It has been over a month since BRS MLC and Telangana Jagruthi president Kalvakuntla Kavitha virtually raised a banner of revolt against the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leadership. Yet, surprisingly, the party has remained completely silent.

On May 2, Kavitha wrote a strongly worded letter to her father and BRS president K. Chandrashekar Rao, highlighting critical issues within the party—such as the neglect of loyal leaders and cadre, and the party’s increasingly soft stance towards the BJP.

Subsequently, on May 10, she addressed a press conference expressing her disappointment over the party’s silence amid damaging social media rumours, which she claimed were being spread by vested interests—an indirect reference to her brother and party working president K. T. Rama Rao. She warned that she would not hesitate to expose such elements.

While Kavitha flew to the US to attend her son’s graduation ceremony, the BRS leadership leaked her letter to the media, projecting her as a dissenter who had crossed the party line. Upon her return, Kavitha intensified her criticism, calling out certain leaders surrounding her father as “devils” and alleging a conspiracy to merge BRS with the BJP—a move she claimed to have thwarted.

Despite these explosive allegations, the BRS has chosen to completely ignore her. When Kavitha visited her father’s Erravelli farmhouse on June 11, KCR reportedly did not acknowledge her presence. Her brother, KTR, who also returned from the US around the same time, has not responded publicly to her remarks. BRS leaders have kept their distance; none have met her or participated in her recent district-level meetings.

All signs now point to Kavitha gradually severing ties with the BRS. In a significant political move, she recently convened a separate meeting with members of Telangana Jagruthi, her cultural and social organisation. She has also formed independent committees in the Singareni region, where she commands considerable influence.

Kavitha’s announcement of a new Telangana Jagruthi executive committee and the appointment of regional coordinators—without involving BRS leadership—has been interpreted by political observers as a clear signal of her changing course. Adding to the symbolism, she has shed the party’s trademark pink scarf and now wears a new scarf representing Telangana Jagruthi.

On Saturday, several student leaders from various organisations joined Telangana Jagruthi, reaffirming her shift toward a new political narrative—“Samajika Telangana” (Social Telangana). Addressing the gathering, Kavitha called upon the student community to once again lead from the front, this time in the fight for social justice.

“Students played a historic role in the Telangana statehood movement. With the same spirit, they must now champion the cause of social equity and justice in Telangana,” she declared.

As Kavitha intensifies her campaign for Social Telangana, it remains to be seen how her departure from the BRS will reshape the political landscape in the state.
