Tirupati AICC session and Congress elections

Share

Congress leaders like Shashi Tharoor are suggesting an election of a new party president. They have probably forgotten the Tirupati Congress session in April 1992 to elect a new Congress Working Committee. This exercise in democracy astonished arch Brahmin P.V. Narasimha Rao because Arjun Singh, a Rajput, led the pack followed by intermediate casts like Sharad Pawar and Rajesh Pilot. The results were declared null and void. Why this happened is explained at the end of this piece.

This being the 30th anniversary of one of Rajiv Gandhi gaffes, from which the party could never really recover, I have hung the story on that peg.

Two retrogressive steps taken by Rajiv Gandhi to please the “Mullah”, naturally alienated the liberals on all sides. He reversed a Supreme Court verdict providing maintenance to an elderly Muslim widow – Shah Bano. Later, he banned Salman Rushdie’s “Satanic Verses”.

Then, to keep the Hindu vote, he allowed the locks of the Ram Mandir to be opened.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) was spurred into action. The reversal of the Shah Bano verdict was a Godsend: “Muslim appeasement” thundered Ashok Singhal of the VHP. Having upped the ante on this count, the VHP was anxious on another: the Congress was beginning to poach on its Ayodhya platform. This competition in Hindu radicalism defined much of the subsequent politics.

In this competition, the climax was reached in 1989 when, in preparation for elections, Rajiv Gandhi announced in Ayodhya that should he be elected, he would usher in Ram Rajya, a sort of Hindu Shariah. This when the VHP was already embarked on one of the great mass mobilization strategies. Bricks would be consecrated in all the temples in the country, particularly in North India, and carried to Ayodhya for the construction of the Ram Temple.

At this very time, Rajiv Gandhi’s favoured Finance Minister, V.P. Singh, added fuel to the cauldron already bubbling over. He charged Rajiv Gandhi for large-scale corruption in the purchase of Bofors Field Guns. The charge was never proved but a harried Rajiv plotted frenetically. While V.P. Singh was challenging his moral credentials, the VHP made him look weak on the Ram Mandir. This challenge too Rajiv decided to take up without sufficient clarity of direction.

The Allahabad High Court had stayed the building of the temple on land disputed by the Muslims. By a show of massive force the VHP threatened to lay the foundation stone of the temple on land which was disputed and would therefore violate the court’s order. If the VHP carried out the threat successfully, it would be a huge slap on the face of the administration. It would imply that the police and the official machinery were more loyal to their faith than orders from their superiors.

What then should Rajiv do?

Join them, if you can’t beat them. Help their “Shilanyas” but only by resorting to subterfuge, unadulterated deceit, which I saw with my own eyes, seated as I was next to the District Magistrate of Faizabad, Ram Sharan Srivastava. The trick was this. To please Ashok Singhal, “Shilanyas” would be allowed “discreetly” on the land which was disputed. Once Singhal and his hundreds of “Ram Bhakts” had left, chanting slogans, Srivastava would put out a press note saying that a token stone laying ceremony had taken place on land which was “not disputed”.

No sooner was the press note on the wires, than Singhal called his own very well attended Press Conference. “We have performed ‘Shilanyas’ on land which was in our original plan for the Ram Temple.”

The story perpetuated by the Gandhi-Nehru family loyalists has been that the Muslim vote walked out from the Congress en masse because P.V. Narasimha slept while the Babari Masjid was demolished on the fateful day, December 6, 1992. This is only partly true. The real haemorrhage had begun earlier, soon after the Congress allowed the brick laying ceremony to take place on land belonging to Muslims in violation of the High Court order.

I remember, a Congress stalwart of Faizabad, Nasir Hussain, weeping. “Rajiv has finished the Congress in Uttar Pradesh,” he said. He was right. It was all so short sighted. After all, it was not Congress policy to build the Ram Mandir. And yet the Congress had begun to look a saffron party. Was this only a perception among Muslims?

