Leaked report: India’s Unemployment rate at 45-year high

Share

In what turn out to be a controversy just 2 months before the Lok Sabha elections and bring headache to the Modi Government, a leaked National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) report states that India’s unemployment rate has been at a 45-year high of 6.1 percent during 2017-18, according to the periodic labour force survey (PLFS). This report apparently was held back by the Modi government and has come to light after two members of the National Statistical Commission (NSC) have resigned on January 28, 2019.

The NSSO survey shows that joblessness is higher in the urban areas compared to rural areas at 7.8%. The report reveals that unemployment stood at 18.7% among urban males aged between 15 and 29 in contrast with 8.1% in 2011-12. Among urban females, it was 27.2 percent in 2017-18; it was 13.1 percent in 2011-12.

The unemployment rate among the educated also has increased in 2017-18 period compared to 2004-05 and 2011-12. Meanwhile, the rate of educated jobless rural women ranged between 9.7 and 15.2%. In 2017-18, it stood at 17.3%.

For rural educated males, the rate was 10.5% in 2017-18, showing a rise from 3.5-4.4 percent between 2004-05 and 2011-12.

Smelling an opportunity in attacking the BJP government, Congress leaders posted a series of remarks on Twitter. Criticising the Modi government, Congress National President tweeted: “NoMo Jobs! The Fuhrer promised us 2 Cr jobs a year. 5 years later, his leaked job creation report card reveals a National Disaster. Unemployment is at its highest in 45 yrs. 6.5 Cr youth are jobless in 2017-18 alone. Time for NoMo2Go. #HowsTheJobs.”

Senior Congress leader tweeted: “We mourn the death of the National Statistical Commission and remember with gratitude its valiant fight to release untainted GDP data and employment data.” Other opposition leaders such as Sitaram Yechury also joined the discourse and tweeted: “Youth unemployment at astoundingly high levels of 13-27%. Lives, Livelihoods lost under Modi government and our most valued asset, our youth put into misery. This has a direct impact on India’s future. Modi’s policies are to just help rich cronies. For the rest, it is Jumlas.”

On the other hand, the Congress is promising an unemployment allowance of Rs. 3000 for youth. With the unemployment data leaked and promises of allowance, we seriously need to think whether the governments want to keep the youth unemployed and use it for their political gains during elections.

#Budget2019: Centre copies Telangana’s Rythu Bandhu scheme

Share

In a surprise move, the NDA government has announced an annual direct income payment of Rs. 6,000 for farmers in the country, directly copying Telangana’s Rythu Bandhu scheme. This announcement was made by Union Minister Piyush Goyal today while presenting the interim budget 2019-2020 terming it “Prime Minister’s Kisan Samman Nidhi.”

Under the scheme, the government will pay Rs. 6,000 in three instalments of Rs 2,000 each. However, the BJP government’s scheme will be restricted to small and marginal farmers with land holdings not exceeding five acres while the Rythu Bandhu financial assistance of Rs 4,000 per acre per season is provided to all farmers in the State, irrespective of their land holdings.

The Centre’s farm assistance scheme is expected to cover about 12 crore farmers across the country, while Rythu Bandhu benefitted about 58 lakh farmers in Kharif alone. This, the Telangana government, believed would bring down farm distress. While this is a welcome move from the Central government, it also is a political gimmick to provide cash handouts to farmers ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

You Are Unfit To Be MLA : Chandrababu Fires On Vishnu

Share

Chandrababu Naidu, who is usually calm and composed, has breathed fire on BJP MLA Penmetsa Vishnu Kumar Raju. When Vishnu Kumar Raju cracked satires on black shirts, dresses worn by TDP MLAs including CM Chandrababu Naidu as a mark of protest against the Centre for not according Special Category Status, CM Chandrababu Naidu has come down heavily on Vishnu.

Vishnu had earlier spoken in the house and claimed that he had less political experience. He however said he had witnessed several political dramas in the last few years taking pot shots at CBN. Vishnu also criticized Chandrababu for “changing colours” indicating at their black dresses. He had also criticized Naidu for joining hands with Congress against which NTR had founded TDP.

