The lines between regional and national cinema in India are fading rapidly, as Bollywood and South Indian industries continue to collaborate on big-scale projects. Whether it’s Shah Rukh Khan’s ₹1000 crore blockbuster Jawan with Atlee or Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, cross-industry partnerships are now shaping the future of Indian cinema. Even Salman Khan ventured into this space with Sikandar alongside AR Murugadoss, though the film’s outcome was mixed.
One major Bollywood name that had stayed relatively distant from this trend was Aamir Khan. Despite early collaborations with South filmmakers like Ram Gopal Varma (Rangeela) and AR Murugadoss (Ghajini), Aamir had remained cautious in this space in recent years. That, however, appears to be changing.
During promotions for Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir confirmed a major new project – a superhero action film with acclaimed Tamil director Lokesh Kanagaraj. While Lokesh is currently committed to Coolie and Kaithi 2, his film with Aamir is on the cards for the near future.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Aamir is also reportedly collaborating with Telugu director Vamsi Paidipally, known for films like Maharshi and Varisu. This new venture is said to be a socially conscious drama, a genre that aligns well with Aamir’s signature blend of entertainment and meaning. Long-time producer Dil Raju is expected to bankroll the film, marking a significant step in his Hindi production journey.
Adding to the excitement, Aamir will make a cameo appearance in Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie, scheduled for an Independence Day release on August 14. While Sitaare Zameen Par received a moderate response, it didn’t quite deliver the box office punch expected of an Aamir Khan film.
With these new South Indian collaborations, Aamir appears ready to embrace the evolving pan-India landscape, aiming to recapture the limelight with bold choices and diverse storytelling.
