Mari Selvaraj Faces Backlash Over Repeated Caste-Based Films

Share

Tamil filmmaker Mari Selvaraj, known for his focus on caste oppression and social issues, is once again at the center of debate with his latest film Bison, starring Dhruv Vikram. The movie, released last week, aims to highlight the continued caste-based humiliation and violence faced by marginalized communities. However, it has also sparked controversy, with certain groups protesting the film and claiming that its narrative incites casteism.

During a success meet in Chennai, Mari Selvaraj made an emotional appeal to the audience, requesting that people stop asking why he repeatedly makes films centered on caste discrimination. The Karnan director expressed that such questions have deeply affected him and his work. He pointed out that while over 300 films focusing purely on entertainment are released every year, he seeks the freedom to continue creating films driven by conviction and social commentary.

Despite his intentions, Mari Selvaraj’s remarks received criticism from sections of the Tamil audience. Many feel that his repeated focus on caste-based narratives may lead to saturation and fatigue, while some questioned his motives, wondering whether he is pushing a personal agenda under the guise of creativity. The debate highlights the fine balance filmmakers must strike between social messaging and audience engagement.

Likitha Reddy Hints at Jr NTR-Prashanth Neel Film Update

Share

In recent days, rumors have been swirling about the much-awaited film of Jr NTR and director Prashanth Neel, tentatively titled #NTRNeel. Media reports suggested that NTR was reportedly unhappy with some of the footage shot so far and requested reshoots, causing further delays. Speculation even arose that the project could be shelved due to differences between the actor and director.

Amid these reports, Prashanth Neel’s wife, Likitha Reddy, addressed fan curiosity about the film. She recently shared a Diwali picture with her husband, captioning it, “With my donga mogudu in white…finally.” When an NTR fan inquired about the film’s progress, Likitha responded, “will come at the right time,” offering fans a reassuring sign amidst the rumors.

Sources indicate that the new shooting schedule for #NTRNeel is expected to begin in November. Fans continue to await an official update from the makers to put an end to the ongoing speculation surrounding the film.

Andhra Pradesh Alliance Faces Growing Anti-Incumbency

Share

Barely a year and a half into its tenure, the alliance government in Andhra Pradesh is facing mounting public dissatisfaction and intense anti-incumbency. What initially seemed like a strong coalition is now grappling with internal rifts, governance challenges, and a declining public image. Two major issues — the proliferation of fake liquor and the influence of the sand mafia — have dealt significant blows to public trust, giving the opposition YSRCP renewed momentum ahead of the 2029 elections.

Factionalism within the coalition has become increasingly visible. In Anantapur, MLA Daggubati Prasad’s derogatory remarks against Jr. NTR sparked widespread outrage, while clashes between Tadipatri municipal chairman JC Prabhakar Reddy and Jammalamadugu BJP MLA Adinarayana Reddy further exposed divisions. Statements from the JC brothers, and repeated disputes between Kadapa MLA Madhavi Reddy and Kamalapuram MLA Chaitanya Reddy, have projected a fractured image. Rivalries among Vijayawada leaders Kesineni Chinni and Kolikapudi, along with public criticism of Gannavaram MLA Yarlagadda Venkat Rao by party colleagues, have amplified perceptions of disunity.

Even recent Assembly proceedings highlighted cracks within the coalition. TDP leader Bonda Uma publicly questioned Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan’s inaccessibility, triggering a sharp response. Similarly, TDP MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna’s criticism of the cinematography minister over protocol issues, including remarks involving actor Chiranjeevi, added further embarrassment.

The recent murder of Lakshmi Naidu has intensified tensions between two dominant communities within the alliance’s voter base. Allegations of Pawan Kalyan’s interference in the Home Department, coupled with MP Raghurama Raju’s sarcastic remarks, have fueled public criticism. With recurring governance lapses, corruption claims, and persistent factionalism, the coalition’s credibility is eroding fast. Every misstep and public quarrel strengthens the YSRCP’s position, providing the opposition with fresh political momentum. If the alliance fails to restore discipline and deliver effective governance soon, its path to political survival could become increasingly precarious.

Microsoft Veteran Joe Friend Reflects on Abrupt Layoff

Share

After two decades at Microsoft, 62-year-old Joe Friend never expected his career to end with an abrupt layoff. In May 2025, the veteran manager, who had been serving as Director of Product Management, was unexpectedly let go — a decision that left him shocked and forced him to reconsider his retirement plans.

“It feels like a betrayal,” Joe told Business Insider. “I wasn’t surprised by the layoffs, but I was surprised to get caught up in them.” He had a strong performance record and managed a team of nine, yet when the cuts hit, 15 employees from his department, including four managers, were let go.