Responding to Vishnu’s comments, an emotional and angry Chandrababu said, “You have no right to be a people’s representative. My blood is boiling against the injustice meted out to Andhra Pradesh by the Centre. As there is no one to ask you (BJP), you’re taking us (AP) for granted. What will you do if I ask? Will you put me in jail? What BJP had given to AP? Compare it with what other states have got? When a new state is carved out, instead of supporting it, you (BJP) is pulling it back.”

Probably in never-seen-before anger and tone, Chandrababu fumed on BJP MLA Vishnu. Naidu said Vishnu is unfit to be the MLA. Naidu also gave a stern warning to BJP MLAs that people of the state won’t let them (BJP MLAs) walk freely on the streets owing to the gross injustice to AP.

While Naidu was venting out his anger, MLA Vishnu Kumar Raju intervened and raised “objection” to Chandrababu’s comments. Chandrababu strong retorted, “Who cares your objection?” Who wants your objection?” Chandrababu said the interests of people is above the interests of individuals and political parties.

Regina Getting Huge Applause In B-Town

While dusky siren Regina Cassandra might have kept the news about this role under the wraps, but she is now being hailed as the new girl in Bollywood whose performance is quite impressive.

After missing out a chance to act with Amitabh Bachchan in her debut Bollywood film Aankhen 2 (the project got halted), finally, Regina made her Hindi debut with Sonam Kapoor’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. As her role was not shown in the trailer and other posters, many thought it is a negligible one.

But actually, Regina played the role of a girl who is in a lesbian relationship with Sonam Kapoor. And that clicked quite well it looks like as Bollywood celebs like Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Farah Khan and others are raving about newbie Regina’s performance. Seems like our dusky hottie is going to grab many opportunities in Bollywood now.

On Tamil and Telugu side, actually Regina tried her best to grab the limelight and big offers, but nothing big has worked out for her so far.

For The First Time, Balayya Asked For Bound Script

Share

Other day on the sets of NTR Mahanayakudu, there came a Chief guest to have lunch with Nandamuri Balakrishna. Yes, you guessed it right, that is none other than Boyapati Sreenu who is going to direct the next film venture of this Nandamuri star.

For the record, while Boyapati delivered only above average and disastrous films with all other heroes, he has scored blockbusters with Balayya through Simha and Legend. But these days, those films might not work again and again. That is the reason why Balayya had invited Boyapati for lunch.

The senior hero is said to have asked the dashing director to come up with the bound script first. After some back to back debacles like Paisa Vasool and now Kathanayakudu, Balayya is said to be taking extra care on the script. With Boyapati known for going to shoot without a properly etched script, Balayya is said to have asked him to work on the script first.

Seems like the flop show of Vinaya Vidheya Rama is now giving some tough times for Boyapati. Hope the director will bounce back strongly.

130 students arrested in visa sting face only civil immigration charges: US official

Share

Washington: The 130 students arrested so far in a “pay-to-stay” sting operation using a fake university face only civil immigration charges, according to media reports.

“We have arrested 130 foreign nationals on civil immigration charges,” Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson Carissa Cutrell was quoted as telling the Detroit Free Press on Thursday. She added that more of them could be arrested.

Those students who knowingly participated in scam knowing it was not a genuine academic programme face deportation.

Eight people who allegedly ran the scam as recruiters of the students face criminal charges of conspiracy to commit visa fraud and harbouring aliens for profit and face maximum sentences of five years, according to the ICE service.

Documents filed in court by federal prosecutors said as many as 600 students were enrolled at the fake institution, University of Farmington, set up by immigration officials for the sting operation to catch student visa fraud.

Prosecutors called it a “pay-to-stay” scam because the students paid the recruiters to get documents from from the fake university to enable them to stay on in a student visa without attending classes.

Court documents show that the recruiters were paid between $5,000 and $20,000 at meetings with Homeland Security Investigations agents involved in the university for recruiting the students.

Shiva Kumar, the chairperson of SEVA, the American Telugu Association’s legal assistance programme, told IANS that they were working with the affected students to provide them help.

