Trade Talk: New Releases Tank, Advantage Taxiwaala

Share

Taxiwaala will have another strong weekend at the box office with new releases failing to go off the mark.24 Kisses despite its titillating content and steamy promos couldn’t get a decent start at the ticket windows. The film has been receiving dismal reports from all corners and is likely to end up as a big failure.

Other films like Rangu, Law and Sharabha also have no takers as none of these films have enough attractions to pull audience to the theaters.Taxiwaala that opened on a solid note last weekend will continue to dominate the box office till 2.0 arrives. The makers have made handsome profits on this low budget thriller.

Amar Akbar Anthony ended up as one of the biggest flops of the year. It has become bigger flop than Raviteja’s last two disasters Nela Ticket and Touch Chesi Chudu.Shankar-Rajinikanth’s mega budget sci-fi adventure will take over the box office from Thursday.

Budget Cut For Raviteja Post Triple Disasters!

Mass Maharaja Raviteja’s market value is shrinking with each film.Amar Akbar Anthony’s disastrous performance at the box office has sent shockwaves across the industry and producers that are doing movies with the actor.

Raviteja is not a Rs. 25 crore star anymore. Although Raja The Great performed well at the box office, his flop films are leaving producers and buyers in a financial mess.Raviteja’s hit films may collect more than Rs. 20 crore, but what if the film flops?

There is clear evidence for it in the form of hat-trick disasters that Mass Maharaja delivered this year. Therefore, producers are not willing to spend more than his current market rate.In fact, Amar Akbar Anthony was made within a decent budget, but it turned out to be a monstrous flop that nobody could recover their investment.

The triple disasters effect has reportedly resulted in a budget cut for Raviteja’s upcoming science fiction thriller with director VI Anand. The Ekkadiki Pothavu Chinnavada director has to reassess the cost of production and submit a new report to the producer to take it forward. There will be a huge cut in Raviteja’s paycheck too.

Bored of the obvious climax? BO welcomes open-ended films

Share

New Delhi: Hero meets heroine, hero saves heroine from villain, hero wins the game. Remember this phase of Bollywood? When the climax in films was all about good winning over evil? But with new age cinema making waves at the box office, the endings have moved away from cliched expectations to “intricate and complex” ones.

Recent box office successes like “Stree” and “Andhadhun” prove that movie-goers no longer need a perfect ending to make a film a hit or a flop. After all, both the films had a climax that made audiences think, and perhaps hint at a sequel in the pipeline.

Spooky comedy “Stree” — which starred Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor and earned over Rs 100 crore at the box office — had started some humorous conversations on social media for its confusing climax which showed how the actor defeats the witch and cuts her hair off, depriving her of her powers.

However, during a bus ride, Shraddha pulls out her pigtail (chopped-off hair), attaches it back on — as the closing credits start rolling.

Talking about the how such films with an “open ending” are being appreciated in Bollywood, Rajkummar told IANS: “I think it’s a great way to keep audiences engaged. The biggest example is ‘Baahubali’. The question doing the rounds on social media was ‘Kattappa ne Baahubali ko kyu mara?’. I think it’s a great way to keep the audience hooked and that’s what you want.

“With ‘Stree’ also, people were so curious about the end. It’s a way we know that people will wait for the sequel to come out.”

“Stree” producer Dinesh Vijan has already confirmed to the media that the Amar Kaushik directorial will have a sequel.

Ayushmann Khurrana’s “Andhadhun” opened to positive reviews despite not being a mainstream Bollywood film. The thriller, also starring Radhika Apte and Tabu and directed by Sriram Raghavan, made things intriguing with its climax, which showed an apparently blind Akash knocking a can out of his way with his cane.

For Radhika, who played the love interest of Ayushmann in the movie, “every film, performance or every piece of art is meant for you to have your interpretation”.

Actress Kalki Kocehlin, who played a key role in the 2015 film “Waiting” — a film which also ended with her on-screen character and actor Naseeruddin Shah’s character ending up waiting, leaving much to the imagination of viewer — said such storylines are a choice that a writer makes.

“Open-ended stories are one form. It’s a choice that a writer makes. It is valid. It allows for imagination just like audiobooks — voice influences the way you listen to it, but it opens up a lot of imagination compared to the visual,” Kalki told IANS during the launch of Audible.in in India where she narrated the audio adaptation of Hussain Zaidi’s novel, “Mafia Queens of Mumbai”.

In the past, films like “The Lunchbox”, “Piku” and “Badlapur” too had stories that made you think.

Why are such films are doing well at the box office?

Film trade analyst Girish Johar told IANS: “With the advent of multiplexes and social media, consumers nowadays are a little more proactive and more involved in discussions at various levels. That makes their mindset open.”

He said there are three reasons filmmakers have open endings.

“First, they want the audiences to be a little more engaged and involved in the product. Secondly, the makers want them to take home whatever they want to, since it’s an open end; and, lastly, if the film does well at the box office, it also gives makers a chance to launch a franchise or sequel or take the story forward.

“It’s a win-win kind of thing and a creative call. It’s a deliberate decision of certain smart and intelligent filmmakers and it has done well.”

