Oman has extended the validity of its residence cards from three years to 10 years, according to media reports citing the Royal Oman Police. The reform, issued under Decision 157/2025, updates key provisions of the Executive Regulations of the Civil Status Law.

Under the new rules, residency must be renewed within 30 days of card issuance to maintain valid status. The extended validity applies only to specific categories defined by the Director General. Fees have been standardised at 5 Omani riyals per year for residency cards, while replacement cards will cost 20 riyals.

The changes aim to simplify compliance for foreign residents, reduce administrative burdens, and provide greater long-term stability for skilled professionals and their families. Officials note that the reforms support Oman’s wider economic strategy to attract global talent and strengthen its position as a regional business hub.

In parallel, Oman has introduced a visa amnesty scheme valid until December 31, 2025. The initiative allows foreign nationals with expired visas or residence permits to regularise their status without penalties. Those renewing permits or transferring employment will be exempt from fines once their status is corrected by the Ministry of Labour. Individuals leaving Oman permanently will also have fines waived for non-work-related visas.

These measures collectively reinforce Oman’s commitment to fostering a more flexible and supportive environment for foreign workers and investors.

Mexico has officially announced major updates to its Ley Federal de Derechos (Federal Fees Law), introducing substantial increases to immigration-related fees starting January 1, 2026. The revised fees, published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación and reported by El Expat Insider Mexico, will affect a wide range of procedures overseen by the National Migration Institute (INM).

Among the most notable adjustments are steep hikes in the temporary and permanent residency categories, with increases exceeding 100% across multiple durations. For example, the fee for a one-year Temporary Resident permit will more than double from $5,328 MXN in 2025 to $11,140.74 MXN in 2026. Permanent residency applications will also see a comparable rise, increasing from $6,494 MXN to $13,578.96 MXN. Visitor permits without work authorization will experience a smaller but still significant increase of nearly 20%.

These changes form part of broader fee adjustments across government services and are aimed at aligning immigration fees with updated cost structures and inflation trends for 2026.

The revised fees will apply to all applications submitted on or after January 1, 2026, irrespective of when the supporting documentation was prepared. Notably, the government will offer a 50% fee reduction for select temporary and permanent residency applicants who meet specific criteria under the 2026 reform. Details on eligibility and documentation requirements for this reduction have yet to be released, with further guidance expected from the INM in the coming months.

Kaantha: Strong Acting, Weak Narrative

After the critically acclaimed Lucky Bhasker, Dulquer Salmaan is back with Kaantha, a Tamil-Telugu period drama produced and acted in by Rana Daggubati. Bhagyashri Borse, looking for a breakthrough after two unsuccessful films, makes her mark here. But does Kaantha hit the right notes?

Story:
Kaantha explores the clash of egos between legendary director Ayya (Samuthirakani) and his protégé TK Mahendran (Dulquer Salmaan). Trouble begins when Mahendran renames a female-centric film, Shaantha, to Kaantha and changes the climax, sparking a bitter rivalry. At the center is debutante Kumari (Bhagyashri Borse), torn between respect for the director and love for the actor. The tension escalates when a real bullet is fired on the set—raising questions of murder and justice. The answers unfold in the film’s climax.

Technical Highlights:
Dani Sanchez Lopez’s cinematography is a visual treat, transporting viewers to a bygone era and the chaotic world of filmmaking. His use of colors and aspect ratios is exceptional. Llewellyn Anthony and Gonsalvez’s editing has a documentary-like feel, particularly in the first 20–25 minutes where flashbacks, real-life sequences, and movie scenes blend smoothly.

Spirit Media and Wayfarer Films ensure high production value, but Jhanu Chanthat’s songs fall flat, lacking emotional resonance. James Bejoy’s background score, however, complements the narrative well. Director Selvamani Selvaraj ambitiously fuses two genres in his debut, but the sluggish screenplay prevents the film from achieving its full potential.

Performances:
Dulquer Salmaan is effortlessly convincing as TK Mahendran, from his expressions and style to his commanding presence. The climax showcases his acting at its peak. Bhagyashri Borse impresses with a confident debut, fully utilizing her role. Rana Daggubati is entertaining as Phoenix, though his character feels tangential to the plot. Samuthirakani excels as Ayya, delivering gripping ego battle scenes with Dulquer.