P.V. Narasimha Rao, ofcourse, created conditions for Atal Behari Vajpayee to take over as the BJP’s Prime Minister for a distinct set of reasons. These reasons were embedded in the verdict of 1991 election which brought PV to power. Because elections in the North, where the Congress had done badly, were over when Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated, the emotional factor which helped the Congress to scrape through operated only in the south. In other words India’s first Prime Minister from the South, was by a fluke of fortune kept buoyant by the southern contingent in the Congress parliamentary party.

This meant that his political security and longevity in power dictated that he should not allow a powerful leader to emerge in the North. Narayan Datt Tiwari was something of a has-been, but Arjun Singh could always mount a challenge. He had to be outfoxed. There was another anti Arjun Singh factor operating in PV’s deep core, aggravated by Chandraswami, the tantric constantly by his side. During the 1991 elections, key Brahmins like Tiwari, Lokpati Tripathi, Rajendra Kumari Bajpai, Jagannath Mishra, Jitendra Prasada, Bindeshwari Dubey, K.K. Tiwary, Vasant Sathe, V.N. Gadgil, Gundu Rao, all lost. Brahmins outside the Congress, Ramakrishna Hedge and Madhu Dandvate too. The abiding Brahmin in PV moved him to accommodate Pranab Mukherjee, Bhuvnesh Chaturvedi, V.N. Gadgil, Naval Kishore Sharma, Jitendra Prasada, and others in his office, the Rajya Sabha, as party General Secretaries and official spokesmen. But Arjun Singh, who had beaten everybody in the popularity stakes in Tirupati, the “wily” Rajput, had to be kept at bay. The Congress may therefore never hold elections just in case the party finds a leader who has the potential to upstage the Gandhis.

Nabha Suffers from Fever with RGV’s Act

Share

Nabha Natesh became hot property with “iSmart Shankar”. She took a very active role in the film’s promotions before the release and after the release but she is now missing from the action for the past few days.

At one time, the other heroine Nidhii Agerwal got miffed with Nabha’s overdrive in promoting the movie. Nidhii even planned to hold a press meet on her own.

Such hungama Nabha created in the early days after the release of “iSmart Shankar”. Then why is she not appearing in recent events and press meets? Did anyone stop her?

On our inquiry, it is revealed that the beautiful girl fell sick after Ram Gopal Varma went overboard during one of the film’s success parties.

RGV enjoyed the film’s success more than director Puri Jagannadh and he poured champagne bottles on the heads of all present at the party.

Nabha too suffered in the hands of RGV as the maverick director drenched her in champagne. She soon caught with a fever. She is yet to recover from this.

Nabha will also have to join the shoot of Ravi Teja’s “Disco Raja” but RGV made her fall for sickness.

It’s shameful to put a price on a girl: Actress

Share

Even though dowry is illegal in India since 1961, it is still prevalent, and actress Parineeti Chopra is shocked at how Indian families consider it a “gift”.

“Everyone knows that dowry is illegal and immoral but they practice it. What makes me angry is that people have renamed it ‘gift’ so that it sounds good. Dowry simply means that you are putting a price on the girl and buying her.

“We call ourselves modern but then what are we doing? To look superior, we are asking the girls’ families for money and luxurious things. It is the unfortunate scenario of our country,” Parineeti told IANS, while promoting her forthcoming film “Jabariya Jodi”.

A direct outcome of the dowry menace is another crime — the practice of abducting eligible bachelors and forcing them to marry girls, mostly at gunpoint. This crime, known as “pakadwa vivah” (forced marriage), is rampant in Bihar for years. Often, such forced marriage happens because the family of the groom in question demands a hefty dowry.

“Jabariya Jodi” is a lighthearted drama centred on the concept of “pakadwa vivah”.

“Although ‘pakadwa vivah’ is an anti-dowry practice, it is wrong. You cannot just kidnap someone and force them to get married. However, if there is no demand of dowry, there will be no ‘pakdwa vivah’. I request people to stop putting a price on girl’s life,” Parineeti said.

