Huge blow for China! India to emerge as Super Power because of COVID-19?

Share

No one would have thought that an invisible micro-organism shakes the entire world and collapses the economy of the world countries. But it has happened and due to this deadly COVID-19 attack and even a Super Power like America couldn’t avoid this damage.

On the other side, majority of the people think that China, being the homeland for this virus outbreak betrayed the entire world with this COVID-19 pandemic. So, many big companies want to shift their base from that country at this crucial juncture. Earlier, Trump clarified that many big American Companies are returning to their country and are leaving China.

Most recently, the mobile manufacturing company LAVA made its way out of China and is planning to establish their base in India with an investment of Rs.800 crores. This will happen in the coming five years. With this encouragement, the Indian government is urging the state governments to facilitate the multinational companies that are leaving China by providing them the required lands to establish their base.

For many companies, India is being considered as the only reliable option after they leave China. Already many companies have announced that the products they manufacture in India will be exported to China and the Indian government is looking to give tax relaxations for about 10 years for the companies which would establish their base in the sub-continent.

So, India may emerge as a superpower in the upcoming years due to this COVID-19 effect and all we need is to take care of the economy before this lockdown comes to an end and manage its after-effects efficiently. Let’s see how it goes.

Pic Talk: Deepika & Aamir Khan On January 1st, 2000

Share

The throwbacks are always interesting and if they are to decades back, they are not to be missed. Superstar actress Deepika Padukone brings back a picture from her memory lane, that has Aamir Khan with Padukone family on January 1st, 2000.

Deepika Padukone shared a picture of her when she was 13 years old in 2000 at Bollywood’s biggest star Aamir Khan’s house then. Deepika funnily admits she looked awkward and also revealed that Aamir Khan was having lunch, precisely curd rice which he did not offer and always hungry Deepika did not ask for.

That’s an interesting throwback of Deepika Padukone with family. Aamir Khan too looked as smart as ever, probably between Mann, Mela, Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai times. Wait, What? Curd rice for lunch on the first day of a new year? Well, that’s Aamir Khan.

Physical distancing: A possible or impossible concept?

Share

The COVID-19 has made many lives vulnerable. As this is a with standing and a prolonged effect, the suffering is also long-lasting. Mainly, the entertainment industry has taken a huge hit as the demand for the OTT platforms in increasing day by day. Many small and medium movie producers are getting attracted to lucrative deals made by many platforms.

In the meanwhile, the multiplex chains, and exhibitors association started to act before the situation goes out of hand and requested the government to run the theatres with 50% attendance. They say that the tickets will be sold with one-seat-gap for every audience and they won’t allow a family to watch a movie without physical distance.

Adding that they will maintain social distance norms at bathrooms and cafeteria, the exhibitors’ associates asked the government to permit them to run the shows. Practically it is a far fetched shot. In a closed space, that too with Air Condition being run, the virus will spread easily and no physical distance measure can prevent it.

Coming to the Physical distancing at cafeterias and bathrooms, it is a great challenge for the theatre staff and the people wouldn’t oblige and follow these norms convincingly. Already the Telangana government made it clear that no theaters will be permitted to run for al least three months from now. Let’s see what other governments say.

Nag Asks Opinion On Allowing Alcohol In Theaters!

Share

No doubt, the ‘theatre business’ is going to be something different than before. After the lockdown, the footfalls will be quite low owing to the fears of the people and even the government may not allow them to function like earlier. With Covid-19 enforced lockdown on one side and OTT platforms grabbing content on other side, what should theatres do to attract more people in the near future?

Director Nag Ashwin of Mahanati fame, who is going to director #Prabhas21 has revealed that he has a similar conversation with producer Suresh Babu. As Suresh owns nearly 500 theatres, most of them under the lease, he’s said to be little worried about the future of theatres. They thought that introducing alcohol at theatres will be a key to attract more audiences and Nag Ashwin is expecting people’s opinion on this.

No doubt, most of them said no, because serving alcohol at theatres will put an end to the family audiences coming to theatres. At the same time those who have over drunk might not be able to leave theatres on time and unwanted ruckus is bound to happen like at those bars in Krishna Nagar and Ameerpet.

Some felt that reducing the price of popcorn and allowing people to bring their own water bottles, food and cold beverages might help very well. Maybe Suresh Babu should think about this or Nag Ashwin should give him this advice.

Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli has heaped praise on his darling wife Anushka Sharma who had bankrolled the web-series ‘Paatal Lok.’ He shared his first review on this web series. This web-series has started streaming on Amazon Prime from May 15th and Kohli took time to watch it.