Retirement Plans Disrupted
Joe had intended to work until 65 so that his unvested stock could continue to vest after retirement. “I planned to figure out what I wanted to do over the next three years. Then suddenly, I’m at the doorstep and have to make that decision now,” he said.

Joe’s journey with Microsoft began in 1994 as a Lead Program Manager on the Microsoft Word team. He left briefly to work for an NGO in Indonesia but returned in 2003. After 14 years, he left in 2017 due to burnout, only to rejoin in 2018, attracted by what he described as a “new cultural shift.”

The Unspoken Deal Broken
Microsoft offered Joe pay through July along with a severance package nearly equivalent to a year’s salary. While financially secure, the emotional impact has been significant. “It feels like the unspoken deal is broken,” he said. “If you perform well, you used to be rewarded and secure. I don’t think that’s true anymore.”

Moving Beyond Big Tech
Looking ahead, Joe plans to step away from the corporate tech world. “I think I’d rather earn $50,000 a year doing something I love,” he shared. “It doesn’t mean I won’t work again — but it definitely won’t be in Big Tech.”

For Joe, the layoff was more than just a career setback; it marked the end of an era of loyalty and trust in a company he once considered home.

Sukumar Launches Kumari 22F Under New Banner

Ace filmmaker Sukumar, known for his unique storytelling style in Telugu cinema, has always been a strong supporter of emerging talent. Over the years, he has encouraged several of his assistant directors to step into independent filmmaking. Notable names such as Buchi Babu Sana, Srikanth Odela, Karthik Dandu, and Palnati Surya Pratap have all trained under his mentorship.

To provide a platform for new voices, Sukumar established his own production banner, Sukumar Writings. The banner debuted with Kumari 21F (2015), directed by Palnati Surya Pratap, which stood out for its bold and unconventional narrative. Following that, Uppena by Buchi Babu Sana and Virupaksha by Karthik Dandu further cemented the banner’s reputation for nurturing fresh talent.

Now, Sukumar Writings is reportedly set to produce a spiritual sequel to Kumari 21F, titled Kumari 22F. The film will be helmed by one of Sukumar’s trusted associates. Interestingly, the project will be a joint venture between Sukumar Writings and a newly launched banner — Thabitha Sukumar Films, founded by Sukumar’s wife, Thabitha Sukumar.

After presenting Maruti Nagar Subramanyam, Thabitha has now turned full-time producer, and Kumari 22F will mark her debut under her own banner. An official announcement about the film is expected soon.

Naga Vamsi Defends Kingdom, Calls It Above Average

Share

Producer Naga Vamsi, one of the busiest names in Telugu cinema, is currently gearing up for the release of his next film Mass Jathara starring Ravi Teja and directed by Bhanu Bhogavarapu. The film is slated for a grand release on October 31.

Earlier this year, Vamsi bankrolled Kingdom, featuring Vijay Deverakonda under the direction of Jersey fame Gautham Tinnanuri. Despite the high expectations surrounding this combination, the film received a mixed response and was labeled by many as a box-office disappointment.

However, during Mass Jathara promotions, Naga Vamsi clarified that Kingdom was far from a failure. He revealed that the film collected over $1 million in North America from premieres and closed around $1.8 million overall. In the Nizam region, it grossed approximately ₹11 crore. Comparing its performance to Vijay Deverakonda’s Kushi and Family Star, Vamsi stated that Kingdom actually fared better than both.

Explaining the trade dynamics, he added that while some territories recovered 70–90 percent of their investment, others stayed nearly safe after GST adjustments, with only a few facing minor losses. “By trade standards, Kingdom is an above-average film,” he affirmed.

On the work front, Naga Vamsi’s lineup looks strong. After Mass Jathara on October 31, he has Funky starring Vishwak Sen in December, Alcohol with Allari Naresh around New Year, and Anaganaga Oka Raju set for a Sankranthi 2026 release.

Google Expands AI Agriculture Models from India to APAC

Share

In a significant move highlighting the global potential of “India-first” innovations, Google has announced the expansion of its foundational AI models for agriculture to the wider Asia-Pacific region. The Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) and Agricultural Monitoring and Event Detection (AMED) APIs, which have already empowered startups and government bodies in India, are now being made available to trusted testers in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Japan.

These AI-driven models leverage remote sensing and machine learning to provide hyperlocal insights, addressing critical challenges in agriculture. Unlike traditional high-level data aggregation at district or block levels, ALU and AMED deliver field-level intelligence, enabling precise, data-driven interventions.

ALU segments agricultural landscapes using satellite imagery, identifying individual fields, water bodies, and vegetation. AMED builds on this, tracking crop types, acreage, and key events like sowing and harvesting, with data refreshed every 15 days for near real-time monitoring. Together, these models unlock a previously unavailable dataset, allowing policymakers, AgriTech companies, and financial institutions to make informed decisions.

