New York Governor Andrew Cuomo criticised over highest nursing home death toll

Share

NEW YORK: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has won bipartisan praise for rallying supplies for his ravaged hospitals and helping slow the coronavirus, is coming under increasing criticism for not bringing that same level of commitment to a problem that has so far stymied him: nursing homes.

In part-lecture, part-cheerleading briefings that have made him a Democratic counter to President Donald Trump, Cuomo has often seemed dismissive and resigned to defeat when asked about his state leading the nation in nursing home deaths.

“We’ve tried everything to keep it out of a nursing home, but it’s virtually impossible,” Cuomo told reporters. “Now is not the best time to put your mother in a nursing home. That is a fact.”

Residents’ relatives, health care watchdogs and lawmakers from both parties cite problems with testing and transparency that have prevented officials — and the public — from grasping the full scale of the catastrophe.

And they are second-guessing a state directive that requires nursing homes take on new patients infected with COVID-19 — an order they say accelerated outbreaks in facilities that are prime breeding grounds for infectious diseases.

“The way this has been handled by the state is totally irresponsible, negligent and stupid,” said Elaine Mazzotta, a nurse whose mother died last month of suspected COVID-19 at a Long Island nursing home. “They knew better. They shouldn’t have sent these people into nursing homes.”

Of the nation’s more than 26,000 coronavirus deaths in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, a fifth of them — about 5,300 — are in New York, according to a count by The Associated Press, and the toll has been increasing by an average of 20 to 25 deaths a day for the past few weeks.

“The numbers, the deaths keep ticking up,” said MaryDel Wypych, an advocate for older adults in the Rochester area. “It’s just very frustrating.”

Cuomo faced criticism at a recent briefing for saying that providing masks and gowns to nursing homes is “not our job” because the homes are privately owned.

“It was such an insensitive thing to say,” said state Assemblyman Ron Kim, a Queens Democrat who noted that it wasn’t until just this past week that New York and neighboring states announced a plan to combine forces to buy protective gear and medical supplies for nursing homes.

“If we had focused on that early on,” he said, “we could have saved a lot of lives.”

Cuomo’s administration defended its response to the crisis, saying it has provided more than 10 million pieces of protective equipment to nursing homes and created a database of 95,000 workers who have helped out in hundreds of New York homes.

“This was an overwhelming situation for everyone,” said Jim Malatras, who serves on the governor’s COVID-19 task force. “There were deaths and it’s unfortunate. But it doesn’t mean we weren’t aggressive.”

One key criticism is that New York took weeks after the first known care home outbreaks to begin publicly reporting the number of deaths in individual homes — and still doesn’t report the number of cases. By the time New York began disclosing the deaths in the middle of last month, the state had several major outbreaks with at least 40 deaths each, most of which were a surprise to the surrounding communities and even some family members.

“They should have announced to the public: ‘We have a problem in nursing homes. We’re going to help them, but you need to know where it is,’” said former New York Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey, a Republican who now heads the nonprofit Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths. “Instead, they took the opposite tack: They hid it.”

Further, there has been a lack of testing in several recent New York outbreaks, including one that killed 98 residents, many of whom died with COVID-19 symptoms without ever being tested.

Unlike West Virginia, New York has not mandated testing in its more than 1,150 nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Nor has Cuomo followed the lead of such states as Maryland, Florida, Tennessee and Wisconsin in dispatching National Guard teams to homes to conduct testing, triage and some care.

To be sure, it’s difficult to gauge the impact of such actions. New York accounts for about a third of all COVID-19-related deaths in the U.S. And while those states reported fewer nursing home deaths than New York, all have a larger share of nursing home deaths out of their state’s totals than New York’s 25 percent.

“No state is doing even close to an adequate job,” said Elaine Ryan, AARP’s vice president for state advocacy.

New York has faced particular scrutiny for a March 25 state health department directive requiring nursing homes to take recovering coronavirus patients.

“A number of nursing homes have felt constrained by the order and admitted hospital discharged patients without knowing what their COVID status was,” said Chris Laxton, executive director of the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. “This order made an already difficult situation almost impossible.”

The order, similar to one in neighboring New Jersey, was intended to help free up hospital beds for the sickest patients as cases surged. But critics have suggested nursing homes were already overwhelmed and a better solution might have been sending them to the virtually empty Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, which was retrofitted to treat COVID-19 patients, or an even less utilized Navy hospital ship that has since left Manhattan.

