crossed 80 crore? Did Hollywood greats like James Cameroon and Steven Spielberg take money to praise the film?” Mega brother Nagababu went ahead and used foul language which created a huge controversy. Tammareddy gave a counter by replying with some strong words as well.

With the movie winning an Oscar now, Tammareddy Bharadwaj released a new video where he said, “Keeravani getting the Oscar feels like I won the Oscar. I am very happy. As a big person in the family, I said that it cost a lot of promotions. The situation where I said that is separate and my intention is not to criticise them. I am the happiest person if they get fame and name. This industry is my family and no one care about the small differences in this family. They know about me and we got an Oscar. Once again, congratulations to Rajamouli, Keeravani, Chandrabose and the entire ‘RRR’ team’.”

Malvika Nair: Phalana Abbayi Phalana Ammayi is a true representation of who I am as an artiste

Share

Phalana Abbayi Phalana Ammayi (PAPA) is Srinivas Avasarala’s film with his trademark comedy, emotion, and classical touches. The cute pairing of Naga Shourya and Malvika Nair, and their sparkling chemistry shall be the highlight of the film. The movie is produced by produced by People Media Factory in collaboration with Dasari Productions. Ahead of the release on March 17, Malvika Nair spoke to the media.

Phalana Abbayi Phalana Ammayi looks like a long journey for you. Can you tell us how it happened?

I am repeatedly watching the trailer of Phalana Abbayi Phalana Ammayi. For the first time, I felt it is a representation of who I am as an artiste. So far, I gave my best to the film and to my character and the rest is left to the crew. More than as an actor, I was looking at the film by stepping into the shoes of the director. To work with somebody like Srinivas Avasarala, who learnt the ropes of filmmaking in the USA. And came back to India to work in Telugu cinema. He loves the language. He has good command over the language. In the process, my Telugu speaking skills too improved. I happened to work with sync sound in the film. I am happy about the output.

Can we assume that the story is about a journey of a boy and a girl at a specific time frame?

The time frame is between 18 and 28 years. Usually, if you take any love story, the relationship unfolds across two, three years. My co-star Naga Shaurya had really worked hard to get the look, first as a college-goer and the time when he does Masters. So, every chapter in the movie has a kind of theme. One has all happy moments. And the other is again full of hatred. I feel like I did a good job.

This film is about the journey of me and Naga Shaurya. So I truly felt the urge to do such a story when I first heard the narration from director Srinivas Avasarala.

Characters in Srinivas Avasarala’s films are closer to real life, you’re supposed to tone down your acting when you work with him. Please share your experience.

It is difficult for me to enact something without understanding a character. Even if I dub for my characters, they ask me to open up and dramatise things. In this film, I don’t talk with an extra added amount of sweetness. It is very normal which I liked to do in the film.

Do you relate to the character in the film?

No, I think I relate more to Sanjay’s character played by Naga Shaurya than my character. I play the role of Anupama in the film. She is a bit reserved. Coming to real life, I am a person who loves to give. But if I am hurt by anyone, I will distance them from my life. Scenes may seem repetitive in a love story but the reason we fight sometimes appears that it’s all the same everywhere.

During promotions, Naga Shaurya has said that nobody can remake ‘Phalana Abbayi Phalana Ammayi’. What’s your observation on this?

I think when we are on the sets, only three to four people would know what is being made. DOP, actors and of course the director of the film know the job and what’s going on on the sets. And the rest of the crew would dispose of things, it’s a routine job for them. I think Shaurya might have felt the magic of the making somewhere there.

Is it a regular film or an experimental one?

I can’t say it is a regular film. Definitely, there is no emotion that we can’t connect to. You feel good when you see the film.

In real life, most of the time the boy first makes it’s the boy who first makes advances to propose to a girl. But in the trailer, it is you who is making all the efforts and the boy is avoiding it.

Yes, the boy’s character is very shy in the film. But in the movie, there is no specific scene where I propose to him. Their friendship gradually makes them discover the relationship. The film has real characters, real-life conversations without the third person.

How justifiable it is to bring a realistic film like ‘Phalana Abbayi Phalana Ammayi’ into the market where commercial cinema holds sway?

It’s about the audience who watches it. At the end of the day, it is for the entertainment that they’re paying for. We’re not giving any crash course on life here. If Srinivas’ writing is here to entertain the audience as realistically as possible, that is his way of making a movie. As long as audiences are happy, it doesn’t matter whether you’re making a realistic film or a commercial film.

What were you reactions to the intimate scenes in the film?

No, if you watch the trailer, it is just that. That’s how tastefully they have done it. As a woman, I didn’t feel uncomfortable, I didn’t feel objectified, to show in a specific manner, or tantalise anybody. I felt it’s a natural part of it and there is so much story apart from that.

What is it like to travel with the character these many years?

During the shooting in the UK, I struggled a lot to let go of my emotions soon after the shooting. Srinivas helped me to overcome the situations at that time.

You bagged good hits in Telugu cinema. But audiences are of an opinion that you didn’t get the stardom that you deserve.

I don’t think anything about it. I can’t control people’s thoughts. I will think about it. And there are parts where I could have improved which I think I am improving.