The models are powered by Google’s decades-long investment in geospatial technologies like Google Maps. While accuracy varies regionally, Google employs a multi-pronged validation strategy, combining machine learning checks, government data comparisons, and independent third-party verification.

Real-world applications are already transforming agriculture in India. From improving crop yield advisory services to enabling low-cost verification for agricultural loans, these models are reshaping the ecosystem. Partners include the Krishi DSS national platform, the Government of Telangana’s AdEx platform, and CEEW, which uses the APIs to design climate-friendly crop incentives.

With this expansion to the APAC region, Google envisions a scalable, ecosystem-led approach to agriculture. “Solutions that address India’s most pressing challenges can also solve for the world,” said Alok Talekar, Lead for Agriculture and Sustainability Research at Google DeepMind. Importantly, the data is purely geospatial with no PII, ensuring farmer privacy.

Google’s initiative exemplifies how AI and data-driven insights can empower farmers, optimize agricultural practices, and enhance financial access, while demonstrating the global scalability of innovations born in India.

Bollywood’s Cinematic Universe Fatigue

Share

Cinematic universes have become the latest trend in Indian cinema. Inspired by Hollywood, several filmmakers began crafting interconnected storylines and recurring characters to capitalize on the craze. Bollywood joined the race with YRF’s Spy Universe and Maddock Films’ Horror Comedy Universe, enjoying success with films like War, Pathaan, Bhediya, and Stree 2.

However, the landscape appears to be shifting in 2025. Audience interest in universe-based storytelling seems to be waning. The formula of linking films without strong content is starting to backfire, as the hype around the term “universe” alone no longer guarantees box office success.

Recent releases illustrate this trend. War 2 from YRF’s Spy Universe opened to lukewarm reviews and recorded one of the weakest openings for a major franchise film. Similarly, Thamma from the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe received an initial decent response but failed to sustain momentum after the first day.

Trade analysts warn that this could be an early sign of trouble for Bollywood studios. Producing films merely to keep a cinematic universe alive, without innovative storytelling or compelling content, risks undermining the entire concept. Audiences are increasingly selective, seeking fresh ideas, emotional depth, and strong narratives. While star power and connected universes may generate initial buzz, long-term success demands genuine creativity and effort.

For Bollywood’s cinematic universes to remain relevant, filmmakers must prioritize content over continuity. Without it, a strategy that once promised big profits could soon become a costly burden.

Bison Success Meet: Mari Selvaraj Talks Social Themes in Cinema

Share

Tamil filmmaker Mari Selvaraj, renowned for creating socially conscious cinema, recently spoke at the success meet of his latest film, Bison. Released in Tamil on October 17 as a Diwali special, the Telugu version premiered later due to stiff competition at the box office. Since its release, Bison has garnered positive word of mouth, with several theatres reporting full houses and audiences appreciating its storytelling, though some critics shared mixed opinions on social media.

Addressing questions about his choice of themes, Selvaraj emotionally stated, “Don’t ask why I take these kinds of films. It affects me heavily. I am very adamant that I will make films addressing caste issues. There are 300 films being made purely for entertainment. Leave me alone.” He emphasized that cinema should either entertain or educate, and while mainstream entertainment is abundant, films that tackle social issues are rare.

Following the success of his debut Pariyerum Perumal and Karnan, Selvaraj continues his commitment to socially relevant storytelling with Bison, blending entertainment with meaningful commentary. The film stars Dhruv Vikram, Pasupathy, Ameer, Lal, Anupama Parameswaran, Rajisha Vijayan, and others, and is produced by Sameer Nair, Deepak Segal, P.A. Ranjith, and Aditi Anand under Applause Entertainment and Neelam Studios.

Siddhu Jonnalagadda’s Kohinoor Put on Hold After Box Office Flops

Share

Siddhu Jonnalagadda, who rose to prominence with the success of the Tillu films, has faced a challenging year at the box office, with his recent releases Jack and Telusu Kada failing to make an impact. These consecutive flops have slowed the actor’s market momentum considerably.

Earlier, producer Naga Vamsi of Sithara Entertainments had announced a pan-Indian, big-budget film titled Kohinoor, with Siddhu in the lead. However, reports now suggest that the project has been put on hold and may even be scrapped entirely.

The decision comes amid broader financial pressures, including a significant decline in OTT revenues. Netflix, a consistent buyer of Sithara Entertainments’ films, is reportedly renegotiating older deals and offering lower prices due to the shrinking digital market.

Given these circumstances, launching an ambitious project like Kohinoor with Siddhu Jonnalagadda represents a substantial financial risk. With recent losses impacting the production house, Naga Vamsi appears to have opted for a cautious pause on the project for the time being.
