Arrest of FB activist: Did TDP leaders forget past?

Share

Since Tuesday morning, Telugu Desam Party leaders have been crying foul over the arrest of a 66-year old woman by the Guntur police for posting alleged objectionable comments against YSR Congress government in connection with the LG Polymers plant gas leakage incident on May 7.

The CID authorities arrested Poonthota Ranganayaki under Section 41-A of the Criminal Procedure Code and registered criminal cases against her under various sections of the IPC. She was later released on bail.

The police said if she was proved guilty, she could face three years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5 lakh as first offence.

The police had charged her with indulging in false propaganda against the Jagan government with regard to a sensitive issue like gas leak from LG Polymers, thereby creating panic among the people and provoking mistrust against the government.

While the arrest of Ranganayaki may not be justified by the police because she had not made any personal allegations against anybody, including the chief minister but only expressed her doubts over the gas leakage incident, the way the TDP leaders have jumped to her defence and started attacking the government surprised everybody.

TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu virtually launched a campaign in the social media with a hashtag #SupportRanganayakiMadam.

“Power is blinding the CM and his ability to take criticism. One day fate will turn its back and all this arrogance will come crashing down,” he tweeted.

TDP leader Devineni Umamaheshwara Rao said if posting a comment against the government was a crime, one wonders how many cases should have been filed against YSR Congress leaders for posting objectionable comments against the previous TDP government.

But the TDP leaders appeared to have forgotten the fact that several YSRC social media activists were intimidated and arrested during the Naidu regime for criticising the then TDP government.

“At least in the present case, the police have done it openly. But during the Naidu regime, several YSRC workers were arrested and beaten up in the police station without even filing cases,” a YSRC leader alleged.

Boycott Google, Facebook to force them to pay for news, says Australian watchdog

Share

Sydney: Australia’s competition watchdog suggested Tuesday that local media could organise a “collective boycott” of Google and Facebook to force the tech giants to pay for news they put on their platforms.

The radical idea was among a series of possible bargaining tools put forward by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) as it considers a mandatory code of conduct for the tech firms.

Other mechanisms laid out in a 33-page “Concepts Paper” included bilateral negotiations between Australian media organisations and the two tech behemoths and collective bargaining involving all the country’s news companies.

But acknowledging the global reach and immense power of Google and Facebook, it said an “alternative bargaining framework” could be needed if direct negotiations fail.

“A collective boycott, or the threat of a collective boycott, may encourage each of Google and Facebook to offer news media businesses more appropriate remuneration for the use of their content,” it said.

In a process being closely watched across the world, Australia last month announced plans to force major internet firms to share advertising revenues earned from news content featured in their services.

While the initial targets of the anti-trust move involved a range of tech firms, including Twitter and Verizon Media, the ACCC said Tuesday it was narrowing its focus to Google and Facebook.

“Facebook and Google were the digital platforms currently benefitting from a significant imbalance in bargaining power in their commercial negotiations with Australian news media businesses,” it said.

The ACCC is tasked with drawing up a “code of conduct” for payments and addressing other competition concerns with the tech titans.

Its concept paper posed a series of questions about what kind of news should be compensated and how best to determine its value, and gave stakeholders until June 5 to submit recommendations.

The ACCC then has until the end of July to draw up the final code, which the government has said it will quickly implement.

Industry struggling

Last week the head of Nine Entertainment, one of Australia’s biggest media companies, called for Google and Facebook to pay news organisations 10 percent of their annual Australian advertising revenue, which is estimated by the government at Aus$6.0 billion (US$3.9 billion).

Other industry leaders have suggested payments of up to Aus$1.0 billion per year.

Google and Facebook vehemently oppose any mandatory fees and insist they have invested millions of dollars in initiatives helping Australia’s struggling news industry.

The two firms have had a huge impact on media companies across the globe as they capture the lion’s share of online advertising spending.

In response to falling revenues, Australian news outlets have slashed 20 percent of jobs in the last six years.

The crisis has only deepened in the economic and advertising downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which has already forced the closure of many smaller news publishers.

An estimated 17 million Australians use Facebook each month and spend an average of 30 minutes on the platform a day, while 98 percent of Australian mobile searches use Google.

KCR Rejects What Jagan Accepts!

Share

It has now been quite evident that Telangana Rashtra Samithi president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has decided to take the Narendra Modi government head on, which was evident from the way he had rejected the Rs 20 lakh crore stimulus package announced by the Centre, describing it as bogus, hollow and jugglery of figures.