Trade analyst Komal Nahta agrees that the acceptance of such films has increased over the years.

“That’s because the audience has evolved. There is a section of the audience — known in the film industry as ‘class audience’ — which doesn’t want the ending to be spelt out as they prefer to form their own judgment. But then, there’s also a large chunk of audience which still wants everything explained in great detail. Open endings are not for them,” Nahta told IANS.

For the traditionalists, films like “Dangal”, “Dabangg” and ‘Tiger Zinda Hai” are working well.

“Heroism does win in the end and the audience wants that. You can’t break away from that DNA, but it depends from film to film. If you see last 10 or 20 years, ‘desi’ stories have connected well,” Johar said.

Maharshi Going Over Budget?

Share

The much-awaited Mahesh Babu starrer Maharshi in the direction of Vamsi Paidipalli is scheduled for a summer release.Three big producers have joined hands for this project. But the worrying actor is the film seems to be going well over the planned budget because of lavish overseas schedules and huge number of working days.

Even with a single producer, keeping a check over finances is difficult and in most cases, the producer is nothing but a glorified cashier. This film has three producers and who will call the shots? Who can exercise absolute authority?Besides, Vamsi Paidipalli has a reputation for throwing caution to the winds if unchecked.

Producer PVP said that Oopiri had a great run at the box-office but didn’t break even as the film went way beyond budget. It was a classic case of ‘Operation success but patient dead’.Maharshi would do well to avoid going down that route.

Pawan All Set To Enter ‘Red’ Zone

Looks like Jana Sena Chief Pawan Kalyan will bring more trouble for the AP Government with his tour in the Agency areas. Pawan will be starting his bus tour from Rajahmundry to Rampachodavaram in Palle Velugu Bus.

While it is a novel way to reach people, sources in AP Government say that the agency region is witnessing an active Maoist activity. Therefore, the police need to be extra careful to ensure that Pawan is safe. Inside sources say that Pawan, who has been accusing the government continuously, will in fact bring more trouble.

As a fledgling political party, Pawan and his advisors should be aware of the law & order situation as well as the sensitivities in touring these regions. Apparently, the police department and intelligence wing are coordinating to ensure that Pawan is safe in Maoist-prone region.

Let us hope that Pawan notices the government’s efforts in protecting him in his bus tour and responds sensibly.

AP New Assembly To Be Taller Than Statue Of Unity

Share

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Statue of Unity in the honour of late freedom fighter and former Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. At 182 metres, the Statue of Unity stands as the world’s tallest statue.

Now, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu announced that the new Assembly in the state capital Amaravati will be taller than the Statue of Unity. The proposed new Assembly will be 68 metres taller than the Statue of Unity.

The design for the new Assembly is almost finalised by the CM. London-based world famous architect Norman Fosters, who had also designed several key administrative buildings in Amaravati, will soon submit the Assembly design’s blueprint to the state government.

The government would issue tender notifications by November end and the entire process will be completed in two years. The new Assembly will be constructed with 3 floors and a tower spiralling 250 metres into the sky. For the Assembly, Chandrababu has approved a design similar to that of an inverted lily flower.

The Assembly building will also have 2 galleries of 80 metres and 250 metres respectively. While the first gallery will accommodate 300 people, the sessions gallery can host 20 people. Both the galleries will offer splendid panoramic views of Amaravati city. The second gallery will be entirely made of glass and will have elevators. The building will be cyclone and earthquake proof.

Upset with Suhasini, TDP leader joins TRS

Share

Choosing Nandamuri Suhasini for the Kukatpally seat from Mahakutami has upset quite a number of Telangana TDP leaders whose internal bickering is costing the party. The latest wicket that went down in the Yellow Party is that of Madhavaram Ranga Rao who met TRS leader KT Rama Rao and joined the Pink Party.

Ranga Rao worked on the constituency finalising committee of the TDP for Kukatpally and Serilingampally constituencies. After Suhasini was chosen as the Kukatpally candidate, Ranga Rao apparently was kept away from campaigning activities and was not giving accurate information. This has upset Ranga Rao who decided to quit the party.

When he was with the TDP, Ranga Rao worked as the Corporator from Vivekanandanagar Colony Division. He also influenced the party in choosing his wife as the Corporator from the same division in the previous GHMC elections. During his meeting with TRS, other Kukatpally TRS candidates such as A. Gandhi, Madhavaram Krishna Rao and local corporate were present.

‘Beat me with this slipper if I doesn’t perform’

Share

Telangana election campaigning is giving people many instances to laugh at. One such election gimmick by an independent candidate happened in Jagitial. Akula Hanumantha Rao, during his campaigning, distributed slippers to people and ask them to slipper him if he does not fulfil the promises he made.

Hanumantha Rao is contesting from Korutla constituency of Jagitial district. Along with slippers, he handed over pamphlets during his door-to-door campaign and offered his resignation letter in advance. He said that this “future resignation letter” is for the time if he doesn’t work well.

