Modi fires CBI chief Alok Verma

Share

Making the conflict between government and CBI look even uglier, Narendra Modi government has fired CBI director Alok Verma from his post. The ousting, which Modi is in favour of, was done within 48 hours after the Supreme Court order on January 8th has reinstated Alok Verma as CBI chief. But, the supreme court did not allow him to take up any major policy decisions until the corruption charges against him gets cleared.

The apex court asked a three-member selection committee, which includes PM Narendra Modi, leader of opposition-Mallikarjun Kharge and SC judge A.K Sikri, to consider Verma’s case within a week. While Modi and Sikri voted for his removal, the leader of opposition Kharge has opposed it during the panel meeting on Thursday. As per a national media report, the Modi government has said ‘Verma’s continuance as director would be detrimental to the CBI’s institutional integrity.’

PM Modi immediately named additional director Nageshwar Rao as interim chief of CBI, until the selection for new director gets finished. In the meanwhile, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has transferred Alok Verma as “DG Fire services, Civil Defence and Home Gaurd”. Alok Verma’s sacking has come down just 20 days before he was set to finish his 2-year fixed tenure. He was set to retire on January 31.

The opposition Congress party attacked Modi government and termed the removal of CBI chief ‘unfair’ by adding “This shows that PM Modi is very much scared of the investigation against Alok Verma.”

I’ve Doubts If Balayya Could Pull It Off -Chandrababu

Finally one of those most awaited celebs who is expected to watch #NTR Biopic to share his opinion has watched the film. Yes, it is none other than Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.

Other day after watching the film at a multiplex in Vijayawada, Naidu spoke to media to share his feelings. “NTR himself got into Balayya’s soul and made him do this film I feel. In the beginning, I’ve doubts if Balayya could pull off this biopic feat, but he has amazed me” said Chandrababu, adding that NTR is NTR no matter what and none could imitate him.

“The film will stay forever in history and every scene in the film made me nostalgic about those yesteryears. Director Krish did amazingly well in showcasing 30 years of NTR’s life in 3 hours is a terrific treat”, the AP CM added.

When quizzed about how his role appeared on the screen (played by Rana Daggubati), Naidu added, “You (media) have to tell me that”.

Can Vinaya Vidheya Rama Beat Rangasthalam??

Share

Already Premiere Shows are enroute when it comes to mega powerstar Ram Charan’s latest release Vinaya Vidheya Rama. As the film is hitting cinemas today on the eve of Sankranthi festival, let’s have a look at its target.

Despite the fact that Vinaya Vidheya Rama is an out and out mass commercial movie, the film fetched exorbitant sums from the distributors. Apparently, it was sold for a total of 90+ crores when it comes to theatrical rights across the globe. That sets the bar pretty high for the film to recover, and do you where it is standing?

Needless to say, Ram Charan’s previous movie “Rangasthalam” was also sold for 90+ crores only but that film ended up as a double blockbuster as it collected 123+ crores ‘share’ from the box office. Now, Vinaya Vidheya Rama should also collect in a similar way to end up collecting hefty profits for all the parties involved.

Directed by Boyapati Sreenu, VVR features Ram Charan and Kiara Advani and carrying good hype all over. Let’s see how it fares.

Vinaya Vidheya Rama Movie Review

Share

Plot:
Ram (Charan) is brought up along with his orphan-brothers (Prashanth, Aryan Rajesh and others) by a doctor (Chalapathi Rao). Nothing is important to Ram other than the welfare of his brothers. He will do anything for the sake of guarding them. But a bad guy named Rajabhai Munna (Vivek Oberoi) messes with him and how Ram takes him on is what follows.

Performances:

Ram Charan is in beast mode with tattooed body and bulging biceps in the film. This is the most intense character he has ever done and he does full justice to it. His dances for DSP’s ordinary tunes make them watchable. Kiara Advani is glamarous and is as energetic as Charan in the dance numbers.

Vivek Oberoi looks stylish and gives a subtle performance despite all the loudness around him. Sneha is uncharacteristically loud and so is Prashanth. Aryan Rajesh gets an unimportant role and he couldn’t make an impression. Hema and Prudhvi’s comedy is cringe worthy.

Technicalities:

Boyapati Sreenu is known for making perfect masala potboilers, but his direction goes awry in this one. He is definitely not at his best while penning the script for VVR. He couldn’t write a decent plot around the action scenes. He made sure to have every emotion in the narrative, but none could make an impact due to poor writing and execution.