Apart from “Jabariya Jodi”, Parineeti has two major films in her kitty. She will be seen in ace shuttler Saina Nehwal’s biopic and the Hindi remake of “The Girl On The Train”.

Talking about the Saina biopic, Parineeti said that it is one of her most challenging roles ever.

“It’s really difficult to play somebody who is respected globally. I know there will be comparisons, and I am prepared for that. I want to do justice while portraying Saina because she has achieved a lot in her life. I want to make everyone feel proud,” she said, adding: “For this role, I had to come out of my comfort zone. No one would have thought that I will play a sportsperson in my life, but here I am. There are multiple challenges. I hope I conquer them all,” Parineeti added.

TDP’s Frustration on AP People

Share

TDP has got one of its worst defeats ever in 2019 Assembly election. While YCP swept 151 out of 175 seats, TDP was confined to 23 Assembly seats. This is indeed a rude shock to Naidu and his team of leaders. Looks like, TDP is yet to recover from this poll drubbing.

The latest is its leader Varla Ramaiah has vented out his frustration and anger on public for voting Jagan Mohan Reddy as CM. He made some shocking yet startling comments on people.

Questioning the people of AP for making an A-1 accused (YS Jagan Mohan Reddy) as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Varla Ramiah said the credit of making a “corrupt” as CM goes to the people of AP. He further questioned that what benefit Jagan will do to AP.

He recalled that YS Jagan is an accused in 11 cases. He found fault with people for giving power to A-1 (YS Jagan) and A-2 (Vijay Sai Reddy). He asked how people can vote to such “corrupt” leaders. Ramaiah said A-1 Jagan is on a foreign tour and A-2 Vijay Sai Reddy is lobbying with Centre in New Delhi and A-3 Nimmagadda Prasad was arrested in Serbia.

The former police officer Varla Ramiah’s comments on people have become hot topic in political circles.

Talk: Sukumar Outshined Dil Raju With ‘Bound Script’

Share

In a classic case of convincing the hero with a ‘bound script’, producer Dil Raju is said to have impressed Allu Arjun big time. And that is what led to some friction with other projects until Sukumar gave a surprise to the leading producer.

Immediately after signing Trivikram’s movie, Stylish Star has in fact okayed Sukumar’s movie and also agreed to do Dil Raju’s Icon that will be directed by Venu Sriram of MCA fame. However, with Raju’s film having a bound script, it came out that Bunny might start this film much in advance to Sukumar’s movie.

But then, the creative director took his time to finish the script at record time and presented Bunny with a full version of the film. That changed the course of action now. Without thinking about Icon first, it is heard that the mega hero will start the shooting of Sukumar’s film from September. Later, the shooting of Icon will be started. That way we could say that our creative director outshined Raju garu.

Also with Dil Raju not happy with the idea of Bunny using the same look for Sukku’s film and Icon, the hero will wrap Sukumar’s movie to the maximum, before starting Icon shoot, says a source.

#BiggBoss3: Is She Going To Face Eviction?

Share

After the 15 contestants have started to impress the audiences in their own way, surely BiggBoss and voting will give the ultimate twist by eliminating one of them each week. Last time we have seen Hema getting axed and this time another contestant will be out.

With Saturday here, rumours are around the corner about the possible contestant who might get eliminated. While Sreemukhi, Himaja, Jaffer, Mahesh, Varun Sandesh, Vithika, Punarnavi and Rahul Sipligunj got nominated for eviction this week, Varun got saved as he became House Captain. So what’s the assumption anyway?

For her hotheaded behaviour, lack of apathy towards other contestants and supporting her husband as the only agenda, Vithika has fallen under the scanner of audiences for sure. And as she found fault with Punarnavi for advising her, for blasting Varun as she stood by Punarnavi to support truth, and the way she forced her husband to tender an apology, she went into the negative books of everyone.

Surely there will be quite less votes for her if the mood is anything to go by, and she might get eliminated this Sunday night.