Meanwhile, the pictures of Hanumantha Rao distributing slippers to people are going viral on social media. It has in fact become a topic of serious discussion by netizens. While it is really a funny gimmick, on the flipside, it also shows that he is serious about his candidature for the constituency. Let us wait and watch if he can prove his words through his actions.Â

When it comes to investing big on films, it has been years since Suresh Babu Daggubati produced a big budgeted film on Ramanaidu Studios banner. Somehow he is not spilling money from his pockets to cook films, but depending on partners.

Even if they are small budgeted films, these days Suresh is buying movies after someone makes them and shows him a preview. Pelli Choopulu and C/o Kancharapalem have come into his kitty in the same way. But recently he announced that there are almost nine films of him coming in the next two years. So what’s the funda?

According to the grapevine, Suresh will be picking only the right story and makes the team work on all other things needed to execute the project. The raids on Telugu Desam leaders haven’t stopped yet. Rajya Sabha MP Sujana Chowdhary is the latest in the list and Enforcement Directorate (ED) has reached Sujana’s residence in Hyderabad and started searching.

But as per sources, the raids are being held for the past couple of days and media was informed quite late. A special team from Chennai took part in the raids which lasted up to 12 hours on Friday and on Saturday morning they resumed as usual. In the raids ED reportedly seized vital documents related to Sujana’s properties and companies. However there is no official word from ED.

It is unknown that AP CM Chandrababu Naidu has restricted CBI, IT and other entities entry in the state and so ED has focused on all the TDP leaders who have business spaces in Hyderabad which is the joint capital of the Telugu states.

Sujatha’s ‘Sexual Allegations’ Haunting Nama!

Share

With elections are only two weeks away from now, tempers are raising in Telangana. While TRS is doing its best to put their rivals in spot, TDP and Congress is putting up a brave face and making it tough for TRS. Amidst this, TDP’s Nama Nageswara Rao is playing crucial role in Khammam district, the district which has strong base for TDP.

While TRS had won only one seat (Jalagam Venkat Rao) out of total 10 seats in Khammam. Though six other MLAs have later jumped to TRS and thus increased its strength to 7, TRS still has jitters over Khammam.

In this backdrop, TDP’s strong leader from Khammam and former MP Nama Nageswara Rao is in news for wrong reasons. A Hyderabad women has complained to Returning Officer of Khammam about Nama. In her written complaint, she alleged that Nama is harassing her and also alleged that he has “hidden” her police case (she had lodged in Jubilee Hills police station against Nama) in his nomination filing. She demanded the election officer to disqualify Nama’s nomination and asked him to debar Nama from contesting polls in Khammam Assembly. She alleged that Nama is mentally harassing her and is spreading rumours against her.

As the issue took place at Khammam Tahsildar office that is just a few kilometres away from Nama’s infrastructure company Madhucon Projects and in his hometurf Khammam, it has caught all the attention.

This is not first time, the woman has made an issue against Nama. The same woman, Sunkara Sujatha, had earlier alleged Nama of harassing her for “sexual favour”. She also alleged that Nama had beaten her at her house and threatened to leak her “nude” pictures.

Although Nama hasn’t responded on this incident that unfolded yesterday in the heart of Khammam, his supporters allege that it is a political sketch by his rivals who can’t defeat him in polls directly.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is known as the King of romance and he doesn’t disappoint being a dwarf. The first song from his upcoming film ‘ZERO’ is yet another example of it. The song ‘Mere Naam Tu’ is a beautiful romantic number that has SRK and Anushka Sharma.

The song has dreamy visuals with SRK’s trademark dance moments while the composition by Ajay-Atul is fantastic and makes it a perfect love melody to keep it on loop. It has vocals of Ajay Jodhapurkar and lyrics by Irshad Kamil.

‘ZERO’ is an experimental film wherein Shah Rukh plays a dwarf. Being directed by Anand L Rai, the trailer of the film was unveiled earlier this month and it received an outstanding response. The film is releasing on December 21st.

KCR Has All The Diseases, Not Modi

During his election campaign earlier today, Telangana CM KCR criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s disease which spread communal madness. The TRS supremo further attacked the BJP Government for blocking the enhanced job quota for Muslims in Telangana.

On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Krishna Saagara Rao has said that it is KCR who has all the diseases and not Modi. It is KCR who is into full-time Muslim appeasement. Krishna has further said that one day KCR does yaagams and on the other day he chants Muslim job quota.

Also, BJP National Spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao has said that KCR has become desperate to appease Muslims and win their votes. GVL has said that KCR is pursuing anti-Hindu politics. The BJP leader equalled KCR’s rule to that of the Nizam rule and criticized his alliance with the AIMIM in the upcoming general elections.

I Won’t Run Away Like Jagan: Pawan

Share

Film star turned politician Pawan Kalyan said that he entered politics not for power but only to defend the self respect of the people of Andhra Pradesh. Addressing a large gathering in Mandapet, East Godavari, Pawan said that he has stepped into politics only to wipe out the dirt.

In a sharp attack on the YSRCP President YS Jagan, Pawan said that Jagan could not save his own party members (deflections to TDP) and that he won’t run away like Jagan. He further said that a strict action will be taken against the corrupt MLAs soon after Janasena comes to power.