He said that he had met India’s Ambassador Harsh Vardhan Shringla to ask for help for the students.

The Detroit News said that six alleged recruiters, who were arrested locally, were produced in a local federal court on Thursday wearing ankle chains and handcuffs.

Federal Magistrate Judge David Grand ordered them held without bail. On Monday the court will hear lawyers’ arguments on whether they should be jailed pending their trial.

The two others arrested elsewhere are expected to brought to Detroit.

The Free Press said the students were arrested in early morning raids in New Jersey, Atlanta, Houston, Michigan, California, Louisiana, North Carolina and Missouri states.

The federal prosecutor in Detroit, Matthew Schneider, said in a statement: “We are all aware that international students can be a valuable asset to our country, but as this case shows, the well-intended international student visa program can also be exploited and abused.”

The students had come to the US on legitimte student visas, but did not fulfill the condition of attending universities for the required classes making their continued stay illegal, which would be compounded if they worked.

Many of the students enrolled in the university were students who had transferred from other universities, according to media reports.

ICE, which carried out the operation, admitted in a press release that it had set up the private university run by undercover agents.

Farmington University had a web site as well as Facebook and Twitter accounts – but did not have a campus or faculty.

ICE said that the alleged recruiters facilitated hundreds of foreigners to illegally remain and work in the US by enrolling in the fake university without the intention of attending classes.

“All participants in the scheme knew that the school had no instructors or actual classes,” ICE said.

Sting operations are used quite frequently by US law enforcement officials, who sometimes create fake institutions to create a sense of credibility.

University of Farmington is the second fake institution of higher learning created by law enforcement to catch student immigration scams.

Although the latest arrests came during a period of heightened immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump, Farmington University was set up in 2015 by Democratic President Barack Obama’s administration.

Obama administration officials had also set up the other fake institution, the University of North Jersey, and ensnared over 1,000 students, most of them from India and China, in 2016.

Twenty-one people who acted as student visa brokers were arrested in that sting.

The Detroit News reported that Michigan state allowed Farmington University in 2015 to conduct business after confirming it had “demonstrated plans to provide housing space, administration facilities, labs, a library and other teaching facilities”.

But the News said it had none of the facilities and operated out of a single office suite in the basement of an office building.

Its president was a fictional character named Dr. Ali Milani, the News reported.

Naidu wears black shirt to protest against Centre

Share

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday wore a black shirt to protest against the Centre’s “step motherly” treatment to the state and for not fulfilling its promises including granting special category status.

Naidu, also the President of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP), reached the Assembly wearing the black shirt and white pants.

His cabinet colleagues including his son and Information Minister Nara Lokesh and all other party legislators also wore black.

The Chief Minisger wore black to the Assembly as a sign of protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “step-motherly treatment meted out to Andhra Pradesh and for breaking all promises made including #SpecialStatus”, tweeted Lokesh.

According to TDP sources, this was the first time Naidu wore a black shirt. He is usually seen wearing white, cream or yellow coloured clothes. Even when he was in the opposition, he confined to wearing a black badge in protest.

The TDP leaders also expressed solidarity with a day-long shutdown called in the state by Pratyeka Hoda Sadhana Samithi (PHSS), which is fighting for the special status to the state.

Earlier, during a teleconference with TDP leaders, Naidu said that demonstrations would be held in the state till February 10. The next day he will head to New Delhi where he would lead a protest.

The protests in the national capital would continue till February 14.

‘Manikarnika’ Producer Slams Director Krish

Kangana Ranaut starrer period drama ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’ has opened to good reviews and has managed to impress the audience with Kangana’s portrayal of the warrior queen.

However, the controversies surrounding the film ever since the project went on the floors doesn’t seem to die out.

Co-directed by Kangana and Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi (Krish), the film hit the theaters on January 25. Krish had expressed displeasure at Kangana’s name appearing ahead of his in the film’s credits.

The director had also accused the actress of blatantly reducing the length of her co-stars’ parts. He revealed that Kangana wanted everything to herself and took over the reins.

Krish also challenged Kangana’s sister Rangoli’s claim that 70% of the film is Kangana’s hard work.

