SSMB29, one of Indian cinema’s most anticipated films, boasts a stellar lineup featuring director SS Rajamouli, superstar Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and music composer M. M. Keeravani. However, fans eagerly awaiting production updates may need to wait a bit longer, as the planned shooting schedule has hit an unexpected roadblock.

The film’s next major shooting phase was originally set to commence this month in Kenya. But according to a report from The New York Times, escalating unrest in the country has forced the team to postpone the schedule. Kenya has been witnessing intense protests in recent weeks, fueled by public outrage over the government’s mishandling of financial policies and deep-rooted corruption.

The violent clashes between protestors and security forces have led to the deaths of at least 38 people, including two children, just last week. A previous wave of demonstrations had already claimed 16 lives. Although the Kenya schedule was locked in two months ago, the worsening security situation has made it untenable for Rajamouli’s team to proceed as planned.

As a result, the production is unlikely to kick off this week. The team is now exploring alternative locations, with Tanzania and South Africa emerging as potential options. A revised schedule is expected to be finalized soon, ensuring the shoot resumes in a safer environment.

SSMB29 is also notable for a significant change in Rajamouli’s core crew. The acclaimed director has parted ways with his long-time collaborator, cinematographer K.K. Senthil Kumar, who was instrumental in the visual grandeur of RRR, Baahubali, Eega, and Magadheera. In his place, Rajamouli has brought in P. S. Vinod as the film’s cinematographer—a choice reportedly made by the director himself to bring a fresh visual style to this ambitious project.

Google has announced a suite of open-source artificial intelligence (AI) tools aimed at transforming India’s agricultural sector and enriching cultural and linguistic diversity in global AI models. The initiative includes the launch of the Agricultural Monitoring and Event Detection (AMED) API and a strategic collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur under the company’s Amplify Initiative.

Developed by Google DeepMind in partnership with Google’s Partnerships Innovation team, the AMED API builds upon the earlier Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) API. It integrates satellite imagery, crop labels, and machine learning to provide granular, real-time insights into field activity—including crop types, sowing and harvesting schedules, and land usage over the past three years. Updated fortnightly, the API is designed to empower agri-tech developers, researchers, and policymakers with data-driven tools to improve productivity and climate resilience in farming.

Alok Talekar, Agriculture and Sustainability Research Lead at Google DeepMind, stated that the API will support more effective agricultural interventions by offering precise, real-time information. Startups like TerraStack, incubated at IIT Bombay, are already utilizing Google’s APIs to develop rural land intelligence systems for applications such as climate risk analysis and rural credit assessment.

In parallel, Google is working with IIT Kharagpur through the Amplify Initiative to promote the development of high-quality, hyperlocal datasets in Indian languages. These datasets will be openly available to foster more inclusive and culturally relevant AI systems. The collaboration marks a significant step in building AI that reflects the rich linguistic and cultural fabric of India. The effort is informed by a community-centric and expert-reviewed approach to ensure accuracy and minimize bias.

Dr. Mainack Mandal of IIT Kharagpur described the collaboration as a pivotal moment in global AI development, emphasizing the importance of building systems that resonate with India’s diversity.

This initiative complements Project Vaani, which recently reached a key milestone by contributing over 21,000 hours of Indic language speech audio and 800 hours of transcriptions. The data, sourced from more than 112,000 speakers across 120 districts, is now accessible via India’s Bhashini platform and Hugging Face.

Dr. Partha Talukdar, Language Research Lead at Google DeepMind, reiterated the company’s commitment to creating AI experiences that are natural and intuitive for users across diverse linguistic and cultural contexts.

Google also highlighted the broader impact of its AI research, including applications in maternal health, clinical efficiency, and scientific innovation. The AlphaFold Protein Structure Database, developed by Google DeepMind, is currently being used by over 150,000 researchers in India to accelerate studies on diseases such as cancer and autoimmune disorders.

These new tools and partnerships underscore Google’s ongoing investment in AI for social good, with a particular focus on making technological advancements more accessible and impactful for India’s unique ecosystem.

In Telugu cinema, she shared the screen with legends like NTR and ANR, contributing to several iconic films. Over her career, she acted in more than 200 films across multiple languages.

Saroja Devi had been suffering from health complications and breathed her last on July 14. Despite her health struggles, she expressed a noble wish — to donate her eyes after her death. She had formally pledged her eyes to Narayana Nethralaya, an eye hospital she frequently visited. Honoring her wish, the hospital promptly harvested and preserved her corneas after her passing.

The medical team at Narayana Nethralaya confirmed this and mentioned that her corneas will soon be transplanted to those in need. This generous act has earned admiration from cinephiles and the public, who are lauding her compassion even in death.

At 87, Saroja Devi was a beloved star, especially during the black-and-white era of cinema. While today’s younger generation may not be very familiar with her, she was a leading heroine and an icon during the 1950s and 60s, delivering memorable performances in Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada films.

Her demise is a significant loss to the South Indian film industry, especially coming just a day after the death of veteran Telugu actor Kota Srinivasa Rao on July 13. The back-to-back losses have left the industry in deep mourning.
