Telugu Students Held In Fake US University Sting

Share

The department of Homeland Security set up a fake university in Michigan to crack down on illicit operations allowing foreign citizens to stay in the U.S. illegally, according to federal
indictments unsealed Wednesday.

Starting in 2015, the fake university was part of an undercover operation to identify recruiters and others engaging in immigration fraud, the indictments say, according to The Detroit News.

The University of Farmington had no staff, no instructors, no curriculum and no classes but was utilized by undercover Homeland Security agents to identify people involved in immigration fraud, according to federal grand jury indictments unsealed Wednesday.

Eight student recruiters were charged with participating in a conspiracy to help at least 600 foreign citizens stay in the U.S. illegally, according to the indictments, which describe a novel investigation that dates to 2015 but intensified one month into President Donald Trump’s tenure as part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration.

Most of the recruiters and students involved are originally from Telugu States, India, according to prosecutors.

Bharath Kakireddy, 29, of Lake Mary, Florida.
Aswanth Nune, 26, of Atlanta.
Suresh Reddy Kandala, 31, of Culpeper, Virginia.
Phanideep Karnati, 35, of Louisville, Kentucky.
Prem Kumar Rampeesa, 26, of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Santosh Reddy Sama, 28, of Fremont, California.
Avinash Thakkallapally, 28, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Naveen Prathipati, 29, of Dallas.

The eight defendants have all been arrested.

ICE agency raids and detained 600 Indian students

Several hundred Indian students face arrest following the arrest of eight recruiters and some students over an alleged immigration fraud detected by a fake university sting operation set up by government agencies to crack down on visa scams.

The American Telugu Association (ATA) reported that 100 students were arrested in morning raids on Wednesday. The Indian Consulate General in Chicago reported receiving the names of 29 Indians arrested in the case as of Thursday.

The charges against the eight people who allegedly ran the scheme were made public on Wednesday in a federal court in Detroit in Michigan State. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in the court documents that it set up Farmington University with undercover agents as staff in Farmington Hills, Michigan, to target foreign students who were staying in the US without proper authorisation.

ATA said on its website that it contacted several attorneys and confirmed that arrest warrants for 600 students had been issued and 100 students arrested.Indian diplomats in Chicago contacted US government officials to get information about the case, P.K. Mishra, the Head of Chancery at the Consulate General, told IANS on Thursday.

The DHS had so far provided the consulate with the names of 29 arrested persons, he said.Consul-General Neeta Bhushan spoke to an official of the ATA, he added. The ATA has set up an emergency help team to aid those affected.

It is conducting a webinar with immigration lawyers on Thursday evening on the Farmington case and student visas. The ATA urged the “students to be wary of fake agents who promise illegal ways to stay in the US through admissions in unaccredited colleges and universities”.

In Vijayawada, the Andhra Pradesh Non-Resident Telugu (APNRT) Society, the official platform of the state government, said it would extend help to arrested Telugu students through its 150 coordinators in the US. APNRT Society president Ravikumar P. Vemuru, said that the students could contact the coordinators listed on the society website.

The eight student recruiters were charged with participating in a conspiracy to help at least 600 “foreign citizens to illegally remain, re-enter and work in the US and actively recruited them to enrol in a fraudulent school as part of a “pay to stay” scheme, according to the court documents.

Six of them were reported arrested in Detroit and one each in Florida and Virginia. They collectively received $250,000 in cash and kickbacks to find students to attend the university, according to prosecutors, the Detroit News reported.”These suspects aided hundreds of foreign nationals to remain in the United States illegally by helping to portray them as students, which they most certainly were not,” Steve Francis, who heads the ICE investigations office in Detroit, was quoted as saying by the News.

It said that according to a prosecutor, the arrested students face deportation.Under the US judicial system, their cases had been presented before a panel of jurors made up of citizens known as the grand jury that first determines if there is sufficient grounds to bring them to trial. The grand jury had issued an indictment with the charges for a trial, which is to take place later.

Although the arrests and the charges came during a period of heightened immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump, the fake institution called Farmington University was part of an operation called “Paperchase” set up in 2015 by Democratic President Barack Obama’s administration. The so-called university offered student visas without requiring them to attend classes, enabling them to work illegally.

This is at least the second fake university run by government agencies. The Obama administration officials had set up University of North Jersey and ensnared over 1,000 student, most of them from India and China.Twenty-one people who acted as student visa brokers were arrested in the crackdown in 2016.

The US law enforcement frequently uses elaborate sting operations by undercover agents to deter crimes of all types. The ATA said that the news was brought to its attention by the affected students and their friends and that the association’s legal and local teams in various cities swung into action for guidance and help. The association, according to Detroit Free Press, confirmed that about 100 students had been arrested and others were facing arrest warrants. It said it was trying to help the affected students and had met Indian consular officials in the US about the case.

