Boris Johnson urges ‘heavy dose of caution’ as lockdown eases in UK

Share

LONON: Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday urged people to move to the next stage of considerable easing of lockdown restrictions that allows greater indoor interactions with a “heavy dose of caution”, as the UK continues to monitor rapidly rising cases of the B1.617.2 variant of COVID-19 first identified in India.

In what is step three of a four-step roadmap set by Johnson for easing the legally-binding lockdown restrictions, the hospitality sector including pubs, restaurants and cinemas and most businesses can resume close to normal service in England, Wales and most of Scotland.

However, surge testing and an accelerated vaccination programme is being implemented as the threat from the variant first found in India looms over the reopening, with UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock warning over the weekend that the B1.617.

2 variant of concern (VOC) seems to “spread like wildfire” among those who have not been vaccinated. “Together we have reached another milestone in our road map out of lockdown, but we must take this next step with a heavy dose of caution,” said Boris Johnson.

“Everyone must play their part by getting tested twice a week, coming forward for your vaccine when called, and remembering hands, face, space and fresh air. I urge everyone to be cautious and take responsibility when enjoying new freedoms today in order to keep the virus at bay,” he said.

The latest easing of lockdown, described by scientists as a very finely balanced political decision amid low overall coronavirus infection rates but the doubling of the case numbers of the B1.617.2 VOC to over 1,300 in a week, comes as the National Health Service (NHS) hit another milestone in the vaccination programme.

Experts believe the variant, which is very highly transmissible, does spread more easily but early data suggests that vaccines still work against it.

According to the latest NHS data, more than 20 million UK adults have received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine even as the remaining over-50s and vulnerable groups will be given their second jabs ahead of the 12-week timeline at eight weeks.

“The latest real-world data has once again demonstrated how effective the vaccine is at providing life-saving protection, with two doses of the Pfizer vaccine providing 97 per cent protection against mortality,” said Matt Hancock.

“Receiving a second dose is vital to ensure you have the ultimate protection from this deadly virus, I encourage everyone to book their jab as soon as they are offered it,” he said.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said that latest data from Public Health England’s (PHE) real-world study shows the vaccines have reduced hospitalisations and deaths, saving more than 11,700 lives and preventing 33,000 hospitalisations in England by the end of April.

It confirms that vaccinated people are far less likely to get COVID-19 with symptoms and are even more unlikely to get serious COVID-19, to be admitted to hospital, or to die from it and there is growing evidence that vaccinated people are less likely to pass the virus to others.

The DHSC said the focus is now on tackling the rising cases of the B1.617.2 VOC first identified in India, as well as strengthened surge testing, genome sequencing and enhanced contact tracing measures deployed across the north west of England to control the spread.

Ministers are hoping surge testing and the acceleration of second vaccine doses can help combat the spike in the B1.617.2 VOC in parts of the country, with the Army assisting certain areas with the surge testing programme.

Meanwhile, the UK reported four coronavirus-related deaths and 1,926 new cases over Sunday, compared with seven deaths and 2,027 cases announced on Saturday.

Prisons push Thailand’s COVID-19 cases to new daily high

BANKOK: Prisons push Thailand’s COVID-19 cases to new daily high Health authorities in Thailand reported 9,635 new coronavirus cases on Monday, doubling the previous daily record set last week.

Over 70 per cent of Monday’s increase — 6,853 cases — came from prisons. Thailand’s confirmed case total rose to 111,082, of which almost three-quarters — 82,219 __ have been recorded since the beginning of April this year, when a new wave of coronavirus infections began.

Twenty-five deaths were reported Monday, bringing total fatalities to 614. Thailand had about 7,100 cases including 63 deaths in all of last year, in what was regarded as a success story in containing the virus.

The capital, Bangkok, accounted for 1,843 of Monday’s new cases, with no signs of decline, said Taweesilp Visanuyotin, spokesperson for the government’s Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration.

He said half of the city’s 50 districts have high rates of infection. Despite no downturn in infections, restaurants in Bangkok and neighboring provinces were allowed on Monday to resume indoor dining until 9 pm, with seating limited to 25 per cent of capacity.

Since May 1 they had only been allowed to provide takeout service. Bangkok officials said closures would be extended for two more weeks for schools, entertainment venues, cinemas, fitness clubs and sports arenas.

The current wave was traced to nightspots in popular Bangkok entertainment districts. But 28 virus clusters have now been identified across 19 districts, including markets, slums, low-income housing and construction sites.

The Corrections Department announced that in the first half of this month, it conducted COVID-19 tests on 24,357 inmates in eight prisons, five of them in Bangkok, and about half tested positive.

Etela’s absence felt in health department

Murmers have begun in Telangana over the way the medical and health services ministry is functioning. Questions are being raised over the way the medical services are functioning in the state in times of Corona crisis.

While Etela Rajender was the minister for health, he not only held regular reviews with the medical officials, he used to regularly visit several hospitals to see how the systems were functioning. On several occasions, he had even interacted with the patients either directly or through video conferencing. Soon after finding lacunae in the system, he used to escalate the issue with the officials and get the loose ends tightened. However, with Etela gone, the Corona control has been taken over by KCR, KTR and Harish Rao. All the three are conducting reviews, but have not visited the hospitals and inspected the facilities. Also, the reviews are becoming one too many with lot of overlapping.

Etela used to interact with the media on a regular basis. He also used the media as an effective tool of messaging for the public. Though three ministers are taking care of the health ministry, the vigour and vitality seen during Etela’s time is clearly missing, say political analysts.

Samsung Galaxy A22 5G launch can be expected soon as the phone received certification from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) on Monday. The smartphone has so far been a part of the rumour mill and is speculated to come in 4G and 5G models. Both models are expected to have a similar list of specifications, though with distinct chipsets to offer different network capabilities. The Samsung Galaxy A22 is rumoured to have a waterdrop-style display notch and a triple rear camera setup. Samsung is also expected to use the same design language that it offered with the Galaxy A32 and the Galaxy A52 recently.

The listing, which was initially reported by tipster Mukul Sharma, also suggests support for Bluetooth v5.0 with the Galaxy A22 5G. The listing does not provide any further details about the smartphone.

Nevertheless, some renders allegedly related to the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G surfaced online recently, suggesting that its design could be very similar to what we have seen on the Galaxy A32. The leaked renders also suggested that the new Samsung phone could come in Black, Green, Purple, and White colours.