Seems like ‘Paatal Lok’ has impressed Kohli and he could not contain his excitement in complimenting his wife. “Having watched the whole season of PAATAL LOK a while ago, I knew it’s a masterpiece of storytelling, screenplay and tremendous acting. Proud of my love @AnushkaSharma for producing such a gripping series and believing in her team along with our bhaiji #KarneshSharma,” tweeted Kohli.

Generally Kohli’s cricketing schedule is busy throughout the year and he is making the most of the lockdown being at home. Also this is not for the first time that Kohli showered compliments on Anushka.

Post marriage, Anushka’s first release was ‘Pari’ and she was also the producer of the film. Both Kohli and Anushka watched the film in special screening and then the Indian skipper reviewed that the film was outstanding.

Game Of Politics On Land To Poor

Share

The YSRC government suffered a setback in its decision to allocate house sites to the poor in the capital region of Amaravati. The High Court suspended the government’s orders changing the Capital master plan with regard to house construction zone (R5 zone) for four weeks. The next hearing is slated for June 17. The petitioner argued that collecting public opinion was compulsory to change the master plan, stressing that local bodies and village committees should be consulted in this regard.

Pedalandriki Illu

The YSRC government decided to distribute house sites to 26 lakh poor on March 25 in a big way, under ‘Pedalandriki Illu’ (houses to all the poor), one of the nine schemes under the prestigious Navaratnalu to which the YSRC government give utmost importsnce. However, the Covid-19 lockdown played spoilsport.

To make the scheme a reality, Jagan identified land pockets at various places in the state.

In Amaravati, Jagan decided to distribute 967.25 acres of land in the limits of Krishnayapalem, Venkatapalem, Nidamarru, Kuragallu, Mandadam, Inavolu villages, to the poor. To enable the distribution of land to the poor, he even decided to merge over 28 villages in the Capital region with the nearby urban local bodies and even made the higher officials request the State Election Commission not to conduct election in these hamlets. This way he wanted to separate the villages from the core capital region.

Soon as this news spread, YSRC detractors had said that excluding the 28 villages from the election process was an idea to avoid YSRC’s rout in the capital region as the farmers were up in arms against the state government for trying to trifurcate the capital and remove the sheen of Aamravati.

To assert his decision, Jagan further issued orders regarding the R5 zone which was suspended by the AP High Court on Friday.

More legal hassles

With regard to the same scheme of distribution of house sites to the poor, mangroves in nearly 100 acres in port land at Kakinada was cleared which also drew criticism from the environmentalists and opposition parties, and the matter is still pending in the court.

In Visakhapatnam, the YSRC government chalked out a different plan to acquire land for the same scheme. It took away assigned lands from some and when they moved the court on the same, the judge asked AP government of what justice it was doing to the people by taking away land from one section of the poor and promising to give it to another section of the poor.

Trifurcation of Capital

When the previous Telugu Desam government zeroed in on Amaravati as the capital region, between Vijayawada and Guntur, the Capital master plan included four zones, namely R1 –village planning zone, R2- low density zone, R3- medium to high density zone and R4- high density zone.

After the YSRC was voted to power in 2019, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy decided to trifurcate the capital and relocate the administrative capital to Visakhapatnam, citing that building the capital in Amaravati is wrought with heavy expenditure of Rs 1 lakh crore which the state government cannot afford.

At the same time, he said that building the Capital in Visakhapatnam is much cheaper as it is already a developed city and would also be ready to compete with other major cities in the south like Hyderabad and Bengaluru, very soon. He also announced that the legislative capital would remain in Amaravati but that the judiciary capital would be shifted to Kurnool. By doing so, the YSRC government said development could be evenly distributed in the state. He faulted TD supremo
and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for doing the same mistake of focusing only on one city by picking Amaravati, like in the united Andhra Pradesh, which was likely to trigger regional differences.

Bitter Rivalry

Though Jagan cited many reasons and even supported his argument with some figures, political analysts sensed that it was the bitter rivalry between the TDP and YSRC that prompted Jagan to take such a drastic decision as the 33,000 acres acquired for building the capital, through land pooling, a massive exercise completed by the TDP government, would then mean a waste.

The analysts in political circles reminded that since the day Jagan assumed power, he had been reversing all the key decisions taken by the previous TDP government and that it points only to their animosity. The decision on the capital was also taken as part of rivlary, they said.