The recruiters were identified as Bharath Kakireddy from Florida, Aswanth Nune from Atlanta, Suresh Reddy Kandala from Virginia, Phanideep Karnati from Kentucky, Prem Kumar Rampeesa from North Carolina, Santosh Reddy Sama from California, Avinash Thakkallapally from Pennsylvania and Naveen Prathipati from Dallas.Rahul Reddy, an immigration attorney in Houston, said in a live-stream on YouTube that students who may have been enrolled at the university were detained in Houston, Atlanta, Charlotte and St. Louis.

Farmington Univerity has a website claiming it goes back to at least the 1950s as well as a Twitter account but not a regular university facility or faculty.

Sex Racket In the USA: Powerful People Silenced It?

Share

A horde of names including that those heroines who have acted in big films actually popped up in the infamous USA Sex Rocket case where a Telugu couple was arrested by Feds in the USA and accused of hosting prostitution and running a sex racket ring involving Telugu cinema actresses.

As per federal charges, Kishan Modugumudi and his wife, Chandra, are said to be bringing actresses from India on the pretext of attending cultural events as performers or guests and luring them into prostitution. And many actresses are said to have got questioned in India and USA, in this connection. And six months after this issue happened, till date there is no news of the progression of this case.

Some reports are doing rounds that few powerful people from the NRI community got involved in the matter and hired some top notch US lawyers to bring this case to closure. To save the high profiled customers related to this racket, actually, bigwigs are said to have moved their pawns very carefully. Also, the whereabouts of the arrested couple are also being kept a secret for the same reason.

As it happens to be the USA, many thought that swift action will be taken, but it looks like the case if pretty much going to wither out.

Sonam Kapoor Trolled For Double Talks On #MeToo

Share

Bollywood set itself into a huge storm of controversies after actress Tanushree Dutta shared her #MeToo story where she accused none other than Nana Patekar of misbehaving with her and trying to touch her inappropriately. At that time, many star heroines, including that of Sonam Kapoor supported her big time.

Cut to the present day topic, actually Sonam’s upcoming release ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ is actually produced by ‘Munnabhai’ and ‘PK’ fame Raj Kumar Hirani, but his name was left out on the posters and everywhere. It is because a lady assistant director of Hirani recently accused that he actually harassed her for six months during the post-production of ‘Sanju’ movie.

When quizzed about Raju Hirani’s episode, Sonam Kapoor not only stated that her latest film’s release is important for her but also added that the accusations against Hirani may not be true as she knows her from a long time. Now, netizens are trolling her for that double standard.

Earlier during Tanushree episode, Sonam stated we should not question the authenticity of the reports but we should trust the girls who are opening up. So what happened to that now? Netizens are posting funny comments like, ‘every girl is telling truth until the accused is not a friend of Sonam Kapoor’ and so on.

Baahubali And Chiranjeevi Missing At India’s Only Museum

Share

Last week the highly prestigious and India’s only Film Museum, the National Museum Of Indian Cinema was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai. Definitely, its a moment of achievement as an entire museum being dedicated to films is a big thing.

But reports are coming that Telugu cinema lovers are a bit disappointed with this museum as there is no proper representation of Tollywood there. At the hall of fame of Superstars especially, they say that the likes of Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan are shown as the superstars of Indian Cinema, but Chiranjeevi went missing from the gallery. While NTR, ANR and Krishna are included, Chiru is that bridge between old and new generations and his presence is needed.

At the same time, though various Telugu film posters including the likes of Mayabazar, Andala Ramudu, Devadasu, Sankarabharanam and Deva Katta’s Prasthanam while talking about Indian cinema history, the lack of RGV’s Shiva and Rajamouli’s Baahubali at the timeline is disappointing. At the same time, though films like Ra.One and Robo are discussed as the ones that changed the Visual Effects scenario in Indian cinema, one wonders how come Magadheera and Baahubali are missing in the list.

Other than these disappointments, the two buildings, a glass complex and a vintage building, that host the museum, have showcases much about evolution, history and greater aspects of cinema. Managed by Films Division, Mumbai, NMIC is open on all days from 10 am to 5 pm, and ticket per head is Rs 50.

What Is Wrong In Calling PM ‘Sir’?

Share

Telugu Desam Party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu is suffering from ‘superiority complex.’He is trying to project himself as a senior most politician in the country and nobody can match his political skills and knowledge.

Ever since he parted ways with the Bharatiya Janata Party in April last, Naidu has been running down Prime Minister Narendra Modi for betraying the people of Andhra Pradesh. He has been saying that Modi had developed a grouse against him personally and therefore, has been meting out a raw deal to the state. What is more, Naidu is claiming that he is senior to Modi in politics and even as the chief minister.

He also does not lose any chance to remind the people that he had been the front runner for the Prime Minister post way back in 1996, but had sacrificed the same for the sake of the people of Andhra Pradesh. So, Naidu wants to create the impression that Modi is nothing before him, but yet, he had given all the respect to Modi because of the latter’s egoistic personality.