As the virus was racing through his nursing home, the head of Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill Health Center frantically emailed state health officials April 9 asking just that.

“Is there a way for us to send our suspected covid cases to the Javitz center or the ship?” Donny Tuchman wrote.

Tuchman said he was denied permission. Eventually, more than 50 residents at his home would die.

Added the lawmaker Kim: “We could have figured out how to isolate these folks. We failed to do that.”

Rich Azzopardi, a senior advisor to Cuomo, said controversy over use of the convention center and the hospital ship is a “red herring” because patients discharged to nursing homes were “outside of what the feds would accept” at those facilities.

A state Health Department spokeswoman added the state is not tracking how many COVID-infected patients were admitted to nursing homes under the directive but homes should not take on new patients if they are “not medically prepared” to meet their needs.

“Throwing in new residents who may or may not have been stable at that point could not possibly have been to the benefit of any facility,” said Dr. Roy Goldberg, medical director of the Kings Harbor Multicare Center, a nursing home in the Bronx that has seen 56 deaths.

That’s A Valid Demand In Front Of Sukumar

Share

During the lockdown times, creative filmmaker Sukumar is not only re-writing some parts of Pushpa but also planning his next movies. For that, he is actually taking feedback from some of his well-wishers as to what type of cinema they would love him to do after wrapping Allu Arjun’s movie.

Some say that, no matter what genre movie Sukumar picks up including a stylish thriller like Nannaku Prematho or a rugged movie like Rangasthalam (or Pushpa), they want him to do this. Sukumar has effectively showcased Godavari slang Telugu in Rangasthalam and now he’s trying hand at Chittoor dialect Telugu language in Pushpa movie. But what about Telangana slang then?

Actually filmmakers like Sekhar Kammula and Sandeep Reddy Vanga should be credited for giving that new heroic status to Telangana dialect through their movies like Fidaa and Arjun Reddy. But a big director hasn’t picked up the dialect yet for their leading men and fans are expecting Sukumar to do that first.

Well, Sukumar already had a story that deals with Telangana based story, which he actually first narrated to Mahesh Babu. So let’s see if he brings that out of the shelf yet again.

Why KCR Should Be The National Leader?

Share

Telangana CM KCR had to interact with journos more number of times than usual to give health briefings and other updates on further moves in the state. His press meets are not just the reading out statistics and answering the routine questions, but much more than that. We have seen how his live press meets have been keeping the people arrested on their TV sets, and we will see why.

KCR’s address to the people and media shows his clarity and knowledge on every aspect he speaks and in every answer he gives. KCR pleaded the people of the state to cooperate with him for a few more days as he understands the need to explain, did the same with even minute details.

KCR’s explanation and decisions are reasonable and agreeable, be it his extension of lockdown time or his stand to support farmers as no other state did. His fluent and elegant speech in Hindi does not just the migrants make understand the situation, but his concern and care for them too.

There are many other little annotations that come and go in his speeches, which actually make a lot of sense. KCR while asking the people to maintain the coronavirus guidelines, took the word ‘social distancing’ and he immediately changed it to ‘physical distancing’, saying that the former word is sounding and making wrong sense. Also, his self-correction when mentioning the places and percentages of COVID-19 spread and recoveries deserves a special mention, as he wants to give the accurate data even it could get away as a mistake from confusion.

The Telangana CM once again proved that he is very good at giving left and right when he slammed at the center for not lending the helping hand but above that levying prices on migrants travel. He even proved that he is equally good at appreciating the good work when he showers praises on Kerala’s exemplary model in flattening and crushing the curve to the ground with minimal damage.

KCR, though extended the lockdown to 29th of May, his explanation in need for opening the liquor shops and the imposing low percent tax than other states appeared agreeable, be it the reason for local breweries, liquor licenses or the state revenue. He pleaded the public to cooperate with him, and he also warned them to follow the guidelines, saying that saving lives is important.

Well, the Telangana CM’s sense of humor needs a special mention here. When the CM spoke about the valuation of Intermediate examinations, he said it as ‘invigilation’ ‘instead of ‘valuation’. It made them all smile when the CM said it’s been a long time since he came out of college and forgot the word.