One other crucial thing Jagan announced right after assuming power was the utmost priority to be given to Navaratnalu and the launch of the same, which, he said, would better the life of the poor and downtrodden.

Mockery of Land Pooling Scheme

Now, coming to back to the capital issue, Jagan and his ministers are determined to remove the capital from Amaravati and ensure that it remains a ghost city by even ruining the land.

To achieve this, the YSRC government even decided to do away with the land pooled by the farmers. Accordingly, Jagan announced that he would give back the 33,000 acres to farmers who wanted to take it and also distribute more than 900 acres to the poor, as part of one of the schemes under Navaratnalu.

This decision raised the shackles of the farmers and they geared up to challenge it in the court. When the farmers expressed their objection, Jagan pointed to the clause in the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) which mentioned that some portion of the CRDA land would be distributed to the poor after development of the capital.

While Jagan tried to exploit this clause, the farmers too are fighting the legal battle basing on this same point.

Jagan seems to be stubborn in shattering the dream of world-class Amaravati which was planned by the TDP. He even set the time to shift the Secretariat to Vizag in May but his plans went for a toss due to the Covid-19.

COVID-19: WH official favours giving tax incentives to companies to move to US from China

Share

WASHINGTON: A top economic advisor to US President Donald Trump on Friday favoured giving tax incentives to American companies to move their economic base from China to America, amidst a new rift in the bilateral relationship over Beijing’s handling of the coronavirus crisis.

The US has expressed disappointment over China’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic which has claimed 87,530 lives in America.

China has also been accused of stealing Intellectual Property and research work.

The US and China in the beginning of the year signed Phase-1 of a trade deal, ending a bitter two-year tariff war that had rattled the global economy.

“It’s not a policy yet, but we want to make America the most attractive place to do work,” White House National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow told reporters on Friday, amidst reports that a number of companies are looking to move their manufacturing base out of China.

“I’m a believer in rewarding not punishing, so my thought is in addition to the full expensing 100 per cent capital expensing why not provide a 50 per cent discount for the corporate tax rate if you are moving from outside the US to the US,” he said.

Kudlow suggested reducing the corporate tax from the present 21 per cent to 10.5 per cent.

“Why not try for a couple of years or longer a 10.5 per cent rate which would make us extremely competitive and hospitable to new investments here or for moving expenses not only 100 per cent full expensing but also we may add some assistance,” Kudlow said.

“That’s another thought to help them come here. In other words, I want to reward not punish. Those are options. Those are options.

“Again this is pre-decisional; these are just things that we are looking at internally,” he said.

On Thursday, a top US senator unveiled an 18-point plan, including enhancing military ties with India, to hold the Chinese government accountable for its “lies, deception, and cover-ups” that led to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

President Trump has been pressing China to agree for an inquiry into the origin of the virus, including the allegation that it emerged from a bio-lab in Wuhan.

He has threatened to cut off “the whole relationship” China.

China has denied America’s accusation of covering up the extent of its coronavirus outbreak and accused the US of attempting to divert the public attention by insinuating that the virus originated from a virology laboratory in Wuhan.

“China was the first country to report the COVID-19 to the World Health Organisation (WHO), (and) that doesn’t mean the virus originated from Wuhan.

“There has never been any concealment, and we’ll never allow any concealment,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said last month.

“A discerning person will understand at a glance that the purpose is to create confusion, divert public attention, and shirk their responsibility,” he said.

The novel coronavirus which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan last year has claimed 307,666 lives and infected more than 4.5 million people globally, according to Johns Hopkins university data.

The US is the worst affected country with 87,530 deaths and over 1.4 million infections reported so far.

Naidu To Hold ‘Zoom Mahanadu’

Share

It is not just the first anniversary celebrations of the YSR Congress party government in Andhra Pradesh.

It is also the time for the biennial “Mahanadu” of the opposition Telugu Desam Party headed by N Chandrababu Naidu.

The TDP celebrates the party’s biggest conclave once in two years. In the three-day Mahanadu held from May 27 to 29, the party adopts several resolutions to be followed in the next two years apart from electing party president, politburo and various committees of the party.

Naidu had held the last Mahanadu in a big way at Siddhartha Engineering College premises in Vijayawada in 2018.

But by next May, he had lost power miserably to YSR Congress party. Though a “Mini Mahanadu” is held every year, the TDP chief did not hold it in May last because he had just lost power.