“I addressed him as ‘sir’ just to satisfy ego, though he is junior to me in politics, thinking that he would help the state,” he said.

“When I met then US President Bill Clinton, I addressed him as Mr. Clinton, not as ‘sir’. Modi is my junior in politics. But when he came (to power), I addressed him as sir 10 times. I did this for the sake of the state and to satisfy his ego in the hope that he will do justice to the state,” Naidu said.

One wonders what was wrong in calling Modi as Sir. After all, he is the Prime Minister of the country. Calling US president with name is different as even a common man will call the President as Mr President. But in India, it has been the tradition to call the people in highest position as sir.

For that matter, will Naidu tolerate if his party MLAs call him Naidu? Won’t they call him – CM garu or sir?

Dil Raju Reserves Sankranthi 2020 Berth Too!

Dil Raju has a new found formula that is working wonders at the box office. Usually, star studded, hundred crore worth biggies are lined up for release for Sankranthi. But Dil Raju has been releasing medium budgeted family entertainers for Sankranthi against stiff competition and coming out as the winner.

After the grand success of Shatamanam Bhavati and F2 movies, Dil Raju is making sure to release a family entertainer for every Sankranthi. He has already reserved a slot for Sankranthi 2020 too.
He is aware that there would be a couple of big films competing at the box office next year. However, Dil Raju is confident that his family entertainer will have enough space to rock the box office.

Paluke Bangaramayena will be Dil Raju’s Sankranthi 2020 release. He is introducing his co-producer Shirish’s son Ashish Reddy as the hero with this film.

It is directed by a debutant named Satish. Dil Raju is banking on hit formula and best timing to launch the first hero from his family.

Struggling Naga Chaitanya Into Successful Producer’s Camp

Naga Chaitanya made his debut with Josh that was produced by Dil Raju. Despite having own production house, Nagarjuna chose Dil Raju to launch Chay looking at his success rate.

Dil Raju also launched his close aide and his ‘best associate director’ Vasu Varma with Josh. But things didn’t work out as planned and Josh ended up a disaster.

The attempt to recreate Shiva has gone wrong leaving Akkinenis and the fans disappointed.

After ten years, Dil Raju has signed up Naga Chaitanya again. It is a romantic entertainer with a new director at the helm. It will be launched once Chay completes his current commitments.

This is good news for Chay fans as the actor is running through very lean phase with back to back flops.

Yuddham Sharanam and Savyasachi were total washouts and Shailaja Reddy Alludu also failed to click.

Chay needs a better planner like Dil Raju at the moment. Raju officially announced the news about Chay’s film but we will have to wait for few more details for further details.

Nagarjuna’s Only Worry: Akhil’s Career

Share

Nagarjuna is shocked to see the result of ‘Mr Majnu’. He didn’t expect that the film would be rejected by the audiences. He was so confident on this romantic entertainer that he even gave special TV interviews with his son Akhil.

In this interview he said, “I will be leaving for Goa this week and will stay there for two or three months to get relaxed. Hope we will celebrate the success of Mr.Majnu there.”Akhil too replied that it would be liked by all as the film is mix of all elements. Result came as a shock for both of them.

Nagarjuna now wants to do something to his younger son’s career. With three films flopping, Akhil lost the craze. He needs at least an average grosser to boast of. This is is Nagarjuna’s worry.

He will now be cancelling all his holiday plans and start working to set a good line up for his son.

Top Businessman Mediating Btwn Pawan & Chandrababu?

Share

Rumours are rife in political circuits that negotiations are going on between Pawan Kalyan and Chandrababu Naidu over possible pre-poll alliance. Interestingly,a top businessman who is close to both Pawan and Naidu is mediating the talks between the duo.

Initially, Pawan is so reluctant to forge a pre-poll alliance with TDP as he wants to go alone with Communist parties. However, the offer from Chandrababu Naidu is said to be lucrative that forced Pawan to think twice. While Pawan Kalyan’s Janasena is expecting 40 MLA seats and 5 MP seats, it is learnt that TDP is agreeing to give 30 MLA seats and 5 MP seats. Pawan might be publicly denying his alliance talks with TDP, but he is said to be mulling over the TDP’s offer of 30 Assembly seats and 5 Lok Sabha seats.

Inside sources reveal that YS Jagan had turned down similar offer to Pawan. When Kanna Babu from YCP had mediated similar talks, it is learnt that Jagan had agreed for 20 MLA seats and 2 MP seats. Pawan was said to be upset with that offer and decided to contest in all seats with the help of communists.

Now that TDP has come forward to offer what Pawan is expecting and the mediation is being done by a top businessman who is close to both Naidu and Pawan, the whole issue turned interesting. Let’s wait and see, what’s in store.