Devi Sri Prasad’s music is mediocre at best. Not even one song is catchy and the background score leaves a lot to be desired. Cinematography is okay and the dialogue could have been better. Editing is clumsy. Production values are grand. The film is made on a high budget in eye catching locations.

Thumbs Up:

Charan

A few elevation episodes

Thumbs Down:

Weak story

Clumsy screenplay

Over the top action

Senseless scenes

Analysis:

Boyapati Sreenu at the helm can ensure a commercially viable film, but not all the time. Even he could go wrong with his formula and Vinaya Vidheya Rama is a proof for it. Boyapati likes to work on the action episodes before completing the script. This time he had this wild idea of one man taking on an army of bad men. The idea itself is over the top and Boyapati didn’t even try to make it look convincing. In his eyes, a hero must beat any number of men to a pulp. Ram Konidela also does just that!

The story itself is a half baked one without proper character development and strong situations to take it forward. There is a story for the sake of it, which is why Boyapati relies on over the top action to fill the void. As a result, Vinaya Vidheya Rama looks like a nineties action film that defies science and logic in each and every frame. Even the actors gives exaggerated performances in the loud scenes where going over the board is a norm.

The film goes off track in the beginning itself when a five year old boy stabs a heavy looking goon. He sacrifices his education for the sake of his orphan-brothers. One cannot understand the logic of one boy staying away from books for the sake of four others. Such dramatic and silly are the emotions in the film that even family drama doesn’t make it worth watching. Boyapati also includes comedy into the setup, but the humor is horrendous. There isn’t a proper romance track for the lead pair.

There is absolutely zero story in the film, which is full of lead scenes to a song or a fight. Vinaya Vidheya Rama is not a film that actors would be proud being a part of. Even diehard fans would find it difficult to sit through the overdose of masala. Sad to see Ram Charan picking a lacklustre film like this one after rediscovering himself as an actor with Rangasthalam. Not even festive season could save this dud

Verdict:
Ayyo Rama!

Keerthy signs her first Telugu movie post ‘Mahanati’

Share

Actress Keerthy Suresh delivered a life time of performance in ‘Mahanati.’ However she did not sign a single Telugu movie after it’s release. As she had many Tamil films in hand, she gave priority to them.

After wrapping up all her commitments, Keerthy took a break and now she is back to work. On that note, Keerthy has signed her first Telugu movie post ‘Mahanati.’ Interestingly this is a female centric film and will be produced by noted PRO in the industry, Mahesh Koneru under East Coast Productions banner.

Formally launched on Thursday, this untitled film will be directed by Narendra and will be extensively shot in the United States. The shooting would begin from February and the US schedule is planned in April.

Hero Kalyanram has graced the launch event as chief guest. Kalyani Mallik will compose music for this film.

Bigg Boss Discussions Started In Film Nagar

Share

Unlike starting the exercise a couple of months earlier, it looks like the makers of #BIgBoss now want to get a clarity almost 6 months in advance. This is not regarding the host of the show, but regarding the contestants of the show. More than #BigBoss1, the second season is a huge draw and they want the third season to be another smashing hit.

For that reason, #BigBoss makers are now in consultations with somewhat popular heroines now. Though the second season became a huge hit, not even one face is a popular draw before the show began. Other than Geetha Madhuri, all are either forgotten or not so registered faces only. But this time, they want real popular contestants.

According to the grapevine, a Telugu heroine who is struggling to get her feet right is approached for the show. At the same time, another popular Mumbai based girl who could speak superb Telugu is also in the queue. We have to see what sort of contestants will come up this time.

Krish Proved It, Now It Is Her Turn!

Grabbing the directing duties from anyone is an easier task for someone in a bit of power, but proving that they are the real worth grabbers is something that vests in own hands. And director Krish did that amazingly.

Looking at the grandeur, the biopic movie of legendary NTR should be made, director Teja has walked out of the film. And then, when Balakrishna almost readied himself to direct the movie, director Krish grabbed the mantle from him and today delivered a stunner.

Now in this meantime, when Krish is grabbing the chance to direct NTR Biopic, actually star heroine Kangana Ranaut bagged the direction chance from him. Yes, as he asked for a waiting time to restart the shooting of “Manikarnika”, Kangana has decided to direct the rest of the film. So how did she finish her job?

That will be known only when Manikarnika hits the screens in the coming weeks.

‘NTR Kathanayakudu’: Biopic is a letdown

Share

If anyone can do justice to the sprawling splendour of Telugu actor-politician N. T. Rama Rao’s amazing lifescape, it is his son Balakrishna. To be sure, Balakrishna sinks his teeth into his father’s role, opting to touch the core of humanism in the artiste rather than skimming the surface of his iconic image.