Speaking on the controversies surrounding the film, producer Kamal Jain slammed Krish and said it is very sad how Krish is trying to claim credit for what he doesn’t deserve.

Jain said it was his and studio’s collective decision to give credits the way they are.

Kangana stood by the film from beginning to end and whatever she did could have not done without production and creative team’s consent.

Jain also argued that why doesn’t Krish go legal way if he is speaking the truth and prove his claims.

He accuses him of making it a media trial after huge critical claim and box office success of the film.

Union Budget: No income tax up to Rs 5 lakh

Share

Dangling a pre-poll carrot for the middle class, Finance Minister Piyush Goyal says the government proposes to raise the income tax exemption limit to Rs 5 lakh, but left the implementation to the next government in the full-fledged budget.

It has also proposed to raise the standard deduction to Rs 50,000. Among the major sops, Piyush Goyal has announced Rs 6,000 per annum direct cash transfer to farmers owning less than 2 hectares of land.

The move, months before general elections, is likely to benefit 12 crore farmers. Rs 60,000 crore has also been set aside for MGNREGA, the rural employment scheme, with Piyush Goyal adding that the allocation can be increased further.

The Finance Minister says a national cow commission for the welfare of cows would also be set up. The gratuity limit has also been increased to Rs 30 lakh.

Modi Scheme No Match For Rythu Bandhu

Share

As expected, the Narendra Modi government has introduced direct cash transfer scheme for farmers in the name of PM Kisan Yojana, which is a poor imitation of Telangana government’s Rythu Bandhu scheme.

Presenting the interim budget for 2019-2020 in Parliament on Friday, Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced the Prime Minister’s Kisan Samman Nidhi, which envisages payment of Rs 6,000 in three instalments of Rs 2,000 each.

The new scheme is nothing but a replication of the path-breaking ‘Rythu Bandhu’ scheme of the TRS government launched during last Kharif season.

However, the Modi government scheme is absolutely no match for Rythu Bandhu. The NDA scheme will be restricted to small and marginal farmers with land holdings not exceeding five acres.

And each farmer would get a lump sum amount of Rs 6,000, that too, in three instalments in a year.

However, ‘Rythu Bandhu’ scheme envisages payment of Rs 4,000 per acre per season and it is provided across the board to all farmers in the State irrespective of their land holdings.

Additionally, the Chief Minister has announced that the assistance would be increased from Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 per acre per season, working out to Rs 10,000 per year from this fiscal.

The Centre’s farm assistance scheme is expected to cover about 12 crore farmers across the country, while Rythu Bandhu benefitted about 58 lakh farmers in Kharif alone.

While the Centre has allocated Rs 75,000 crore for the scheme, the Telangana government is going to spend Rs 15,000 crore in the state under Rythu Bandhu.

Naidu Tongue-Lashes At BJP Leader!

Share

Telugu Desam Party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu seems to be losing his cool quite often these days.

May be he is feeling tense over surveys done various agencies indicating his party’s defeat in the coming elections.

On Friday, Naidu gave a tongue-lashing at Bharatiya Janata Party legislature party leader P Vishnu Kumar Raju in the assembly calling him as shameless and unfit to be a legislator.

“Don’t you have shame and sense? You are unfit to be an MLA,” he shouted.

Raju was trying to claim that the BJP-led NDA government at the Center had given enough funds to the state. This made Naidu lose his temper.

He fired at the BJP leader saying that even common man was aware how the Center had deceived the state, but being an MLA how Raju was defending his argument.

“The Center has to give sufficient funds to us and it is not someone’s money. Why you are coming with an argument that Center is doing justice to us? Do you have shame in speaking like this? You are unfit to be an MLA,” he charged him for creating disturbance in the house.

The Chief Minister further stated that, “My blood is boiling as the Center has done injustice. What you will do? Do you want to send me to jail? Are you thinking about interests of the state? Just think about how much that Tamil Nadu or Gujarath have got?” he asked.

He said he would not leave the Center until it did justice to the state.

“You have no sense even the women have. They are ready to fight for our rights. People are coming forward to give donations to government to hike pension amount,” he lashed out.
