Delimitation 2029: TDP Gains Upper Hand, Jagan Faces Setback
It is now official: the Central Government has decided to increase the number of Assembly and Parliament seats across India ahead of the 2029 elections.
The Lok Sabha seats will rise from 543 to 816, while Assembly seats will increase from 4,123 to 6,185.
In Andhra Pradesh, the Assembly seats will go up from 175 to 263, and Lok Sabha seats from 25 to 38. In Telangana, Assembly seats will rise from 119 to 179, and Parliament seats from 17 to 26. This process of increasing seats and redrawing boundaries is known as Delimitation, with the last exercise carried out in 2008.
Back then, senior Congress leader Gade Venkat Reddy, as Chairman of the Delimitation Committee, reorganized constituencies in a way that fragmented many TDP strongholds while consolidating Congress strongholds. This helped YSR Congress emerge stronger in later elections.
Now, after many years, Chandrababu Naidu has the opportunity to oversee the delimitation process. With a favorable Central Government in place, TDP can strategically redraw boundaries, potentially weakening previous Congress strongholds. Meanwhile, Janasena and BJP are expected to grow ambitious ahead of 2029, likely demanding more seats. YSR Congress may benefit indirectly if these parties compete against each other, even if it means they gain extra seats but lose the overall advantage.
Importantly, the increase in seats also gives TDP flexibility to allocate more constituencies to allies without jeopardizing their chances of winning.