Surprisingly, his Andhra Pradesh counterpart and YSR Congress party president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy took a completely different stand.

While welcoming the package, Jagan appointed a committee to study the ways to utilise the benefits to be accrued to the state from the package.

The committee, to be headed by chief secretary Neelam Sawhney, has several senior officials of the key departments, besides Jagan’s close aides – V Vijay Sai Reddy, P Mithun Reddy and Anantapur MP Talari Rangaiah.

The committee will work out a plan and prepare guidelines for the effective utilisation of the package.

“We need to take steps for the effective implementation of the package. All the departments concerned should come out with action plans to utilise the benefits of the package,” the chief secretary said.

It may be mentioned that KCR made some strong comments against the Centre, alleging that the Modi government was treating the states like beggars. It was unfortunate that the Centre had tried to rule over the states taking advantage of the financial crisis in the states.

He said the Central package clearly showed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s talk of cooperative federalism was just bogus.

“We are also constitutionally elected governments and not subordinates of the Centre. By offering such a package, the Modi government has lost its image in the eyes of the people,” he said.

Shoot plans changed for Prabhas 20 & Pushpa

Corona virus has affected all our lives in one way or the other. It has particularly hit hard some of the industries and movie industry is one among them. Government is considering entertainment as least preferred sector in this pandemic situation and rightly so. In lock down 4.0, government of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh has given more relaxations but there is no respite for film industry. However with things getting relaxed a bit, there is hope that shootings will be permitted in a month or so.

Though shootings will be allowed, all will not be the same. Still film makers are unclear about shootings in overseas. There are many films currently in production which have scheduled their shoots in foreign. Post pandemic, things will not be easy to shoot in foreign locations. So our makers are planning for alternatives.

Prabhas’s O Dear in the direction of Radha Krishna Kumar has to shoot majorly in foreign. Before pandemic, they have completed Georgia schedule and they have to continue foreign shoot as it is extremely necessary for their script. With the current situation, the team has planned to complete indoor schedules with erected sets in Hyderabad and chalk out plans according to the situation then.

It will be the same for Allu Arjun’s Pushpa which was scheduled for foreign locale shooting. Now makers have decided to shoot in Vikarabad, Chittoor forests. If possible, they will shoot in Kerala too. Films like Mosagallu, Love Story, Solo Bratuke So Better are also changing their shoot locations. It will all be local in the coming days.

Setback To LG Polymers In Supreme Court

LG Polymers India Ltd from whose plant at Visakhapatnam, there was a leakage of Styrene gas on May 7, resulting in the death of 12 persons and hospitalisation of over 500 people faced a big setback in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The apex court rejected the petition of the company seeking a stay on the orders of National Green Tribunal for an investigation into the gas leakage incident. The arguments in the case were posted to June 8.

The LG Polymers argued that the NGT had no jurisdiction to probe into the accident. It said the NGT cannot take up a suo motu inquiry into the incident. However, the Supreme Court rejected this argument.

It said the apex court would take up the hearing only after the completion of NGT inquiry. It also ruled that all legal issues could be raised only before the NGT.

“Any objections from the company should be raised only before the NGT,” the Supreme Court ruled.

It may be mentioned that the LG Polymers’ lawyers challenged the directions of the NGT and Andhra Pradesh state high court in the Supreme Court.

The company challenged the high court’s direction to deposit Rs 50 crore till the investigation into the gas leakage incident was completed.

Bois locker room: HC asks Google, Facebook, Twitter whether content can be removed

Share

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court Tuesday sought response of the Centre on a plea seeking directions to it to ensure social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram remove illegal groups such as ‘Bois Locker Room’, “for the safety and security of children” in cyberspace.

A bench of Justices Rajiv Sahai Endlaw and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal issued notice to the ministries of home affairs, Information Technology and finance as also Facebook, Google and Twitter asking them to indicate their stand on affidavit by the next date of hearing on July 14.

The order came on the application moved by former RSS ideologue K N Govindacharya “highlighting the unlawful nature of illegal groups” like ‘Bois Locker Room’.

“Due to the negativity, fake news and illegal content many young lives are destroyed. Such groups are criminal in nature and do not deserve any protection of free or creative speech,” said the petition filed through advocate Virag Gupta.

It further contended that “the incident of ‘bois locker room’ on Instagram shows one of the vilest forms of social media”.

Central government standing counsel Anurag Ahluwalia accepted notice on behalf of the ministries.