There is a wonderfully staged sequence in this eagerly-awaited, but alas, ultimately disappointing biopic where NTR, all decked up as Lord Krishna, strides across the studio premise in all his Godly glory for the first time. The sheer impact of his supernatural walk from earthly star to demi-divinity, accompanied by M.M. Kreem’s nostalgia-dipped music, is magical.

There aren’t too many such magical moments to hold on to in this three-hour marathon on the mythic maestro who changed the course of Telugu cinema and politics. This film, sadly, won’t change anything. It is doubtful without the overpowering panegyric that the film will introduce the Legend to a new generation of moviegoers. But the cascade of gush cannot connect with the young. The youth today favour flaws. This film shuns it like a disease.

N.T. Rama Rao’s greatness should and could have emerged organically from the plot. When his screen avatar is shown shooting through a comic sequence after the death of a close family member, we feel his greatness without having it spoonfed to us. And Lord Krishna knows, Balakrisha exudes that sense of greatness whenever the script allows him to look into his father’s life objectively.

But that rarely happens as in scene after scene, characters are shown pointing to the Great Man and then heavenwards to let us know that we are indeed in the presence of unhampered greatness.

Where “Mahaniti”, the Savithri biopic scored, was in bringing out the human side of the legend, flaws and all. “NTR Kathanayakudu” wants us to believe NTR was flawless. That may or may not be true. It depends on which side of the papier-mache halo you are standing on. The film can lay no claim to being without flaws. It heaves and groans with adulation and eventually gets entertaining for the vast cast of unlikely actors playing well-known filmmakers.

Why on earth is the Bengali actor Jisshu Sengupta cast as the celebrated producer L.V. Prasad? Even more ludicrous is director Krish as filmmaker K.V. Reddy. Every time he talks about NTR, he gets a glazed faraway look in his eyes.

NTR’s well-known gallery of gorgeous heroines gets to be a part of this exercise in image-boosting. While Nithya Menen is convincing as Savithri, the other actresses, including Rakul Preet Singh as Sridevi and Hansika Motwane as Jaya Prada, are woefully inadequate.

But the funniest encounter of the God kind is with Mrs Indira Gandhi. When NTR receives his Padma Shri, Indira Gandhi, played by Supriya Vinod (who also played a similar role in Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Indu Sarkar”) calls the actor ‘Madrasi’. NTR flares up about Telugu identity, blah blah.

A good cue for audiences’ applause. But a scene done in extreme bad taste. Eulogise your hero, by all means. But not at the cost of facts and certainly not at the cost of an iconic politician.

Balakrishna strides across the imminently ruinous mediocrity creating a figure not as formidable as his father, but still convincing. Vidya Balan as his wife looks radiant and her body language of a traditional Telugu housewife is bang on. At a death, she wails with professional ferocity. But she doesn’t have much to do except look worried when her unpredictable husband makes suicidal career moves and look happy when he triumphs.

I guess we are supposed to react the same way. And the truth can rest in peace.

For KCR, Muslims are EBCs, not Hindu upper castes!

Share

TRS president and Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao is planning to convert PM Narendra Modi’s 10 per cent reservations for Economically Backward Classes (EBCs) into Muslim quota (BC-E) in Telangana.

KCR is learnt to be seriously thinking of converting BC-E into EBC in Telangana.

At present, TRS government is providing 4 per cent reservations for Muslims under BC-E quota. This BC-E quota was brought by late YSR government in Undivided AP.

KCR passed an Act in Assembly in April 2017 increasing Muslim reservations under BC-E quota from 4 per cent to 12 per cent and referred the Act to Centre for approval.

But Modi government did not grant approval and kept in pending for the last two years saying that overall reservations for all categories cannot exceed 50 per cent and if it is approved, the total reservations of Telangana will increase to 62 per cent, which is against Supreme Court direction of reservations should not exceed 50 per cent.

However, Modi government passed an Act in Parliament on Thursday giving 10 per cent reservations to EBCs and increasing overall reservations from 50 per cent to 60 per cent.

Modi government made it clear that this 10 percent EBC quota can be given to anyone irrespective of whether he/ she is Hindu/ Muslim/ Christian or from any upper castes in Hindu.

Now, KCR wants to utilise this opportunity to convert 10 per cent EBC quota into BC-E quota and fulfill his promise of increasing reservations to Muslims.

He plans to amend TS Reservation Act to this effect in the ensuing Budget Session of Assembly.