This time, the party is supposed to hold its biennial Mahanadu in a big way for three days, but because of Coronavirus pandemic and lockdown restrictions, Naidu is not a position to hold it.

In fact, he thought he would galvanise the party cadre which was demoralised due to loss of power last year. It would have given some boost to the party to sustain its fight for the next four years.

However, the Coronavirus has dampened the party’s spirit. Yet, Naidu wants to hold Mahanadu at least for record sake through Zoom Teleconference method. It is learnt he is planning to hold “Zoom Mahanadu” with 10,000 party workers.

A decision would be taken after discussing with the party seniors on the possibility of holding such online conference.

Naidu has been stuck up in Hyderabad due to lockdown and he is addressing his party workers and holding meetings with party workers only through Zoom Application. He even addressed press conferences through this technology.

It remains to been how the TDP chief will hold Mahanadu using Zoom app this time.

COVID19: OCI card holders vent frustration against travel restrictions imposed by Indian government

Share

WASHINGTON: Indian-Americans holding OCI cards, mostly their parents, have voiced frustration over the Indian government’s recent decision to temporarily put in abeyance their long term visa amidst the coronavirus-linked global travel restrictions.

The OCI (Overseas Citizens of India) card is issued to the people of Indian-origin, allowing them a visa-free travel in most of the cases.

It also gives them certain privileges like that of an Indian citizen except for buying agricultural land, voting, running for election and working in government.

Of all the countries, the Indian diplomatic missions in the US issues the largest number of OCI cards.

For instance, in 2019, Indian diplomatic missions in the US issued 90,000 OCI cards.

Globally there are six million OCI card holders.

According to the regulations issued by the Indian government last month and updated last week, visas of foreign nationals and OCI cards, that provide visa-free travel privileges to the people of Indian-origin, have been suspended as part of the new international travel restrictions following the COVID-19 pandemic.

In many cases, in particular, the minors having OCI cards is creating a difficult situation for their parents who are still Indian citizens.

“Please allow Infants (with OCI cards) to travel with their parents (INDIANS) to India from the USA.

“Indian parents’ visas in the USA are going to expire, but due to the kid’s USA citizenship with OCI card we are not able to utilise flights scheduled by the government of India. Kindly allow minors to travel,” one Fazale Sattar wrote on Twitter.

Anitha Vankayala said that her daughter with an OCI card is waiting to come back home.

“We never thought this kind of discrimination from government because of our OCI status. Please help us to get back our daughter,” she said.

“Modiji, this is definitely not what we looked at when we came back to your call of Reversal of brain drain. We loved your spirits and came back 9yrs ago. Please treat OCI’s with aadhar card same as Indians,” T R Sreelakshmi tweeted.

“Many OCI holders, all over the world are having a tough time. Forced to close their restaurants & other business. Economic loss is huge,” wrote Constant Gardner.

“Please help our kids who are OCI card holders and stranded as students in the UK, US,” tweeted Madhavi Srihari.

“For no fault of mine I am stuck outside the country separated from my family for two months now- is there any sense in this madness? What exactly will you achieve by banning OCI card holders from entering India? Absolutely barn door ridiculous,” rued Binayak Chanda on twitter.

Preethi Gorjala sought help for her son.

“Please Help. My son, an OCI card holder who grew up in India and presently studying in the US is stranded and not able to get back home due to the ban. Please allow OCI card holders also to get back home,” she pleaded.

Ravi Puvvala said that he is an OCI card holder and currently stuck in Paris on the employment front and waiting to travel India in priority.

“I am desperate to join my family (newborn) in India, They are struggling back home in India without me in this pandemic situation,” he said.

However, Indian American activist Sunanda Vashisht defended the Indian government.

“OCI card holders are not Indian citizens. They are of Indian-origin and OCI is a long term visa. GOI is rightly prioritising Indian citizens.

“If there are few urgent cases, embassies can look into that but OCI card holders en masse cannot and must not be included in evacuations,” she said on Twitter.

“Sir we are residents of India with Indian passports please help us get back our stranded son in America who holds an OCI card,” pleaded Srithi Reddy.

One Simpi argued on Twitter that OCI is permanent residency.

“No country has betrayed its permanent resident. Not even Indians who have Permanent residency of the USA (Green Card). We are only being made fools by our own Indian govt,” she said.

Balakrishnan Shanmugam said that current restrictions for OCI card holders to travel to India is impacting parents whose kids are OCI card holders.

Mahendran Mahesh wrote on twitter that his wife and six months old baby are stuck in Chennai.