KCR never minces the words during his address to media and state, or even when he is answering the questions shot from journos at the meet. There is undoubtedly no other Chief Minister in the country with so much clarity and knowledge on any aspect given, which makes most us feel strongly that he should not be the leader for just Telangana but needs to be a national leader leading the nation with his dynamism and diligence.

Anil Ravipudi interested in Balayya now

Share

Successful director Anil Ravipudi is a huge fan of Nandamuri Balakrishna. He said on many occasions that it is his dream to direct Balayya once in his career. Actually before F2, Anil Ravipudi actually tried to do a movie with Balayya with the title Rama Rao. However Balakrishna hasn’t shown interest in that project then. Cut to present, Balakrishna has faced three big disasters last year. Coming to Anil Ravipudi he has scored biggest hits with F2 and Sarileru Neekevvaru with Mahesh Babu.

Anil Ravipudi in this lock down period is in his home town. He has updated that F3 script work is happening in this time. We recently learnt that Ravipudi has completed the final draft of F3 and is waiting for lock down to get lifted so that he can narrate it to both Venkatesh and Varun Tej.

But this will take more time than expected. So Ravipudi is now shifted his focus to another project. He is again concentrating to direct Balayya. It is said that Anil Ravipudi is preparing another interesting script for Nandamuri Balakrishna. We have to wait and see whether this time Balayya will accept Ravipudi’s script.

‘We don’t want your 1 crore – Close LG Polymers and we will give 2 Crores’

Share

It is known that there was a protest by the villagers outside the LG Polymers factory who were suffered in the gas leak from the same company which is situated near the Vizag city. They demanded the government to move the company from their premises.

On the other side, the AP government who understood the gravity of the situation announced Rs.1 crore ex-gratia for the families of those who lost their lives in the gas leak. The opposition also stunned with this huge announcement but much to a shock to Jagan’s government, the victims reacted quite unexpectedly.

One mother wants his dad child instead of Rs. 1 crore while the other says that they don’t want Rs. 1 crore and all they want is the shut down of the company indefinitely. She added that all the villagers will collect funds and will give the government Rs.2 crores in return to do so.

Speaking about the government offering a job in the same company to one person in the victim’s families, they questioned, “this company doesn’t have an ambulance for emergency cases and how can we risk our lives by joining in that company?” It has become very hard for the police to control the mob and the government needs to bring a conclusion as soon as possible.

Talasani vs JaggaReddy TG politics on fire

Share

Amid this COVID-19 crisis, the Telangana politics are on fire as the Telangana Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav made some sensational comments on the TPCC Chief Uttam Kumar Reddy and the soldiers of Indian Army.

It is known that Uttam Kumar Reddy served in the Indian border and now, Talasani said that the soldiers are nothing but employees who work for a salary like any other labour. Citing this statement from Talasani Jagga Reddy fired on the TRS party standards.

Jagga Reddy asked Talasani, ‘How can you say that all the soldiers who are risking their lives in our borders work only for salary. This is nothing but insulting the entire Indian Army as well as the country.”

“Uttam Kumar worked a pilot in many warplanes and once he got out a plane through a parachute in which he had to risk his life and had a back injury in that incident,” Jagga Reddy added.

Now, on behalf of the entire Telangana Congress, Jagga Reddy is demanding an apology from Minister Srinivas Yadav.

He also mentioned how Talasani criticized the Congress leaders as Jokers and Buffoons. Jagga Reddy reminded Talasani of the incident where he threatened KCR of beating him stripping all his clothes and asked Talasani who is the Joker and Buffoon now when he was offered the ministry from the same KCR.

Sharwanand not interested in Addala’s script any more?

Share

Young hero Sharwanand has been facing tough times when it comes to his career. His last three films at the box office are major disappointments. He has trusted Jaanu to be a relief in his career but it turns out to be a major dud. So Sharwanand has decided to be tough on scripts. Sharwanand has listened to Srikanth Addala’s script last year. Though he liked it, with some hesitation, he couldn’t take it forward.

Srikanth Addala after the super flop of Brahmotsavam has been through exile from some years and finally appeared in film nagar last year. He has narrated Kuchipudi Vaari Veedhi script to Sharwanand. Geetha Arts too has shown interest in producing the film. However it got postponed to this year.

Now with Jaanu flop, there are no chances that Sharwanand might take a risk. So Srikanth Addala needs to make Asuran remake Naarappa a hit if he has to continue his career as director in the industry. We have to see what will happen.
